Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky

Updated on June 27, 2016

This very important piece of music is record for audiences to listen to on CBS Records Masterworks series. This is one of the most influential pieces of classical music composed in the 20th century. There was a huge scene at the musical premier in Paris, France in 1913. This music caused a sensation due to it's avante garde nature. This music was not very well known at the time. Stravinsky was virtually unknown as a composer. This was his third ballet which had been performed for an audience. This ballet had some scenes which were very startling. They presented various pagan rituals associated with the beginning of spring. There is one scene where a young woman is a sacrificial victim. She dances herself to death.

The Rite of Spring went on a brief tour after the premier. It wasn't very frequently performed after that. It was a piece of music which was ahead of it's time. It is currently one of those pieces of classical music which is thought to be more accessible to people who are not frequently exposed to complex music. When I worked for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as a telemarketer this piece of music was a frequent choice for the 'Light Classics' subscription series which was aimed at people who wanted lighter pieces of music.

This particular recording features Stravinsky doing the conducting. It was made in New York City in 1960. In the 1960s Stravinsky conducted this piece of music in various artistic centers around the world. His career went through an upsurge at this time. His music was becoming more popular. Most people really enjoy the 'Rite of Spring'. It is a favorite piece of music for many people.
