The Gibb Brothers Bee Gees

Updated on January 4, 2015

The Young Bee Gees

Who Were The Bee Gees

The Bee Gees were the most popular British Band of all time barring only Paul McCartney of the Beatles. They have had chart topping singles in every decade since they started in the early 60's. We are now left with the sole survivor of the original band members, strangely it is Barry Gibb who was the eldest.

This lens is going to give you a bit about their amazing story and lifestyle and the sheer character, grit and determination, not to mention talent that took them from the streets of Manchester where they were developing such a reputation that the local Police Chief actually suggested to their parents that they immigrate to Australia before the boys were locked up for good!

Fortunately their parents took his advice otherwise the world may have been deprived of the phenomena that the Bee Gees became.

Since I was not a fan in the early days all photographs are from public domain sources, album covers and I have also used Barry Gibb's own Facebook Page for his fans.

More About The Bee Gees

Barry the eldest and the twins Robin and Maurice Gibb were the Bee Gees, one of the Worlds most successful bands. They hold the record at 6 for the most consecutive number 1 hits on the BillBoard charts, along with the Beatles, only Whitney Houston had more with 7!

They are amongst the top selling bands with over 220 million record sales. You can view their documented history on Wikipedia. I am linking here so that I am not duplicating any content that might lead to my article being counted as spam.

The boys were never very successful in Australia where they had moved to Queensland and started playing in the Wogawoga Policeman's Club. I think that was what Barry once said. They made their break by writing to Brian Epstein who passed their demos to his then new assistant Robert Stigwood who became their manager. Whilst they were on the liner on the voyage to Britain their single Spicks and Specks became their first number 1 hit in Australia. They helped while away time by playing for the other passengers (and presumably helped pay their fare!).

With the passage of time they have become one of the few acts to have over 220 Million record sales and have been recorded by hundreds of other artists including Celine Dion, Olivia Newton John, Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick and Diana Ross. Those are just the most famous ones, over 400 acts have covered their songs.

The title track for Saturday Night Fever was for a long time the best selling movie soundtrack, and may very well one day regain that title as it continues to sell. They may never have received the acclaim of the Beatles and yet we nearly all know the words to a t least one of their songs so they are one of my favourite bands of all time and quite definitely my wife`s favourite!

They have had their ups and downs and the tragic deaths of both the twins first Maurice and now Robin. Fortunately for us their music and videos live on, largely due to Barry`s determination that his brothers should not be forgotten.

I think they were one of the best and under rated due to being around with the Beatles. However their music lives on and a new generation can now get to appreciate them.

I guess the answer is yes as my wife has nearly all of their albums, but I will check it out again just to be sure. Cucumber Castle which was a flop at the time is also on YouTube and well worth a visit for a laugh and to appreciate their music.

They are one of my favorite bands and I think they are extremely talented. They have some great tracks. 'We're The Bunburys,' which happens to be one of my favorite tracks, is surprisingly not well known to many music fans. Heard the song? It's on YouTube.

Voted thumbs up and 'interesting.' Cheers!

I agree with you. This was MY era of music appreciation. I still have most of my vinyl LP's but not a needle for my stereo.

I appreciate your hub about guitars too.

Yes one would have thought so, nor really sure why it did not happen maybe Travolta or some of the others did not want to commit to a sequel? I will have to try to find the answer now you got me curious!

Thank you for the reply to my comment. If a follow-up had been discussed during the first film, couldn't the musical scores had been written before the first film was finished?

I will always wonder if the Saturday Night Fever II would have been as successfu.

The ABC show that starred "Donna" and the show was named "Donna," did not go far. Too predictable and slow on punchlines.

Thank you Kenneth it is always nice to know your work is appreciated. I too would have loved a Night Fever follow up. Before researching I had been sure they wrote specifically for the movie it was a great surprise that in fact the music had already been written and they just adapted the timings to fit the movie!

I will tell you the truth. I think that this is an excellent piece of writing. Amazing work. I always thought that they would do a part two of Saturday Night Fever, but I was sadly-disappointed.

I loved the way you presented your topic. Wonderful graphics.

This piece was helpful, informative and very interesting.I was glad to vote Up and all of the choices.

You are certainly a gifted writer. Please keep up the fine work.

I know that their parents used to think they had the radio on when in fact it was them singing! Maurice and Robin were taken from us far too soon! I hope The angels have space in their choir.

I love, love, love the Bee Gees. It's so sad that we have lost two members . Not at all fair! I read somewhere that when the boys were very young and were taken out in the car, their parents used to be blown away because they used to sing incredible harmonies - just off the cuff! A bit different to most brothers. Great hub. You have cheered me up.

Love the Bee Gees! Had a crush on all of them at one time or another. I was a fan before disco. "Edge of the Universe" is one of my favs, but also "How can you mend a broken heart" . There's not another sound out there even close.

Absolutely although the Bee Gees lasted much longer and have out sold all other bands with the one exception of Mr Paul McCartney!

I love the 60's music of the Beatles and the Bee Gees. This was a great period for music.
