The Dukes of Hazzard

Updated on October 25, 2014

Summary

In 1979, The Dukes of Hazzard, with its down home country humor & values, quickly became a ratings hit. With their souped up '69 Charger, the Duke boys, their cousin Daisy and Uncle Jesse, fought the system... namely Boss Hogg and Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane.

Boss Hogg always had one money-making scheme or another going and it usually involved framing something on the Dukes or trying to snooker them out of their farm. Rosco, Boss' trusty side-kick, was usually tasked to do all the dirty work.

The best episodes always involved the Dukes, Boss, and Rosco having to work together to defeat a common threat. In the end, the Dukes always prevailed.

For a small town, they sure had a lot of action!

The Dukes of Hazzard was created by Gy Waldron. It was essentially a re-working of the movie Moonrunners, an earlier project of Waldron's, which was based on the life and exploits of former moonshiner Jerry Rushing. The Dukes of Hazzard premiered as a mid-season replacement on January 26, 1979 and lasted seven seasons.

Dukes of Hazzard Opening Credits

Dukes of Hazzard Theme Song Lyrics

Just two good ol' boys

Never meanin' no harm

Beats all you never saw

Been in trouble with the law

Since the day they were born

Straightenin' the curves

Flattenin' the hills

Someday the mountain might get 'em

But the law never will

Makin' their way

The only way they know how

That's just a little bit more

Than the law will allow

Just two good ol' boys

Wouldn't change if they could

Fightin' the system

Like a two modern-day Robin Hood

Boss Hogg

Hazzard County Commissioner

Boss Hogg was a glutton in every sense of the word. He loved food... food and money. Those were the two things that made Boss happy.

In his younger years, he ran moonshine with Jesse Duke, but their friendship eventually became a rivalry. In his quest for money and power, Boss parted ways with Jesse.

As commissioner of Hazzard, he had his fingers into every business in the county. He and Rosco always had some scam going that usually included framing the Dukes or trying to foreclose on their farm.

Boss Hogg may have been a scoundrel, but when the chips were down, he'd come through for his friends.

He's married to Lulu (Coltrane), Rosco's sister. They have no children.

Rosco P. Coltrane

Hazzard Sheriff

Rosco P. Coltrane was the bumbling sheriff of Hazzard County. Having lost his pension in a bond election, he decided to stray from the straight and narrow and grab all the money he could before his retirement. As a result, he was in Boss Hogg's hip pocket. Whatever scheme Boss Hogg had going, Rosco was in the middle of it.

There's one thing Rosco loved more than money... and that's chasin' the Duke boys. As the balladeer once said, "Rosco would rather catch the Duke boys than go to heaven when he dies." More often than not, Rosco's chases ended up with him in Hazzard Pond or up a tree. He truly was a study in frustration.

He is brother-in-law to Boss Hogg, brother to Lulu Hogg, and has a bassett hound named Flash.

Uncle Jesse Duke

Duke Family Patriarch

Uncle Jesse is a respected member of Hazzard and guide and mentor to the Duke cousins. He's an old Ridge Runner (moonshiner) and long time friend/rival to Boss Hogg.

Luke Duke

Luke Duke is the eldest of the Duke cousins. He is the "thinker" of the group, always coming up with solutions to problems and great shuck n' jives to foil Boss' schemes.

Daisy Duke

Cousin to Bo and Luke, Daisy works at the Boar's Nest as a waitress and often gets involved in getting Bo and Luke out of whatever trouble they find themselves in. She's often too trusting and naïve (see episode "Daisy's Song"), but can handle herself pretty well. Bo, Luke, and Uncle Jesse are often overprotective of her.

Bo Duke

Bo, the youngest of the Duke cousins, is also the wildest of the three. Unlike his cousin Luke, he's not one to look before he leaps into action. He usually drives the General Lee and had a short career as a NASCAR driver.

Cooter Davenport

Cooter is an auto mechanic and good friend to the Dukes. He spends most of his time fixing the General Lee and participating in whatever adventures the Duke cousins find themselves in. His nickname is "Crazy Cooter" and in the early episodes, he earned the moniker through his wild behavior. He settled down and matured over the course of the show.

Enos Strait

Hazzard Deputy Sheriff

Enos is a good friend of the Dukes, but by virtue of his job as Hazzard County Deputy, he often found himself conflicted on whether or not to carry out orders by Boss Hogg against his friends. He was in love with Daisy Duke and reported to be the oldest virgin in Hazzard.

Cletus Hogg

Hazzard Deputy Sheriff

Cletus was Boss Hogg's second cousin twice removed. He often participated in Boss Hogg's schemes against the Dukes, though on occasion objected. He was dim-witted and often fooled into allowing the Dukes to escape from jail.

The General Lee

The General Lee was the Dukes souped up 1969 Dodge Charger. It was arguably the star of the show, getting the Dukes out of trouble with its stunts that often defied the laws of physics. During the run of the show, the General Lee got more fan mail than the actors themselves.
