The Subtle Knife Movie

Updated on January 15, 2013

The Subtle Knife Movie - The Latest...

The Subtle Knife is the sequel to The Golden Compass and is the second part in His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.

The Subtle Knife movie was pencilled in for release in late 2009, but has now been put on hold indefinitely due to low box office results in the US and the recession. Personally, I think this is disappointing as this is my favourite book in the trilogy. If you would like to lend your support to the release, please scroll down to find a link to an online petition.

I have developed this lens to highlight potential movements with the movie and to chart any developments with script and director. There may be periods when there is no feed at all due to lack of information. Please feel free to bookmark and check back at a later stage. I will post on here as soon as any news breaks.

What is The Subtle Knife about? - The story so far...

At the end of The Northern Lights, Lyra Silvertongue watched in fear and fascination as her father, Lord Asriel, created a bridge between worlds. Lyra and her daemon, Pantalaimon, are now lost in an alternate universe where they meet Will Parry, a fugitive from a third universe. Will has found a small window between Cittagazze (a place where children roam unchecked but invisible Specters suck the spirit out of adults) and his Oxford, which, with its Burger Kings and cars, is frighteningly different from the Oxford Lyra knows.

Will's father, an explorer, disappeared years ago, but recently some odd characters have started asking questions about him, and now, having accidentally killed one of them, Will is wanted by the police. Armed with the Subtle Knife, a tool that cuts any material (including that which separates universes) and Lyra's alethiometer, the children set out to find John Parry, with adults in desperate pursuit.

Lyra's finest qualities, her courage and quick mind, are stretched to the limit as she has to lie, cheat and steal to keep herself and Will out of danger. However, she must also learn when to tell the truth and when to trust, for, though she does not yet know it, she has a huge part to play in the upcoming battle between Good and Evil.

Why I Love The Subtle Knife

The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, Book 2)
The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, Book 2)

The Subtle Knife is my favourite book in the Dark Materials trilogy. I particularly like the way that it combines 'reality' with fantasy, bringing the main characters of Will and Lyra together via a window that exists between different worlds. There's plenty of action, especially in the nail-biting opening, but Pullman also expands upon the idea of parallel universes - cramming teasers and links into the novel.

Controversy smontroversy, make the sequel already. People already know what is going on in the world and need no book to tell them what is going on in the world. People aren't stupid. Make the sequel already, and leave the determinations of individual governments and religions up to their respective peoples. I am so sick of either the governments, the UN, or the Church trying to tell me what I can watch for fear it will influence my thought processes. The bottom line is the UN wants to become a world government with final say in what goes on in its nation/states, the various churches want control over good vs bad behavior and don't want anyone to think that there are alternative religions (ewe magic may exist, REALLY?), get real, we KNOW this already, it is not a controversy, it is fact, so make the darn sequel already!

I have been severely disappointed in New Line for not making the sequels to The Golden Compass. The sequels are vital to the understanding of the series, and while the first installment is entertaining to be sure, it leaves one wanting more. As for the oooh "controversy". all I can say is WHAT? That is patently ridiculous. We live in a world where controversy is the norm. Oooo, the movie may make people think about governments wanting to control everything, AND?, it may bring thoughts of communism and marxism, and world domination by a global government, I got news, that has been here a while and is NOTHING NEW. The mistake and controversy will come from thinking people are so stupid as not to see what is already here and trying to hide it. Come on New Line, make the sequel already, we don't care about the controversy or parallels it may draw to world government, we aren't little innocent children that we can't see what is going on in the world already. Jeez!

Of course I liked the Golden Compass... WIth "destroyed the series" I mean they destroyed the plans for it.

New Line destroyed the series. We all want to see a sequel, but they prefer some 0.5 version of Lord of the Rings. ==Status of the movie "The Subtle Knife" : No active development== I really hope that they will make a sequel, but without replacing all the actors. Nicole Kidman was great for example...

I live in Oklahoma USA and I find this book to be the greatest thing to hit modern literature and this company throws it aside cause it stirred up too much controversy? What the hell people, the stirring up controversy is why it needs to be made. Harry Potter stirred up a lot of controversy too, but WB didn't care, it was made anyway.

