Best Superhero Movies 2014

Updated on September 19, 2014

New Superhero Movies 2014

One of my favorite movie genre's is that of the Superhero. Whether it's a popular comic that's been adapted for the big screen or a lesser known hero of the galaxy or the people, it's great to kick back and watch as someone takes action and saves the day.

Of course it helps that these goodies are often good looking, have great bodies and are almost always friendly. And who wouldn't want to be saved by the likes of the X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spiderman and so on.

Here are the Superhero movies of 2014 that I am most looking forward to. Before we know it these will be flying into a cinema near you.

Upcoming Superhero Movies 2014

Here's the details for the best movies in this genre due in cinema's in 2014.

These have been listed in order of cinema air date to make sure you don't miss any of them!

Hercules: The Legend Begins - January 10th 2014

Superhero? Son of a God? What's the difference? Well many would say that these sons of mythical gods were our first types of heroes.

Anyway, Hercules is the son of Zeus, and as such saves people and fights for what is right. As most heroes are known for doing.

This time around, Hercules is the second son of the King. The woman he loves is due to be married to his elder brother, the future king. Hercules is sent away to fight wars taking him away from his love, and also to make sure this planned marriage happens without his interference.

Hercules refuses to give up on his forbidden love, but in order to win his hearts desire he'll have to go against his family, while embracing the gifts his real father gave him.

I'm looking forward to it as these types of epic films always show a lot of flesh. And Hercules is ahem, built shall we say?

Not sure what I mean? Take a look at the trailer below for some further insight.

When I was a kid, I remember watching Robocop.

In the original movie, back in the 80's, Robocop started off as a normal guy who was a good cop. Then he gets hurt so badly that the only way for him to survive is to be merged with robotics and therefore Robocop is born. However, things don't go according to plan and there are issues between the hardware and human emotions battling to overcome the programming.

You might be asking what's different in this version? Well not much as far as I've been able to see so far. I can say that technology has moved on since the original movie, and as a result Robocop looks even cooler and more modern. Most audiences probably won't be affected by the fact this is a reboot.

I can say that this time around a more popular cast has also been selected, including Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton and Samuel L Jackson.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier - April 4th 2014

Chris Evans returns as Captain America and struggles to figure out his place in a modern America.

The Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson, suggests he tries dating a colleague. However, it would seem that his feelings are perhaps closer to home and continue to develop as the movie progresses.

In the past, criminals were caught after their devilishly evil acts. In the modern era this has changed and with acts of terrorism being investigated before they occur and prevented. Captain America has to adapt to these changes, while facing an old nemesis called the Winter Soldier from Russia.

Keep an eye out for other key figures in the movie including Robert Redford and Samuel L. Jackson.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

May 2nd 2014

All those who weren't so keen on another Spiderman reboot say I!

Well that's how I felt when I heard about the new Amazing Spider-man but I actually enjoyed the movie so I am looking forward to the next chapter now.

Die hard fans will already know what to expect from this series.

What can I really say about this movie that you haven't seen in previous versions of this franchise?

X-Men: Days of Future Past

May 23rd 2014

Now this is probably the Superhero movie of 2014 that I am most looking forward to. I am a huge X-Men fan and have been since I used to watch the cartoons on the TV early on a Saturday morning.

After the last movie, it was clear that Professor Xavier and Magneto were about to follow opposite paths. It was the beginning of them becoming enemies. The camps were clearly divided and certain Mutants had made a stand and decided who's side they were on.

In Days of Future Past, we catch up with these powerful people many years in the future. The key players have realized that the only way to end the war between the Mutants and the Humans is to go back to when it all began and change the actions of the main players.

Wolverine is sent back in time into the mind of his younger self, in order to convince Professor Xavier and Magneto what needs to be done to protect the future. However, you know it's not going to be that simple.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

June 27th 2014

If you are a Shia LaBeouf fan then you'll be disappointed to find out he's not in the upcoming Transformers movie and neither is Megan Fox. They've completely moved onto other projects in real life.

Instead, Age of Extinction will focus on a different part of the world, allowing them to bring in what is essentially a whole new set of characters. You'll recognize some of the new cast including Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammar and Stanley Tucci.

Of course, all your favorite surviving Autobots will be there, but with some really cool upgrades and new vehicle models too to keep them shiny and new. My favorite Transformer, Bumblebee gets an upgrade to a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro! I am super excited to see his new look!

This time around, it looks like the Tranformers, and their human counterparts, will be fighting Dinobots, hence the Age of Extinction in the title of the movie.

So if you'd love to see robots in the form of Dinosaurs, you'll like this new version coming in the Summer.

