Songs I Sing out Loud

Updated on September 20, 2014

my shoulder's are twitching and my toe's a-tapping..... know I'm gonna sing now!!

I'm not sure if it's a blessing or a curse, but I have lyrics on my mind! I know the words of songs I sang in kindergarten. I'm not kidding here. My sister and I could start at the first page of the Readers Digest Song book and sing song after song without missing a beat .... well maybe one or two when I mentally turned a page on a song we didn't sing in the book. You could say that singing was in our blood.

My father was a young man in the age of the wind up gramophone which my parents still have to this day. It would blast out songs such as "I'll Build A Stairway To Paradise" and I remember my father's spontaneous singing in his rich voice as he worked or went about his day. Songs like "You Do Something To Me", "There's a Kind Of Hush" or "If You Were The Only Girl In the World" that serenaded and soared me to a special place.

It's no wonder I love song lyrics and (when I'm inspired by the right music) singing out loud. Their associations in my life have always been positive.

I am not a music expert or a learned critic. This lens isn't about songs to party to. It's simply about the songs that make me sing out loud. They're the songs that move me to joy and sometimes to tears. An eclectic and sometimes obscure mix. Definitely subjective and topical if we were debating that this was a definitive list.

The amusing thing about songs I sing out loud are that often there's only a part of them (like the chorus) that I really know. You probably know the feeling.... you're in the car, at home alone on a saturday, in the shower (or is this an urban legend as it's not my favourite singing place) and you hear 'one of those songs' and you just KNOW you're going to spontaneously, joyously and with great abandon sing along.

I chose 21 songs in honour of the fact that there's lots of songs from my youth here and I'm aware it shows my age!! I found it amusing since many of us (as we get older) proclaim to be 21 again and again. And besides, I had to set a limit somewhere! I like singing to a LOT of songs!! ;-)

Apologies to the youth of today that no doubt have their own song base that they draw upon! I haven't kept with the times as there's still lots of older good stuff I'm enjoying and I'm too shy to sing some of the modern lyrics THAT loudly!!

Some of these songs are done by several artists (I'll let you judge your favourite) and (to be fair) I've only listed an artist once even if they have several awesome songs. I mean, think ABBA here, which song would YOU choose?? I made a choice and your turn is coming!

21. Walk Right In

Dr Hook

Culling to twenty one songs was hard enough, rating them in any order could send me loopy in short order!! I have, however, tried to make some semblance of order ..... and for the beginning of a lens what better song? So walk right in, sit right down, daddy let your mind roll on!!

20. Big Girls Don't Cry

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

This song takes a place mainly because it gives us permission to not only sing out loud but also to i-i-i and do a primitive boy scout echo. It sounds terrible but, man, is it ever fun and addictive!

Big girls don't cry (they don't cry)

Big girls don't cry (who said they don't cry)

My girl said good-bye (my oh my)

My girl didn't cry (I wonder why)

19. You've Lost That Loving Feeling

Righteous Brothers

The song that inspires 'air' microphones (is there such a thing) and much mutual crooning! This song will perhaps go down in history as the famous Top Gun mock serenade.... which has been, no doubt, replicated and mimicked the world over.

Credit is given to the Righteous Brothers but perhaps you prefer the Hall and Oates version or Elvis??

Top Gun Excerpt

This is a classic movie and a classic scene!

18. Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree

Tony Orlando & Dawn

This may seem a surprise addition but this sunny and upbeat song is one of hope and faithfulness.

Based on a true story, this song was a hit in 1973 and sold millions of copies.

He's coming home from jail, she's waiting with 100 yellow ribbons to welcome him home and I'm singing my lungs out.

17. Believe It or Not

Joey Scarbury

I don't really like this song and I haven't seen the movie America's Greatest Hero that it is the theme song for.... but it does make me sing out loud so here it is!

16. Ain't No Mountain High Enough

Diana Ross

Another song that I'm not too crazy about personally although I've noticed it popping up in movies in recent times as the 'great bonding moment' for the characters. Still, can't deny that it's in my brain and there I burst into song again.

Who does this one best?? It's a girl v's the boy thing!! What do you think?? (and no voting for Diana just because she looks so good!! ;-))

16. hallelujah

Leonard Cohen, KD Lang and others

Just to prove that singing out loud isn't all about feeling upbeat and boppy I'm including this gorgeous song that for me is emotive and tragic. It's lyrics have been debated although to me it seems to be a pouring forth of the imperfections of humanity and the hope of the divine.

