DVD Swapping Websites - Trade, Exchange and Swap DVDs Online

Updated on August 29, 2013

Why DVD Swapping Clubs Are For You

Everyone has DVDs on their shelves they no longer want or need for one reason or another.

Perhaps, you've seen a movie countless times or your kids got older and out grew those Barney DVDs or you bought fitness and workout DVDs you have lost interest in...and so on.

There are lots of reasons why we all have loads of unwanted DVDs gathering dust until the day when...what? We hold a garage sale or ebay them for pennies, give them away, throw them in the garbage and add some more waste to the environment or just leave them there collecting dust for eternity.

Of course, there is a better way...

You could take those old unwanted used DVD movies and swap them with someone else for Blu-Ray movies and DVDs you actually want instead!

You save money because you get new DVDs for nothing more than the price of postage and better still, some sites offer free DVDs just for joining. You also help green your lifestyle by swapping and trading DVDs rather than dumping them in the garbage or buying new ones when the recycling and reuse of existing printed copies is a cheaper option.

Here are some reviews of DVD swap sites so you can find the best movie sharing site for you and find out how DVD swapping sites can help you save money and go a little bit greener in your lifestyle at the same time.

Swap Used DVDs Online At A DVD Movie Swapping Site

What A DVD Swap Site Is and Where To Find One

Bartering, trading, swapping, exchanging...whatever you want to call it, the activity is as old as human history can trace. Online trading sites have taken this principal to a whole new level however, allowing you to swap your unwanted stuff with people all over the country and in the case of some, with people all over the world.

Movie swapping sites facilitate the trading process by avoiding the kind of one-to-one trading you find on forums and message boards by using credits which take the place of direct trading. This makes the whole process easier and opens up the marketplace to a vastly larger group of people.

Possibly the biggest movie swap club in the United States is SwapaDVD, the sister site of the excellent book sharing club Paperbackswap.

At the time of writing SwapaDVD has a large membership of movie lovers sharing over 170,000 DVDs, HD DVD and Blu Ray movies in their database. That's a lot of movies, and you could be trading yours with them a few minutes after joining for free and listing your used DVDs too.

Psst. Want a free DVD?

SwapaDVD encourages new members by giving them one free DVD sharing credit when they join and list their first ten titles on the site. Since each normal DVD will cost you just one credit to order (box sets, TV show series etc. cost more as they are more expensive to buy) that's a free DVD movie you can order from anyone else on the site and have delivered to your doorstep free of charge.

How cool is that!

Once, you have listed your used DVD swaps onto the site, you will start receiving swap requests from other members.

Complete each request by sending that DVD off to the requester in the mail. When they receive it, and verify it is in acceptable condition, you will receive at least 1 swapping credit in return which you can then use to request more DVDs from other members.

Get bored with these and relist them for more credits...are you starting to see how much money you can save here? All you pay to receive a DVD is media mail postage in one direction. That's around $2 at current rates.

SwapaDVD also gives you the option to buy DVD swapping credits through the site rather than swapping movies for them. The price is $4.95 per credit at the time of writing but if you check on the site's user forums (look under DVD bartering) you will often find other people selling their excess credits for around $3.50 or less if you choose to go this route instead.

You can also check the forums for people offering special deals and bargains on the DVD stack. Often, you'll be able to pick up 3, 4 or even more DVDs from one person for the cost of just one credit.

SwapaDVD also offers printable postage directly through their site so you do not have to waste time and gas on a trip to the post office. Just print out the postage at home and leave the package for the mailman to pick up.

I really like how this site works compared to many of the others out there. The user interface is great, the site easy to navigate as a whole and there are some nice user friendly features which make the trading process easier.

For example, you can place reserve orders on DVDs not yet in the system and so long as you have credits available these will be automatically requested and sent to you without you having to keep checking in all the time to see if there is something you want available.

The credit-based system also avoids that awkward social bartering you'll see on other sites, especially forums, which admittedly some prefer but for myself, find just plain off-putting.

Overall, I'm impressed with this site and the money saving opportunities it presents. You can also pat yourself on the back for going green into the process because all this reuse and recycling keeps those DVDs out of a landfill and cuts the number being produced as well.

