Great movies based on games

Updated on September 17, 2014

Movies with a game as a theme

Movies about games, or movies with games as a theme become more popular. You can make a distinction between movies based upon a famous game and movies where the main character is involved in a game. I will come to that later.

Today computer technology is used in almost every movie and it was only a matter of time that game characters showed up on the white screen. Game Characters like Lara Croft, Prince of Persia or

Sheva from The Resident Evil made there appearance in the theater.

On this page you will find both the movie and the game it was inspired on. Although both are different (a game still is far more interactive than a film) both are closely related.

You find characters playing games in a movie, like Jumanji, and short movies are played in games often as an interlude in between chapters of the game.

Especially RPG (Role Playing Games) make use of actors and are coming close to the quality you find in the cinema.

The list of movies with games as a theme is longer then you think. Therefore I split it up into 3 sections.

Movies about video games - like Halo

Movies about board games - like Jumanji, Monopoly

Movies with a game as a theme - like The Hunger Games

The hunger games complete set - Games that change your life.

Movies about video games

Movies inspired by computer games

One of the first video games I can remember was Pac-Man. You could play it in the bar on those huge machines, next to the pin-ball machine. I can still hear the bleeps and the silly music.

But believe it or not our beloved Pac-Man also became a TV star in the Pac-Man - TV series.. This was in 1982!!! - The pre-internet time...

With the great success of Pac-Man in mind more movies and TV series about games started to follow.

Donkey Kong,The Adventures of Super Mario Bros and Tron also from 1982 was a classic movie-game combination.

The game industry evolved, starting from Pong with only black and white as colors, to Pac-Man with 16 colors it changed into Warcraft and Final Fantasy with millions of colors.

The flat world of the Arcade games evolved into the fantasy games with rotating camera points of few. You could see Lara Croft dangling on a rope from all different angles. Seeing the environment through her own eyes and with a bird perspective.

Movies based upon famous video games are for example :

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn - 2012

Dungeons and Dragons/Dungeons and Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God - 2009

Resident Evil Trilogy 1-3 - 2008

Resident Evil: Retribution - 2012

Mass Effect: Paragon Lost - 2012

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - 2010

Max Payne - 2008

Postal - 2007

Just to name a few !!!!!

What is your favorite movie inpired by games - What are the best movies about games ?

Some games where spin offs of the movie and even the movie was based on a book. Like The Hobbit. I can remember that I was playing The Hobbit on my first computer. A BBC Acorn. The game, the Hobbit was put on a cassette. I had a cassette recorder attached to my computer and with a bit of luck I was able to play The Hobbit as an text adventure...

I'll bet that there will be soon a Bilbo Baggins Game in the stores.

But for now there are quite a lot of films inspired on games.

Have you seen any of them ?

Movies inspired by games - Games within Games

Prince of Persia
Prince of Persia

Homo Ludens - Man the Player.

Since the dawn of mankind, we played. with stones, with water, fire and mind games too. Today we still play with marbles and pieces of wood.

The oldest game (no..not that one...) is Senet. The oldest board game that is. It was played in Egypt around 3100 BC. Around that time it was one of the most popular games in Egypt. And it can be found in many a tomb. (Lara Croft and Indiana Jones must have played it together, I'm sure.) The Senet experts and historians Kendall and Bell constructed some sets of rules to play the game. These rules have been adopted by different companies which make Senet sets for sale today.

But with the invention of the computer it didn't take long to figure out that you could use a computer for games as well.

Starting in the 70's with Pac-Man, Pong, Donkey-Kong and Space Invaders.

Today we are up to a completely different level of computer gaming. With massive RPG (Role Playing Games) like World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria ,The Guild Wars Trilogy and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

To find out where she is and and who she is. That's the setting of her adventure. She will learn, but it won't be easy. How far must she go to survive !!!

This action-adventure game is a winner, if you are a Lara Croft fan, you won't be disappointed. All the action and scenery is there + more...

And now there is a Tomb Raider Bonus

For a limited time purchase Tomb Raider and receive the Final Hours Edition which includes an art book, an extra multi player map and new skin for Lara.

Tomb Raider Survival/Collector's Edition - Playstation 3
Tomb Raider Survival/Collector's Edition - Playstation 3

Lara Croft is back, and with style.

