Is It a Real Word?

"Supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus" is not a real word in the sense of having a definition or meaning or anything like that. But if you mean is it a real word that appears somewhere in English speaking pop culture then yes.

Supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus is the name of a song sung by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in the 1964 Disney movie "Mary Poppins".

Mary Poppins gives instructions on using the word "supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus" in situations when she just can't think of anything else to say. An example would be: "How do you feel?" And the response would be: "I feel supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus!". The song, Supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus was written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman for Disney.

Before Mary Poppins was a movie, it was a series of children's books by P. L. Travers that were first published 1934.

How Do You Spell It?

The most commonly used spelling is: supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus.

The official album jacket spells it: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

I don't think we were meant to be too serious about it.

The Lyrics

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Even though the sound of it

Is something quite atrocious

If you say it loud enough

You'll always sound precocious

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay

Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay

Because I was afraid to speak

When I was just a lad

Me father gave me nose a tweak

And told me I was bad

But then one day I learned a word

That saved me aching nose

The biggest word you've ever heard

And this is how it goes:

Oh, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Even though the sound of it

Is something quite atrocious

If you say it loud enough

You'll always sound precocious

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay

Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay

He traveled all around the world

And everywhere he went

He'd use tis word and all would say:

"There goes a clever gent"

When dukes refused to pass the time of day with me

I'd say me special word

And then they'd offer a cup of tea

Oh, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Even though the sound of it

Is something quite atrocious

If you say it loud enough

You'll always sound precocious

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay

Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay

You know, you can say it backwards

Which is dociousaliexpilisticfragicalirupus,

But that's going a bit to far,

Don't you think?

Indubitably

So when the cat has got your tongue

There's no need for dismay

Here, here

Just summon up this word

And then you've got a lot to say

But better use it carefully

Or it may change your life

Um, for example?

Yes?

One night I said it to me girl

And now me girl's my wife

Oh, and a lovely thing she is to

She's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Revisiting Mary Poppins

Here is a great essay that came by my desktop by Drew McWeeny for Film Nerd 2.0 where he explores what Mary Poppins was to him as a child and the experience of watching it with his kids as an adult. It is really good and I highly recommend reading it from start to finish. When I first read the title I thought it was going to be an attack piece on how Disney was too hard on dads but as I kept reading I really enjoyed what he had to say.

Thanks for stopping by. If you made it this far then please sign this guestbook so we know you were here. What other songs do you love from Mary Poppins?