Blu-Ray Swapping and Sharing Websites

Swap BluRay Movies Online For Free

OK so if you're like me, you've picked up a new Blu-Ray player and are now looking at that great big shelf full of DVDs and are wishing they were the awesome quality of Blu-Ray movies instead. If that's the case, then congrats! because you've found this page and you've got an easy way to convert all those old DVD discs into BluRays by joining any of the above sites! The aforementioned websites are also bluray swapping sites both allowing you to swap your older DVD movies for newer bluray discs instead if you so choose.

Of course Bluray movies are more expensive in general, even when in used condition and this is reflected in the values of those discs at these sites. For example, at Swapdvd a typical BluRay swap will cost you two credits, not one but that does mean you can dump off two old DVDs for one awesome new Bluray movie which gives you new Blue ray library a great head start.

Goozex - Swap DVD, Bluray, HD DVD Movies and More

Swap More Than DVDs Here - Games Too!

Goozex is not a dedicated DVD swapping club, instead, it started out solely as a video game swap site but has recently expanded to allow online sharing of DVDs, BluRay and HD DVD movies too as well as UMD movies for PSP.

It works a little differently to the aforementioned SwapADVD in that here, each item has a set price in "Goozex Points" which is calculated by such things as approximate used retail price, user demand etc.

100 "Goozex points" is worth around $5 in real money. So, a DVD which might cost $10 on the used market, should be valued at around 200 Goozex points here. It doesn't always work out that way, because there are other factors involved in working out the 'cost' such as the aforementioned level of user demand (eg. a rare but popular item may go up in point value) but it's a fair measure.

A nice thing about Goozex is having the ability to swap DVDs for video games or vice versa, allowing you to build up your dvd collection as the expense of some old Playstation games you'll never play again...or dump off some old DVDs and get some great games to play instead.

SwapTree - Swap You Used DVD Movies Online

Free Peer To Peer DVD Trading Club Service

SwapTree is another swapping site which allows you to share DVDs, books and CDs with people across the United States.

Swaptree is free to join and free to use so all you pay to trade your stuff is postage in one direction plus of course, the value of the item you are swapping...which is effectively zero dollars if you aren't going to use it any more!

Swaptree works a little differently from the other sites on this page because here you are swapping directly with other users on the site, not swapping for credits. SwapTree has an interesting way of doing this however, which leads to every item you list having a massive amount of trading options.

Every item you list as having is matched with people who have items you might want. So, for example, you list the movie "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" as a used DVD you want to swap. The system will then hunt around for everyone who wants that movie and display all the other DVD, Books etc. you could get by trading your DVD with others on the site.

It is then up to the both of you to ship your item to each other. Easy - and easier still when you consider you can print postage directly through the site and just leave the package out for your mailman saving you a trip to the post office in the process.

The best thing about SwapTree is how you can trade a book for a CD or a movie for a book or any other combination if you choose. Perhaps you've got tired of your DVD collection taking up space, well that's great because you can swap them all for books or CDs rather than having to do a peer to peer swap for more DVDs.

Another nice thing is you can actually list the condition of the item here and read others descriptions of their item condition. Used DVDs can get a bit scratched and cases dog-eared, which is fine for some but not so for others. By listing the condition, you avoid any confusion and potential problems later. Other swap sites rely upon user integrity and common sense when it comes to listing items which generally works out great but does sometimes meet with unreasonable responses.

SwapTree is a free DVD swap service, you don't pay for anything but the normal postal rates of shipping a swapped DVD, so there are no "per transaction" charges you might find at DVD swapping sites like PeerFlix.

UK DVD Swapping and Sharing Site

British Swappers Check These Out

SwapItShop - This isn't a dedicated DVD swapping site but instead, allows you to swap all kinds of things including movies, books, stationary, clothing, shopping vouchers, gadgets and more. Swapitshop uses credits they call "Swapits" which you can use to bid on more items other people have listed on the site. Swap your own stuff to earn Swapits or look around for other ways in which you can also earn Swapits without trading anything. An interesting concept which might work for you British swapping fans.

When i found out about swap a dvd I thought great I can swap my my movies for different ones, Well Boy I regret it now because they should call this site give your dvds away because that is basically what you are doing.

Swap a DVD gives you credit when you when you send someone your movies which can be used for movies you want.

