Day of the Interview with Kevin (The Examiner-1)
I hereby accept a challenge by J. Arnett:
This was written in reply to Jennifer's (Availiasvision) offer of a challenge at the following site [below]. There you can also find other Hubbers listed which you can read who have also accepted this challenge.
Greeting my interviewer at the door:
As the camera crew walked up the driveway the reporter turned towards the camera and said, “Here we are at the home of the person which we are interviewing today. In a minute, we will be ringing the doorbell…” Just then the door opened and she said, “Hi. You must the man who I am interviewing today.”
I responded, “Yes, I am Kevin, and your name is?
“Betsy”, she told me. “May we come in Kevin?”
I showed them into my living room. I told Betsy (the interviewer) to have a seat while I entered the kitchen to put the kettle on and I called through to ask her, “Would you prefer coffee or tea?”
“I will have coffee if you do not mind”, she replied.
“It is no problem”, I said, “Excuse me one minute.”
I returned and told her that we can begin the interview while the water is boiling. I had set a timer. For the first question she began with the following:
My favorite questions:
Betsy: “What is your favorite word?”
Kevin: “Etymology. I won a couple of spelling bees when I was in elementary school and from then on, or maybe I began before that, I became interested in the meaning of words and where they came from.
For some time I have had an interest in spelling words, saying words, wondering what words sound like, what words mean, where they came from and how long they have been in the English language. We use words which are from foreign languages. We have some words in our language which we ‘created’ ourselves.”
Betsy: “What is your least favorite word?”
Kevin: “What is my least favorite word, let me think. I never thought much about that but I guess that it would be one somewhere in the categories of killing and violence.”
Betsy: “What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?”
Kevin: “Creatively I would have to say coming up with ideas for my writing.
Emotionally I would have to say my love for nature. Just watching it, studying it, observing it and wondering why more people ignore it and do not care for it.”
Betsy: “What turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally?”
Kevin: “Too much violence in this world. Then again, any amount is too much. I do not know why there are wars and fights.”
Betsy: “What sound or noise do you love?”
Kevin: “The sounds of nature – all animals getting along with each other and sounding happy. A calm stream, birds singing sweetly. I am sure that you get the picture.”
Betsy: “What sound or noise do you hate?”
Kevin: “There are a couple of sounds that I hate – the sounds of nature which sound like they will kill. Such as snakes, bears, etc. Then there is lightning, now I know that lightning does not make a noise it is the thunder which makes the sounds. I am not afraid of thunder but when it comes with lightning then that is a different story. I never heard of cloud-to-ground lightning until I moved to GA and that seems to be the most dangerous - more people are killed with it. We also seem to get it more than plain lightning.”
Cloud-to-ground lightning strikes
Betsy: “What is your favorite curse word?”
Kevin: “None is my favorite. I may have tried them in high school but basically I do not use them because I hate hearing and saying all curse words. Even reading them. Personally I do not know who thought of them or why they came up with them in the first place, they do not do anything, other than speak profanity.”
Betsy: “What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?”
Kevin: “Probably computer programming since I love the computer so much. I am already somewhat familiar with some of the programming language but I would have to take classes in each of the latest of the most recently used language.”
Betsy: “What profession would you not like to do?”
Kevin: "The medical profession. I dislike blood and most of what the doctors and nurses do. I watch the TV show “Emergency!” all of the time but I do not think that I could do the paramedics jobs either.”
Betsy: “If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?”
Kevin: “Hello, and welcome, come on in and sit down for a while.”
One of my favorite shows
Questions of thought:
Betsy: “In the film version of your autobiography, who would you like to play yourself?”
Kevin: “I would have to say Richard Dean Anderson. I began watching MacGyver some time ago. Unfortunately I cannot tell you whether it was the TV series or one of the movies which I watched first. I can tell you that I have been hooked on the TV series for years and I closely watch everything that he does in the show.
For instance, the famous duct tape. It really does come in handy but I do not just mean for simple conditions, I have used it for harder ones too. He also prefers "non-violent conflict resolution whenever possible” and "refuses to carry a gun", which are both things that I feel strongly about."
Betsy: “What quality or talent do you wish that you could cultivate?”
Kevin: “I do not think that I have ever considered that seriously. In High School I probably would have wanted to improve my carpentry since I was considering going into that business. Some time after High School I was really becoming a 'fan' of using my computer, so at that time something in that area would have been my choice.
There have been various other options between then and now. Such as widening my bird watching skills and many others. Now that I have expanded my writing desires I am always trying to improve in so many areas.”
Betsy: “Who is your favorite fictional character ever?”
Betsy: “Yes, what?
Kevin: “No. Not what, Doctor Who. I would like to be able travel in time and space in any direction either forward or backward.
Betsy: “If you could have the career of any author, who would they be?”
Kevin: “I do not have a name since there have been several but I would say one of the authors of Sherlock Holmes novels. I have long been a mystery fan.”
Betsy: “What inspires you?”
Kevin: “I suppose that you mean what inspires me to write. Well that is not too simple to answer because you see I am not sure how young that I was when I began writing only I was not aware that I was writing. It must have been years before I discovered it, because the day that I had realized that I did, I enjoyed it. I also realized that I had been writing – in different ways – for years.”
Betsy: "What do you mean by 'In different ways'?"
Kevin: "I was trying to save money by writing my own greeting cards. I became interested in writing fonts. I tried writing in calligraphy, and a few other ways."
Betsy: “When did you first realize you were a writer?”
Kevin: “I believe that it was in my thirties to early forties, even though I had been writing in various ways since I was in school.”
As it draws to a close:
"Well", said Betsy, "Unless you have anything else to add that seems to be all of the questions for today."
"No. I do not believe there is anything else that I can think of", I replied.
"Then we will be saying good-bye for now", she said. "If you think of anything else important to add, call me."
I opened the front door, said good-bye and wished them all a Merry Christmas.
Tell me whether you feel there is anything missing.