I'm really disappointed that "The Subtle Knife" is being postponed. I'm just wondering if the movie was such a failure, then why is the movie "Another Earth" getting a slow start and has yet to make $1 million.

If anyone has any clue to when real progress is being made, I would love to know.

One of the best trilogy books around, Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials hit a homerun with book lovers around the globe. It would be a mistake not to produce the The Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass to complete the trilogy. George Lucas made millions from his Star Wars saga. If the movies and characters are done right, the Academy will be honoring these sequels with Oscars in the near future.

It's sad in a country where we claim that we are free from God and religion being in our government and social decisions that we still allow the catholic church and religious fanatics to dictate our decisions and laws. That is what we call delusions and denial. To not make a MOVIE because catholics get angry. So now, being a non-catholic, the catholic church gets to dictate what movies get made and what movie I get to see. Wait, isn't that what kind of church these books are putting down? And the Catholic Church is angry because they think it is about them. Hhhmmm. Does anyone else see the correlation? if they didn't see themselves as power hungry, why would they even put up a fight. The guilty are always the first ones to protest something no one else sees a problem with. I think thou doth protest too much!

Hi I can't believe that such a major Film company would be so NEGLIGENT just because of the stupid American Box Office turn down the remainder of the Trilogy for such a narrow market! Hey NEW LINE CINEMA there is a REAL world out there the one the rest of us live in! I'm in Australia and I want to see the rest! Maybe In Australia we live in the dust and you are that really stupid dimension who doesn't get that your opinion doesn't count but the opinion of the viewer WORLD WIDE! Open up you small little minds the the fact the rest of the world might want to see it and not just people form your own IGNORANT country! I'm A Whit Aussie and my opinion counts, you know why? Because I live in the real land of the free and the REAL home of the BRAVE! Our film culture is willing to break the mold and do things a bit differently so why can't you damn YANKS do the same. You release a TRILOGY for you non True ENGLISH speaking people that means 3!!! not 1! You all must be very Dyslexic over there and need to go to a special school! You don't advertise a 2009 Trailer and not Deliver! I for one will be starting a boycott against New Line Cinema in Australia! Once you have no Customers from Australia EVERYONE will follow suit! Oh by the way I live in a Democracy and I can say this with all of my civil Liberties and opinions without breaking any statute and legal agendas! Go get bent and close your doors and let another film company do what you can't and that's FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THEIR CLAIMS AND TEASER TRAILERS! UNETHICAL, UNPROFESSIONAL AND VERY SIMPLE MINDED PEOPLE!

I too hope that the second movie in this trilogy is made. It is by far the best of the three books. I think there would have been a higher demand and more of a need for the second movie had they stuck to the book on the ending for the first movie. The end of the first book was so suspenseful and left on such a cliff hanger, that you have that eagerness to get to the next book. Whereas the movie just ended as if that could have been the end to the story. There was no suspense to the end of the first movie, so I think that's why people are not as eager for the second movie, especially those who have not read the books. I do hope they decide to make The Subtle Knife for all the true fans of the His Dark Materials trilogy. And hopefully soon before the young actress that plays Lyra gets too old to play the part. I hate it when they use a different actor for a main role in a sequel. (Like the new Victoria in the Twilight series, Eclipse).

I really hope that they continue with the second movie, His Dark Materials. What a shame that different ways of looking at our universe can be squashed so easily. I still can't believe this happens in our current times. I am becoming more anti-religious as these occurrences keep happening. Between the fight to pull the movie together financially and assure itself that religious assertiveness does not interfere with box office income it is a slippery slope. I hope that new ideas keep coming so our minds can pull these ideas together and come up with our own conclusions about the universe in which we live.

      Nice work on the 'trailer'!

I also thought this was a well designed and considered 'Lens'. There is some meat here, not just senseless advertising. Your product links are directly related to the topic, and would certainly be of help to those truly interested in the 'His Dark Materials' series.

Good work and good luck with it!
