Day of the Interview with Kevin (The Examiner-1)

I hereby accept a challenge by J. Arnett:

This was written in reply to Jennifer's (Availiasvision) offer of a challenge at the following site [below]. There you can also find other Hubbers listed which you can read who have also accepted this challenge.

http://availiasvision.hubpages.com/hub/Interview-Yourself-A-writers-Challenge

Greeting my interviewer at the door:

As the camera crew walked up the driveway the reporter turned towards the camera and said, “Here we are at the home of the person which we are interviewing today. In a minute, we will be ringing the doorbell…” Just then the door opened and she said, “Hi. You must the man who I am interviewing today.”

I responded, “Yes, I am Kevin, and your name is?

“Betsy”, she told me. “May we come in Kevin?”

I showed them into my living room. I told Betsy (the interviewer) to have a seat while I entered the kitchen to put the kettle on and I called through to ask her, “Would you prefer coffee or tea?”

“I will have coffee if you do not mind”, she replied.

“It is no problem”, I said, “Excuse me one minute.”

I returned and told her that we can begin the interview while the water is boiling. I had set a timer. For the first question she began with the following:

My favorite questions:

Betsy: “What is your favorite word?”

Kevin: “Etymology. I won a couple of spelling bees when I was in elementary school and from then on, or maybe I began before that, I became interested in the meaning of words and where they came from.

For some time I have had an interest in spelling words, saying words, wondering what words sound like, what words mean, where they came from and how long they have been in the English language. We use words which are from foreign languages. We have some words in our language which we ‘created’ ourselves.”

Betsy: “What is your least favorite word?”

Kevin: “What is my least favorite word, let me think. I never thought much about that but I guess that it would be one somewhere in the categories of killing and violence.”

Betsy: “What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?”

Kevin: “Creatively I would have to say coming up with ideas for my writing.

Emotionally I would have to say my love for nature. Just watching it, studying it, observing it and wondering why more people ignore it and do not care for it.”

Betsy: “What turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally?”

Kevin: “Too much violence in this world. Then again, any amount is too much. I do not know why there are wars and fights.”

Betsy: “What sound or noise do you love?”

Kevin: “The sounds of nature – all animals getting along with each other and sounding happy. A calm stream, birds singing sweetly. I am sure that you get the picture.”

Betsy: “What sound or noise do you hate?”

Kevin: “There are a couple of sounds that I hate – the sounds of nature which sound like they will kill. Such as snakes, bears, etc. Then there is lightning, now I know that lightning does not make a noise it is the thunder which makes the sounds. I am not afraid of thunder but when it comes with lightning then that is a different story. I never heard of cloud-to-ground lightning until I moved to GA and that seems to be the most dangerous - more people are killed with it. We also seem to get it more than plain lightning.”

Cloud-to-ground lightning strikes

Betsy: “What is your favorite curse word?”

Kevin: “None is my favorite. I may have tried them in high school but basically I do not use them because I hate hearing and saying all curse words. Even reading them. Personally I do not know who thought of them or why they came up with them in the first place, they do not do anything, other than speak profanity.”

Betsy: “What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?”

Kevin: “Probably computer programming since I love the computer so much. I am already somewhat familiar with some of the programming language but I would have to take classes in each of the latest of the most recently used language.”

Betsy: “What profession would you not like to do?”

Kevin: "The medical profession. I dislike blood and most of what the doctors and nurses do. I watch the TV show “Emergency!” all of the time but I do not think that I could do the paramedics jobs either.”

Betsy: “If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?”

Kevin: “Hello, and welcome, come on in and sit down for a while.”

One of my favorite shows

Questions of thought:

Betsy: “In the film version of your autobiography, who would you like to play yourself?”

Kevin: “I would have to say Richard Dean Anderson. I began watching MacGyver some time ago. Unfortunately I cannot tell you whether it was the TV series or one of the movies which I watched first. I can tell you that I have been hooked on the TV series for years and I closely watch everything that he does in the show.

For instance, the famous duct tape. It really does come in handy but I do not just mean for simple conditions, I have used it for harder ones too. He also prefers "non-violent conflict resolution whenever possible” and "refuses to carry a gun", which are both things that I feel strongly about."

Betsy: “What quality or talent do you wish that you could cultivate?”

Kevin: “I do not think that I have ever considered that seriously. In High School I probably would have wanted to improve my carpentry since I was considering going into that business. Some time after High School I was really becoming a 'fan' of using my computer, so at that time something in that area would have been my choice.

There have been various other options between then and now. Such as widening my bird watching skills and many others. Now that I have expanded my writing desires I am always trying to improve in so many areas.”

Betsy: “Who is your favorite fictional character ever?”

Kevin: “Yes.”

Betsy: “Yes, what?

Kevin: “No. Not what, Doctor Who. I would like to be able travel in time and space in any direction either forward or backward.

Betsy: “If you could have the career of any author, who would they be?”

Kevin: “I do not have a name since there have been several but I would say one of the authors of Sherlock Holmes novels. I have long been a mystery fan.”

Betsy: “What inspires you?”

Kevin: “I suppose that you mean what inspires me to write. Well that is not too simple to answer because you see I am not sure how young that I was when I began writing only I was not aware that I was writing. It must have been years before I discovered it, because the day that I had realized that I did, I enjoyed it. I also realized that I had been writing – in different ways – for years.”

Betsy: "What do you mean by 'In different ways'?"

Kevin: "I was trying to save money by writing my own greeting cards. I became interested in writing fonts. I tried writing in calligraphy, and a few other ways."

