Soca Music

Updated on February 29, 2016

The Music of the Caribbean

Soca is the Caribbean's most popular music - it combines various aspects of the traditional elements of Caribbean music with reggae, soul, bouyon and hip hop and almost every other genre to produce a colorful blend of the calypso art form that has gained momentum over the years - staking its claim as a major contributor to the music industry worldwide.

Carnivals and Festivals across the Caribbean and the world!

The first place I ever played mas was in St Vincent - Vincy Mas culminates with a 2 day Jump up on the first weekend in July.

I have featured two great lenses above about Crop Over in Barbados and Carnival in Trinidad on this page, but there are many other festivals which highlight soca music.

Parang: Christmas Soca Music!

Parang is the name given to the genre that was inspired by the infectious beat which Venezuelans brought to Trinidad. A truly Caribbean Christmas embraces the music of the islands and while Trinidad definitely leads the way - the songs on the Trini Jungle Juice Parang Lists are a part of the Caribbean Christmas tradition.

I was first exposed to this type of music at the carnival tradition in 2000. I've been hooked ever since.

I like it. Soca is great to lift spirit in the early morning. They don't call it the soul of calypso for nothing:)

Thanks for this KandH..I love learning about musical genres from an expert...My knowledge of Soca was confined to wonderful summers of the past dancing behind floats at the Notting Hill carnival, London. I never realised that 'Feelin Hot Hot Hot' was Soca and thinking about it, of course it is! Nice to meet you!

Soca Music is THE sound of the Caribbean. It is to be respected on the same level as reggae, however, unfortunately, Soca does not garner the same GLOBAL attention (YET). For more Caribbean entertainment news, visit http://redcarpetshelley.com/