Guardians of the Galaxy - August 1st 2014

If you are like me and love Superhero movies, but aren't a big comic book reader then you might have no clue just who the Guardians of the Galaxy are. Well don't worry, because I didn't know who they were either until I kept hearing about the movie that was in the works.

I started digging and I thought it sounded like it could be a good movie to add to this list. I can see fans are really looking forward to this movie adaptation. Personally, I think it's all going to come down to how it's portrayed on the screen if it's likely to successful or not. So this could be a total flop, but it's too early to call it and will continue to keep up to date with this movie as more information comes to light and we get to see an actual trailer.

There are some really good actors that have been cast in this movie, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Glenn Close and Benicio del Toro.

As you can see these aren't your typical Superheroes as one looks like a tree, another is a Raccoon and at least one green character in there too! Check out the videos below as they should hopefully help you figure some of it out.

More Superhero Movies of The Year

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

  • The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

Mockingjay Part 1 is one of the most anticipated movies of 2014. Although Katniss isn't a typical superhero, she does have a lot of influence and the ability to change the world, so I have added her to this list of the best superhero movies of 2014.

Well, first of all, that Wikipedia definition is just nonsense. If that were the case, you could be very loose with the term superhero, just as you have been with this article. Now, let me be clear, I am NOT criticizing your article. It's yours. I just don't see a lot of these as superheroes. Like the Hunger Games. I don't think it was ever the author's intention that Katniss be seen as a superhero. By your logic, Robin Hood would be a superhero and Ghostbusters would be superheroes and Doctor Who would be a superhero. It's nonsense to me.

Ok, my definition of superhero would be the classical definition, I suppose. Colorful costumes, supernatural abilities or superhuman skill, secret identities, that sort of thing. A superhero doesn't have to have all of those things, but probably 2 out of 3, I think would make you a superhero. Iron Man doesn't have a secret identity (except for sometimes he does in the comics), but he has the armor which acts as a colorful costume AND it gives him superhuman abilities. Zorro doesn't have any supernatural abilities, but he is extraordinarily skilled with a blade AND he wears a colorful costume and has a secret identity. The Lone Ranger doesn't really wear a colorful costume, but he has a secret identity and has superhuman skill with a six shooter. You get what I'm saying?

Now, I'm sure you could probably take my own definition and use it to justify The Hunger Games as being superhero or whatever. I don't really care. Basically, I know a superhero when I see one, and she ain't one. Not in my opinion. As for RoboCop, I thought I explained that before but maybe not. He fits the definition (secret identity, supernatural ability due to being a cyborg, colorful costume due to being a cyborg) but I don't think RoboCop's creators ever intended him to be seen as a superhero. He is a Sci-Fi policeman, but he definitely does lend himself to the comic book superhero genre. That is why I said he's a grey area. He can be justified as being a superhero, but I don't think he was ever intended to be that.

@William Avitt - Thank you for taking time out of your day to leave messages on this article. However, I am still really confused?? You have told me these aren't superheroes the way you view it. However, you have failed to say what you classify as a superhero then. You even say above that Marvel have made Thor into one, he was originally a Norse God, like Hercules is the son of Zeus. Yet you go on to say Robocop is a grey area but fail to explain why...

If I haven't been clear on what my definition of a superhero is then let me clear it up, but since it's the definition provided by Wikipedia, I suppose I thought it was how everyone defines them...

"In modern popular fiction, a superhero (sometimes rendered super-hero or super hero) is a type of hero character possessing extraordinary talents, supernatural phenomena, or superhuman powers and dedicated to protecting the public."(From Wikipedia).

Therefore Hercules can be classed as a superhero as he has extra strength and protects the people. Katniss is skilled with a bow(talent) and protects her people. Even though I actually added that movie as an extra on the list and even explained why she's not a typical hero...

I absolutely agree superheroes don't have to originate in comics. Hancock, The Greatest American Hero, Meteor Man, none of those originated in comics. Still doesn't make The Hunger Games a superhero movie or Hercules or even Transformers. RoboCop is kind of a grey area. So yeah, back to my original point, pretty loose in what you consider a superhero, yeah?

Look, you could MAKE Hercules a superhero, just as Marvel did with Thor, but he isn't inherently a superhero just because he has great strength or whatever. There is a clear definition of what a superhero actually is and I don't think you understand that definition.

@william avitt - I don't think superheroes are just from comic books. I think it's about what they do with their abilities rather than where they were conceived. I think I even explain that in the article above.

Hercules, Transformers, The Hunger Games, and to a degree even RoboCop, aren't really superheroes nor are they even comic book movies. Although RoboCop is closer to being a superhero than the others, I don't think anyone was thinking superhero when they wrote the original RoboCop. They were just thinking sci-fi policeman. Just my opinion.
