The Best of Sean Connery

Updated on May 13, 2013

The beginning for Sean Connery

Sean Connery began, as most film start do, with humble beginnings. Growing up in Edinburgh in the 1930's, Sean, with no immediate intention of becoming an actor at the time, joined the Royal Navy.

After about three years in the Navy, Sean had scummed to stomach ulcers. It was because of his ulcers that he had to shorten his naval career. He later began bodybuilding among other things. In 1950 Sean place third in a Mr. Universe bodybuilding competition. A task that is very rare to see in an actor these days.

It was not until 1958 that Sean Connery was able to be seen in his first movie staring himself and Luna Turner. It was yet another four years before you would here him say the most famous move line ever.."I am Bond, James Bond." It was this.. this movie alone that launched Sean into an international fenom. To date Sean Connery has been featured in over 65 block-buster films.

How Connery became "Bond,James Bond" - The six that started it all

Ian Flemin, the man behind 'The Man'.

From 1962 to 1971 Ian Fleming created six..count em..six James Bond movies. All of Fleming's, James Bond movies featured the increasingly popular Sean Connery. Sean Connery, as James Bond, became know as the suave and confident Secret Agent 007.

The Best of Bond - Who did it better? Sean Connery or...

Over the years there have been six different people that have played the part of James Bond. The best being Sean Connery of my opinion. Sean Connery was the milestone and benchmark for every James Bond movie after his last James Bond appearance in "Never Say Never Again."

The first person that Connery passed the torch to was George Lazenby. Coincidentally, he was only cast in one James Bond flick, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". The medias reaction was less than desired. Lazenby's inability to live up to the James Bond that everyone knew and love caused him to back out of 7 year James Bond movie contract. It was because of this that the producer Albert R. Broccolli asked Connery to return to the role. Sean Connery was back on top again. He later stared in the Bond movie "Diamonds are Forever."

Sean Connery once again passed the torch down again following his 1971 Bond hit. The next person to take the spot as Secret Agent 007 was none other than Roger Moore. The man who made famous the Walter PPK hand pistol. Robert Moore became the new face of James Bond for over a decade. He starred in seven James Bond classics over twelve years. Roger Moore over stayed his James Bond welcome and was later replaced because of his age.

Timothy Dalton replaced an aging Roger Moore in the release of "The Living Daylights" in 1987. This movies role was intended for Pierce Brosnan but at the time he was busy with other aspects of his career. Dalton brought to the screen a more rough and tough Bond, and the public reaction was filled with mixed emotions. Dalton only completed two James bond film before he retired his role as Bond prior to 1991.

Arguably the best Bond since Connery was none other than Pierce Brosnan. Brosnan played the lead in such Bond films as "Golden Eye"(1995), "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999), and "Die Another Day". He was eventually fired from the role prior to his fifth movie.

Daniel Craig is the most recent and the sixth of the Bonds to awe us on the big screen. Also, Craig is the first blond actor to play Bond. He is also the second Englishman (behind Moore) to star in the role.

Later down the line - Other great movies with Sean Connery

For Sean Connery James Bond was just the tip of the iceberg. He later began to star in other familiar movies as well. After Bond, he would soon broadened his career with an Agatha Christie in the movie 'Murder on the Orient Express'. A gripping murder mystery. He would even do an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's medieval romance, adventure, 'The Man Who Would Be King'. He would surface again in Peter Hyams' 1981 sci-fi film, 'Outland' before returning to do his last James Bond film.

Sean Connery did not stop there, however, He cemented himself in our minds with the epic 1990's 'Hunt For Red October'. One of the better non-Jame Bond films that he did was 1993's 'Rising Sun' where he played as an expert in all things Japanese, an in 1996s' 'Dragonheart' where he played a medieval role.

Other great movies that Sean stared in are, 'The Rock', 'Just Cause', ' Entrapment', 'Finding Forrester', and 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'. All of these movies are over the top amazing and are well played by Sean Connery.

What is your oppinion of Sean Connerys' body of work over the years?

Found this lens because it showed in a POP-UP for Related Pages similar to one my lenses. Bet you can't guess which lens. :) I'm a Sean Connery addict. Had not his ulcers shortened his naval career he may have been a real commander as well as a fictional one.

Sean Connery is one of my favorite actors. The juxtaposition of his part in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with his Bond role was delicious.