Betsy: “When did you first realize you were a writer?”

Kevin: “I believe that it was in my thirties to early forties, even though I had been writing in various ways since I was in school.”

As it draws to a close:

"Well", said Betsy, "Unless you have anything else to add that seems to be all of the questions for today."

"No. I do not believe there is anything else that I can think of", I replied.

"Then we will be saying good-bye for now", she said. "If you think of anything else important to add, call me."

I opened the front door, said good-bye and wished them all a Merry Christmas.

Tell me whether you feel there is anything missing.

I am certainly grateful for your comments Paula, and your votes. I do not remember ever seeing that many votes up! Thank you!

It is easy. She gives the questions to use, you simply picture someone visiting you and asking you the questions. Write down the answers first, then write in the rest.

I try to be as creative as I can be with many things. I became an avid bird watcher, and devoted nature lover, just after HS.

      Have a nice weekend.

Kevin.....Very creative & enjoyable self-interview. I'm actually still trying to convince myself to take this challenge. You and all our other fellow hubbers who have responded have done a fabulous job and make it look easy.

The nicest part is getting a closer look at the special people we interact with daily here at HP. It's a pleasure to know such a devoted lover of nature!.....UP++++

If I am ever in a tricky situation, you are who I would call just so you could go all McGyver. Smiles. Love this piece and how wonderful it is to get to know the Kevin behind the Examiner-1. If I can keep some momentum (Have had to be away for lots of reasons), I would like to take up this challenge as well. Clicking on all buttons and thumbing up to the max.

As you said, 'tis better late than never! I appreciate your comments about my interview.

The only reason that I can think of for missing your interview is that perhaps it was not on the list since I copy/pasted it. It may have been an earlier list before your Hub.

You have a good day too Ghaelach!

It seems I must have been asleep when you published this hub 2 weeks ago, but better late than never.

I thought the questions that Betsy asked you where very good and your answers equally good.

At the end of the interview you give a list of interviews by other hubbers. Must be one of those days, but you seem to have missed my interview. I am not trying to promote my hub, just letting you know that "an interview with me and him" is missing from your list.

Take care Kevin and have a good day.

I am happy that you enjoyed it Sally. :-) I used to take a lot of photos of nature until my last move. All of my camers are still packed away somewhere. I grew up thinking thunder came first. I was surprised to find out that lightning did. I saw many T-storms in NJ, grew up there. After a short time in GA I found out about severe lightning. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to read this.

Thank you Jennifer, I try to be creative when I can. I have never liked profanity it always seemed to turn me off. When I used to watch MacGyver on TV I do not know if I ever missed an episode. I felt almost like a mirror image of him. I am glad that you stopped by and liked it so much.

Kevin, I love what you did with the challenge; so creative. I like your stance on profanity; that is rare for this generation. I have always felt that people, specifically writers, should be more creative when expressing strong emotions. MacGyver is an excellent choice!

Hi Kevin I sincerely enjoyed your interview and see that we are similar I many ways . I also hate violence , swear words and cruelty to nature. I have always felt such an affinity with nature from a very young child and still do to this day.

However unlike you a part of me always wanted to be a part of the medical profession. My aim when young was to be a nurse but life didn't quite go in that direction so maybe it was not too important to me .

Again a great interview ; voted up and across and here's to many more hubs for us both to share on here. A Happy New Year to you my friend.

I am sure Faith, that it was obvious by what I have written, this just confirmed that I am peaceful. I am grateful for you mentioning that I am a kind person.

I grew up in NJ and we had many T-storms, occasionally they were strong but not like here. I never heard of cloud-to-ground lightning until I came to GA - not even for the short time I lived in AZ (they had dust storms, tornadoes, etc.). I hear strong thunder and see close lightning I stay away from windows. Tornado warnings near me and I go to center of stairway.

Your choices were all interesting and let us glimpse a bit more as well. I found your choice of MacGyver very interesting too. Of all the people you could've picked he seems the most surprising because of my generation, everyone knew MacGyver and his talents but not so much anymore. Great interview!

Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting.

Great interview, Kevin. We have quite a lot in common. I love calligraphy too (forgot that when doing my interview!); it's so ornate and I always write my Christmas cards in that style with my broad nib.

Good to find out more about you. This is such a good challenge because it brings us all to life and we feel closer to those we communicate with on this site.

Merry Christmas to you and I hope 2015 treats you well.

I liked your creative format and enjoyed getting to know more about you. I also dislike violence. I don't like seeing it in movies or in sports or anything else.

Very good interview Kevin. I love how you had a reporter interview you. It's also good to get to know more about you and your philospophy to life. I too have dabbled in writing my own greeting cards and calligraphy. Well done. Voted up.

      Hello Kevin,

I love learning just how peaceful of a man you are and it is a wonderful thing! It is apparent just how much you love nature and watching birds which is really a sweet thing and it tells us you are a kind person too.

I know full well about that cloud to ground lightening. I grew up in Georgia and it happens a lot in the state in which I now live too. It is terrifying to me. I know of a woman who was washing dishes in her kitchen sink while looking out of the window, and lighting came right in and struck her!

We do have violent storms here in the Deep South.

I truly loved your interesting interview here, dear Kevin. Thank you for participating in the challenge. Well done!

      Merry Christmas

I enjoyed this very much. It's good to know more about you. Your philosophy about life is very much like mine, any form of violence toward another is most disturbing and I love the animals who come to my home daily for food. Thank you for sharing....