Many give credit to Leonard Cohen for this song although I first noticed it being sung by KD Lang. Her version remains my favourite.

I love the emotion it sweeps over me as I pour forth the chorus in the car to my audience of .....me! Beautiful!

I decided it's not one to poll but rather to quietly enjoy with my own thoughts.

There's a blaze of light

In every word

It doesn't matter which you heard

The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

15. you're the one that I want

Olivia Newton John and John Travolta

I got chills they're multiplying

And I'm losing control

'Cause the power you're supplying

It's electrifying

Was it the movie or the incredibly catchy tune that made this hit from Grease so memorable!

You're the one that I want

You are the one I want

Ho, ho, ho honey

14. Do That to Me One More Time

Captain and Tennille

Well what can I say? Once is never enough??

13. Sometimes When We Touch

Dan Hill

At the risk of showing my romantic and somewhat mellow side there's a few songs that just have to slot in here.... especially this one that brings tears to my eyes and than I can't sing it without choking up anyway!! *sigh*

Dan Hill gets the honour here due to this being the soundtrack of Tropic Thunder. I also like Rod Stewart's version.

12. If I Can't Have You

Yvonne Elliman

A good one for belting out and saying it all. Pretty much echoes the sentiments in You're The One That I Want.

If I can't have you, I don't want nobody baby

If I can't have you ah ah, I can't have you

I don't want nobody baby, if I can't have you ah ah

My credit goes to Yvonne Elliman despite other artists giving this disco piece an equally catchy rendition. The Bee Gees for one but more on them next!

11. Stayin' Alive

Bee Gees

Disco kind of gets in your blood and they're often songs I spontaneously sing out loud to. The Bee Gees did some great songs. In my humble opinion that is! The best ones for singing out loud to I've put here.

Warning: This may reflect on your age.....

Did you notice who else recorded Stayin' Alive? Who do you prefer?

10. Build Me up Buttercup

Foundations

Officially into the top 10 of songs I like to sing out loud and it's really getting difficult for me. I still need to cull a couple and I've saved my best 'til last, of course. I've (somewhat strangely) become aware that I've probably missed the one song that is your all time favourite too!! Hope you'll let me know what song that is!

Note to self: Maybe I should be doing multiple lenses by genre?!! ;-)

9. 9 to 5

Dolly Parton

Nine and heading for five! That's us.... and what a way to cruise into the top 10!

8. You Raise Me Up

Josh Groban

A combination of soaring melody and emotive lyrics. I'm a goner! No point voting - I like them all!!

7. Ob-la-di Ob-la-da

Beatles

Sometimes it's the whackiest and weirdest lyrics that catch on and become a catchy tune. Kids love them and so do I. Thus of all the Beatles tunes we have sung over the decades I'm voting this one the best.... or maybe Yellow Submarine.... or Love Me Do..... or....

6. You Make Me Feel like Dancing

Leo Sayer

A feel good song I often sing to my kids in moments of delight and happiness. It's nice to enjoy each other's company so much that you want to sing about it.

5. Old Time Rock and Roll

Bob Seger

The lyrics say it all.... what could I add??

Just take those old records off the shelf

I'll sit and listen to 'em by myself

Today's music ain 't got the same soul

I like that old time rock 'n' roll

Don't try to take me to a disco

You'll never even get me out on the floor

In ten minutes I'll be late for the door

I like that old time rock'n' roll

That kind of music just soothes the soul...

4. Mamma Mia

ABBA

This is going to need a poll folk! Please vote!!

How many abba songs are still being sung to around the world right now?? Yep, there's even a musical, a movie and an official revival group (at least that's how they bill themselves in this part of the world!!)

I listened to them, I listed them, I polled my family and friends and I decided on Mamma Mia... although there was a close second....and third....

Mamma Mia

What a great blast from the past! If you want to laugh out loud than this is the clip for you!!

My daughter's comment; "I like this song but the dresses look weird". ;-)

3. Top of the World

Carpenters

Another one that just makes me feel good! Should be a national anthem for love!!

2. Simply the Best

Tina Turner

I think Tina Turner is simply the best! For me, Simply The Best could have rated at number 1. I've loved it for about 20 years!

