Taxi: One of the greatest American TV shows
Taxi: The complete TV series now available on DVD
Right - what is in your head right now, this very minute? I would be willing to bet that for many people reading this it's the theme tune to the show.
That mellow Fender Rhodes sound
It's so typical of the 1970s and 80s. As I was starting to write this, I was playing the theme tune on You Tube (see below) and after one bar - one single bar - himself, who had just come into the room, said 'Taxi!' Arguably, this is one of the most famous theme tunes ever.
And so right for the show
The music, as theme tunes should, definitely set the scene for the TV show. Although Taxi is largely a comedy, it has a certain melancholy that is evident in the music. All but one of the taxi drivers are earning their living by driving whilst trying to achieve their dreams of working is what they really want to do.
The characters and plot
The plot, such as it is, is the failures and fortunes of the drivers for a taxi firm, ruled over by the aggressive, but secretly lovable, Danny de Vito. The drivers themselves were a mixed bunch of, well, not misfits exactly but taken from a broad spectrum of society. However, there was an ever-present camaraderie.
Who was your favorite character?
I'm sticking my neck out here and suggesting that the most popular characters were Latka and Jim. (They were my favorites!) Latka - I'm never sure where he was from but I'm supposing Eastern Europe - was the mechanic and spoke in his own curious language. Jim was an old hippie who had obviously enjoyed the sixties so much that he had no recollection of them. (And the part was played by the marvelously manic Christopher Lloyd).
The second time around
I have to admit that when I watched the show when it was first shown on TV I simply took it at face value but it's only when watching it today, you notice how various social issues are dealt with during the episodes.
Enjoy Taxi all over again
The entire theme tune to Taxi performed by jazz legend, Bob James is in the video below
This is probably THE classic American TV series. Like the others mentioned on this page it combined humor with social comment.