Now here is the catch the waiting list for movies are huge and when I say huge I mean on average over 10 people waiting and once on the list it doesn't move hardly at all you will spend weeks if not months at one spot or move up just one and there is even times where move you lower on the list which is bull.

I have over 40 titles on my wish list and I am only number 1 on two of them which I have been from the being and the rest I still the same on list as where I started and I have yet received any titles in the two months since I got my credits.

The person I sent my movies to even wrote me and said he had been on the wait list of them forever.

So unless you want some dollar store b movie(which is still hard to get) you should avoid swap a dvd like the plague or you be sorry and stuck with a bunch of useless credits.

Here's something that might be more worthwhile than swapping DVDs. You can use Video Bandit (an app for Android phones) to scan all your used DVDs and find the ones that will make you profit by selling them online.

Like others I was really let down by SwapaDVD. When I first started using it, it seemed like a great site and I had referred Lots of people to their site. Then I noticed quite some time had past (several months), and I hadn't received any notices or transaction for my account. To my surprise when I went to log into my account, I found it locked and the credits I had accumulated not only were gone, but there was a minus 6 in my credit listing!

They never bothered to email me telling me there was any issue with my account, and when I asked them what was going on, they told me my account was flagged for too many "pick-a-flick" credits (their bonus to you for referrals), and I could start using my account again if I send out 6 more dvds. Then right after I received this email I checked my account again and it went from -6 to -8 overnight! AND my 3 bonus credits went down to 1. I asked them about this, and they said 2 of them expired. But it doesn't end there, I just tried to use the 1 remaining bonus, only to keep getting error messages, then it mysteriously disappeared!

The other poster about this site was right, the site is run by uncaring, arrogant pissants who don't bother to take responsibility for their system errors or even bother apologizing for their poor communication. I'm disgusted by their poor attitude and ripping me off with my credits. Needless to say I no longer recommend this site to anyone.

Anyone ever used DVD Puck? www.dvdpuck.com - works like these sites but is perfect for networks or people built around physical locations like coffee cafes, dorms, apartment buildings, etc. It's also 100% free.

I have noticed that you do not have Amazon ad modules in your side bar. Do you know that you can now place 3 individual ads there? Where your lens sidebar tools are there is a widget tool and you can use it to place them.

Stay away from Swap-a-DVD. The site is a rip off. It is run by arrogant, bureaucratic pissants. They don't mind taking your merchandise, but try using the points you get. Next to impossible. Some of the DVDs they list can't be played on some DVD players. Unless YOU know which are which, you will get one that doesn't work -- then it is your problem foisting it off on someone else. The club doesn't explain the difference or take responsibility. They change rules about mailing and receiving credits for mailings, but don't bother to explain the changes, or make certain all the members understand the changes. They disallow some credits, if they don't like the way the transaction occurs. I recently had a DVD with a manufacturer's typo on it. I mailed it to someone who wanted it, but because two numbers in the UPC had been mistyped by the manufacturer, and corrected by me I was not given credit for the DVD collection that cost $40.

Switchplanet may be in it's last days. I've been with them since Peerflix went toes up in 4/08. I've really gotten into it. They are my home page and I have over 1330 trades with 707 received with 100% approval. Trust me, I know whereof I speak. Just recently the site went twitchy. People requested things from me, switchbucs were deducted from their account and the item went out of inventory on my account. However, no request came to me and no outgoing request showed for the requestor. Then to make it really bad the search function no longer would bring up anything but fatal error. What good is a site that can't bring up titles? All emails to Chris either on his profile or thru Support have gone unanswered. I personally will lose quite a bit of money since I carry a balance of about $500 in my switchbucs account. Plus I have stock and such. I have several friends on the site and they are saying this is happening to them too.

stay away from switch planet. my only trade there, never got the credits, no response from their site. have to spend time contacting the fcc, ftc, attorn, state general, bbb and a few other places. to top it off, the guy I traded with is 15 mins away from me and was a tool. deal with other sites but now that I'm looking around, switch planet has a bad reputation for things like my experience and they never respond to emails.

BrassicPark.com is a free-to-use site for swapping DVDs. Actually, you can also swap books, CDs, games and software here too. Titles can be exchanged internationally or locally, either by post or by hand. This site has one eye on saving money and one eye on saving the environment. Worth a look.