My husband never has been a fan and maybe never will be.... but the kids feel the beat and burst into song! The love will not die!! ;-)

1. We Will Rock You

Queen

Being that I'm not a Queen fan (or a fan of any particular band actually) I feel that I can list this as my number one song fairly honestly. I do like their music, especially Bohemian Rhapsody, which has a wonderfully singable element to it.

We Will Rock You happens to be fairly universally enjoyed (out loud!!) however. My kids even love it and if it plays when we're driving we nearly loose traction from the reaction!! It only takes one of them to slap their thigh twice and give a clap and the contagiousness of this song takes everyone away!

Buddy you're a boy make a big noise

Playin' in the street gonna be a big man some day

You got mud on yo' face

You big disgrace

Kickin' your can all over the place

We will we will rock you

We will we will rock you

Buddy you're a young man hard man

Shoutin' in the street gonna take on the world some day

You got blood on yo' face

You big disgrace

Wavin' your banner all over the place

We will we will rock you

We will we will rock you

Buddy you're an old man poor man

Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make you some peace some day

You got mud on your face

You big disgrace

Somebody better put you back in your place

We will we will rock you

We will we will rock you

It Happens to Other People Too.....

the songs are just (sometimes) different ones!

When I told my husband about this lens and the song in it he thought I should include Fishing In The Dark (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and American Pie (Don McLean).

My sister? I Wear My Sunglasses At Night (Javier Martinez Maya).

Songs I couldn't fit? If You Don't Know Me By Now (Simply Red), Uptown Girl and Piano Man (Billy Joel), Wind Beneath My Wings (Bette Midler).

What would you like to see added to the list? Leave me a comment (and a like if you've enjoyed being here!) and I'll add them in to the list!

Here's What You Suggested.... - (Thanks for joining in the fun!)

I've included the iTunes clip whenever possible. Apologies if the song you chose wasn't available. Also for the fact that I couldn't get the original artists for many of these

I love this page because I sing out loud, too, but I can't carry a tune. My grandson isn't going to appreciate this at all. I now have all these songs in my head and remember them well. I've been singing The Lions Sleep Tonight so he will probably appreciate the change. lol

My favourite sing out song is That's Life by The Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra. Great list you've put together here. I enjoyed your lens. All the best.

Wow - it's a scroll down Memory Lane. You picked so many of the songs I would have picked for my sing out loud list! Hotel California and Rocky Mountain High... two songs I can't hear without singing along :)

I'm a Queen fan and love to holler to Bohemian Rhapsody. I say "holler" because I can't carry a tune to save my life. Loved all your songs and have sung most of them in the shower myself!

Now you've got "Stayin' Alive" stuck in my head! (I'm a closet BeeGees fan, so that's not the only song of theirs I sing out loud ... in the shower, in the car, etc.) When I backpacked for six months straight, I realized how few songs I know ALL the words to, all the way through, without the song actually playing to prompt me. So I ended up singing "You Are My Sunshine" WAY too many times. Anyhoo, I enjoyed your lens and your song choices. "Tie a Yellow Ribbon..." ... yep, I know most of that one, too.

@PTurner56: Got Number 1 right for you!! ;-) I'm mostly a country music fan too and I love them for the sing along lyrics that I can actually remember because of the story they tell. I grew up with Paint Your Wagon also - my favourite is They Call the Wind Mariah. Glad you could stop by!

You hit on two of my favorites: We Will Rock You, and Old Time Rock N Roll. I'm into Country these days, but when I'm at home alone, I love to watch musicals and sign along. My most recent favorite is Chicago, but Footloose, Paint Your Wagon, The Unsinkable Molly Brown...you get the idea. Great Lens!

@anonymous: Thank you for your feedback cffutah! My sister had this problem so I asked four other family/friends to check the lens and it didn't happen for them. I can't make it do it here either so will try to find out more about the 'problem' at squidU. I would certainly like to rectify it if possible!! Thanks for the thumbs up and most of all for sticking around - it must have sounded terrible!!!

really liked your lens, unfortunately when you first click on your lens, there is several songs that play in the background all at once, you may want to fix this. I still stuck around and really enjoyed watching the video on 'top gun', I hadn't seen this clip for awhile so I thoroughly enjoyed it. earned a 'thumbs up' from this guy for your lens.
