Space 1999 Eagle

Updated on October 26, 2013

Space 1999 TV Series

I will always remember the Space 1999 Eagle whilst growing up in the 1970s. I will always remember is the excitement of sitting at home on a Saturday morning in front of the TV to watch Space 1999. I just loved watching it. This was long before the famous "Star Wars" movie was released.

To be honest it was not the fact that the TV series took place on the moon (Moonbase Alpha), which I admit was great. No for me it was the fact that they flew around in such great looking space-ships. For those of you that watch the TV series, you'll obviously know the famous Eagle Transporter.

For those you that sadly have not as yet have heard about Space 1999, you really do not know what you missed out on............

Eagle Transporter

As a child I always dreamt of flying in an eagle transporter

Space 1999 Eagle

The Eagle is powered by 4 fusion rockets and carry's fuel reserves to allow the 'Eagle Transporter' to be used for 48 hours of flight. With artificial gravity force fields also built into the Eagle to enable it to accelerate up to 15% of the speed of light. This gives the transporter a maximum range (with extra fuel reserves) of several light days.

The on-board computer systems can handle guidance, navigation, and interpretation of sensor data. Whilst for comprehensive data analysis, the data is transmitted back to the main computer at "Moonbase Alpha".

Not really designed as an attack craft some of the Eagles where however fitted with a laser as standard equipment, together with the ability to hold 'space-to-space' missiles.

In addition to built-in weapons, the Eagle can also carry various pods which carry small arms; a rack of stun-guns and a single laser for the crew to use.

Whilst no exact number of Space 1999 Eagles is fully known, in the episode: The Last Sunset it is stated that there are 28 Serviceable Eagle Transporters.

Space 1999 Eagle

Moon Base Alpha Transporter

The Space 1999 Eagle transporter was a fictional space-craft used on 'Moonbase Alpha' as the main multi-role vehicle. It's work-load included taking crew to explore alien planets as well as defending the base from numerous attack.

The entire spacecraft is basically built of just 3 sections:

Command ModulePassenger module/service podSuperstructure

Simplicity In Itself

The Command Module

Both the Pilot and Co-pilot sit in the command module to fly the Eagle. The module also has the ability to detach from the remainder of the transporter to allow it to be used as an escape pod if needed or to allow it to be used to go and control another transporter (is so desired).

The Passenger module/service pod

There are actually several different modules that can be used by the 'Eagle to allow it to be used for different tasks. These include: passenger, rescue and freighter pods to name the 3 main types.

The superstructure (exo-skeleton) contains the landing gear, access corridor to the command module and galley in the aft compartment. Together with the fuel tanks and main propulsion system.
