Hallmark's The Odyssey 1997 Movie Review
The Odyssey, A 1997 Hallmark Entertainment Movie Event Featuring Armand Assante
The Odyssey is a 1997 Hallmark Home Entertainment movie version of Homer's Odyssey, a made-for-television movie featuring an all-star cast including the likes of Armand Assante, Greta Scacchi, Isabella Rossellini, Bernadette Peters, Vanessa Williams and Christopher Lee. My knowledge of The Odyssey and Greek mythology is limited and rather dated, so I enjoyed watching a movie version of the story, taking a refresher course of sorts, although I understand that it is not a perfect representation of the epic poem.
On this page, you will find my review as well as reviews by other non-professional reviewers. Believe it or not, I could not find any professional reviews of The Odyssey, possibly because it was a made-for-television movie.
You will also find the official movie trailer and sources for buying The Odyssey on DVD and on VHS. Previously discontinued, the DVD had become very expensive. However, if you have been wanting to watch this movie you will be thrilled to discover that THE ODYSSEY HAS BEEN RE-RELEASED by Hallmark Hall of Fame as a double feature, bundled with Gulliver's Travels and I think you will find the price on Amazon to be more than acceptable.
"An incredible story of worlds beyond belief."

My Review of Armand Assante's The Odyssey in 100 Words or Less
The Odyssey is rated PG-13 and therefore not appropriate for most children.
Amazon says that The Odyssey is a spectacular epic, which is also “a star-studded, special-effects-filled adventure of breathtaking beauty and power." I say that The Odyssey is an enjoyable story following King Odysseus' adventures during the ten years he spent returning from the Trojan War to Ithaca, Greece. I understand that it is not totally true to Homer's Odyssey but that it is close enough to present an entertaining version of the story. It was beautiful, featuring footage from Malta, Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea.
An adventure-filled journey and battle, which definitely included lots of violence not appropriate for young children and is rated PG-13. I felt it was okay for my 16-year old but I would not have been comfortable a couple of years ago because of the violence and the implied sexual scenes. He and I did laugh at the end for, of course, The Odyssey is not only a war story with many battles but it is also a love story.Amazon closes with, “It's the voyage of a lifetime, and a journey you and your family will never forget, in this glorious retelling of one of the greatest adventure tales of all time." However, as a now dated Hallmark Entertainment made-for-television mini-series, I did not expect to see the effects that I would had this been a big screen movie and you should not either. What you will find is an interesting story and, if you are like me, you will find yourself routing for King Odysseus.
Amazon Customer Reviews
Amazon customer reviews of The Odyssey are positive. Frederick Flor says that the movie does a good job of capturing "the essence of Odysseus's adventures and misadventures following the end of the Trojan War." Others call it an excellent movie and say that they really enjoyed it. R.R. Mueller says it is fairly faithful, that the acting and special effects are good. Finally, Cam Williams says that the movie is filled with adventure, romance and humor and that it should please anyone who loves mythology or who wants to understand Homer's text better. You can read more Amazon customer reviews by clicking right here.
This is the most economical way to buy the movie. You receive two movies, The Odyssey and Gulliver's Travels, in one case at a very reasonable price.
Differences Between The Odyssey Movie and Homer's Odyssey
There were many differences between this version of The Odyssey and Homer's original story. They include the facts that encounters with Sirens, Laestrygonians, Lotus Eaters, and cattle of Helios are omitted; the movie is chrnological order whereas Homer's Odyssey begins in the middle; and that Menelaus has black hair but, according to the book, should have red hair. Some differences obviously being minor, others more important. For the full list of differences offered by Wikipedia, follow this link.