Her journey starts with the beginning. inexperienced, she discovers jungles, caves , colorful sunsets and beatiful mountains...and with the graphics they really are fantastic. But...not everything looks what it seems.

Movies about games - Games that became movies

There are more games that made it into movies then you would think of. The most famous games that became movies are without doubt Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy. But there are more...

Resident Evil is starting to become the next legendary blockbuster series. Like The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones it became a world of it's own with a huge following of fans.

Fanal Fantasy too, has build up an incredible series of films, just like the games.

Wreck it Ralph Arcade games go to the movies - Walt Disney goes arcade.

Wreck-It Ralph is a bad guy in the arcade world, he always has to do the bad things. And he can't take it anymore. He wants to change. Together with his other Arcade friends he has adventures. Fighting other bad guys and being on the good side for a change.

The whole bit shebang of Arcade heroes is present, like mr. Street Fighter, Pac-Man, Q*bert and Super Mario Bros. It is a fun family film with lots of memories for those who played the arcade games in the early days. And for the kids too, who will look at the games they play in a different way, after seeing this hilarious movie.

Playing Risk on a Battleship - A game, reality or a movie ?

Artwork by Sigmar Polke, Soldiers playing the board game Risk on a battleship

War Games and the reality.

The photo above is made by Stephen Crowley for the New York Times, It was used by the German artist SigmarPolke and used for an art work. Sigmar Polke is one of my favorite artists and I think this picture is a brilliant artwork.

What is a game and what is reality. The soldiers are playing a game that has as a goal World Domination. The same "game" president George W. Bush was playing when he sent the battleship into war. A war game with tens of thousands of casualties. The work is a great peace of art because it lets you think about the absurd reality of it all. It is a criticism against the crazy war in Iraq. The soldiers rather want to be home and play games with there families then to fight in a strange country.

Mass Effect: Paragon Lost (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Mass Effect: Paragon Lost is the prequel to the highly-anticipated Mass Effect 3 and follows the early career of Alliance Marine and James Vega.

Battleship a classic game and an awful movie

Battleship may be an old fashioned game, a game that's hidden somewhere in grandma's drawer. But the movie Battleship definitely is not.

This Epic action-adventure begins at sea. An international naval coalition doing it's ordinary exercise bumps into a alien hostile force. It soon becomes clear that the naval unit becomes the last stand for the world. It's a matter of survival, strength, wit and bold heroism may perhaps save the Earth. Ripping across air, earth and water the Alien Force is of an immense strength.

This movie based upon the board game with the same name is full of spectacular visual effects and fast action. But to be honest it is a B movie without any sensible story line. So if you like war movies with special effects that are quiet patriotic, it's great, otherwise go for an old board game like scrabble to enjoy a winternight.

Monopoly The Movie - "The Official Trailer" - A Board Game as a movie ?

Monopoly the calssic board game - an evergreen game.

New movies about a board game. - Board Games that are in the make for a movie.

movies about games
movies about games

With Battleship as a forerunner more board games will be used as a source of inspiration for a film.

One of the board games that will be transformed into a movie is Monopoly, yes you read me right. Monopoly, the good old game that's won the hearts of thousands. Question is, will it be possible to make a movie about it. It all depends on the script writer and the actors I think, But it has potential.

It got everything you want. Jail, Stock market, chasing and dicing. Luck of life and Offers you can't refuse.....

Other movies that are in the make are Risk and Candyland..Risk a game developed by the French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse who made the movie The Red Balloon (a film every child must see. wonderful poetic and emotional touching for child and adult alike.)

Candyland will be directed by Kevin Lima (Enchanted) Although Candyland could turn out in a film like Jumanji where people enteri an enchanted board game, my hunch is that it will be a more conventional family movie.

And last but not least, there will be a movie out about ANGRY BIRDS.... The release date is in the summer of 2016. In the mean time there is probably a different hype all together going on.. But what the hack, those birds never stop being angry.....

What's your favorite game ?

To be honest, mine is probably scrabble, if your talking about board games. Video game wise, I like RPG's like Neverwinter Night and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but I do not have much time to play them.

Do you have a favorite Game ?

Movie Fan or Game Fan, everybody is welcome. - What's your favorite game ?

True Vicky7004 , It's hard to find an interesting movie based on a game. Tomb Raider maybe wasn't bad for the Genre but most are terrible simplistic. Thanks for the Mario Bros tip I had a laugh on Youtube.
