The Starlost 1970s Sci-Fi at its best!
While browsing Amazon to purchase Season One DVDs of Space 1999, the Amazon website recommended I might like The Starlost. I consider myself somewhat of an authority of 1970s science fiction, as this was my favorite genre as a child, but I never heard of The Starlost. On a whim I purchased the complete series after reading the Amazon editorial review.
The Starlost is a Canadian Science Fiction TV series. The premise is that Earth prepares for imminent disaster by building a gigantic multi-generational Starship called Ark, presumably after Noah's Ark, that is 50 miles wide by 200 miles long to take descendants of humankind to a new home to settle. The Ark contains large 50 mile wide biospheres that contain people of different cultures. A disaster struck early in the voyage killing the crew that managed and navigated the Ark. During the disaster an automatic damage control system sealed off each biosphere and kept the inhabitants alive. As centuries past the inhabitants of the biospheres become enclosed societies and forget that they are the inhabitants of a large Starship.
Devon, an outcast of his community from biosphere Cypress Corners, rediscovers that they are on the ship Ark and that it is on a collision course with a star. The TV series revolves around Devon, his love Rachel, and friend Garth as they make their way through the Starship Ark and they learn all they can in order to save the Ark, and all of its inhabitants, from certain death.
I have watched several episodes of The Starlost and feel that the storyline is really strong. I was even amazed at the special effects given the technology available in 1973. The Starlost is pre-Star Wars so it could not take advantage of all of the advantages in cinematography developed by Lucas Films and other studios at the end of the decade. Also, as The Starlost is a TV series and not a movie their budget was even more limited.
I would definitely pick up a DVD copy of The Starlost The Complete Series if you are an aficionado of 1970s Sci-FI.
Space 1999 is one of my favorite Sci-Fi TV Series from the 1970s. I own this great collection of Season 1 videos.
UFO is about SHADO, an organization to stop the alien invasion of earth. It was created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson who later produced Space 1999.
