Top 10 Floor Standing Speakers Review

Updated on December 2, 2010

Floor Standing Speakers Review

For most people, the image of a home theater system is centered on a big high-definition TV or even a projector and movie screen. But the sound system associated with the setup is every bit as important to creating a great theater experience.

Consumers have many options when it comes to speaker selection. Home theater-in-a-box systems are popular largely because they're easy to buy and set up and are generally rather economical. Complete home theater speaker systems are also available.

The speakers featured on this site are the next step up. While they excel as the main left-right speakers in a surround sound setup, they're also made to perform on their own to create great stereo music. Top-quality music reproduction is beyond the capabilities of most speakers that are included in a home theater system. This guide will assist you in choosing entry level floor standing speakers that will enhance your home theater experience while satisfying your hunger for great music.

Here are the top 10 floor standing speakers in descending order. For the full review click on the link. For more info, see our summaries below.

#1Polk Audio TSi400

Winner of the TopTenReviews "Gold Award"

The Polk Audio TSi 400 audio speakers offer high enough audio fidelity that they can be at home in all but the highest-end audiophile music systems. That makes them exceptional performers as the primary speakers for most home theater applications. They are covered by a 5-year parts and labor warranty.

#2 Klipsch Reference Series RF-52

Winner of the TopTenReviews "Silver Award"

The audio speakers feature in this review site are aimed towards consumers who want to achieve a home theater sound experience that is beyond that which can typically be achieved with all inclusive systems. Beyond that, these are speakers that can be used as high quality stereo speakers for great sounding music reproduction. The Klipsch Reference Series RF-52 home audio speakers epitomize these goals. Of course, they fall short of being top-end, audiophile speakers but they come remarkably close given their size and price.

#3 Infinity Primus P362

Winner of the TopTenReviews "Bronze Award"

We’re particularly fond of the warm, lifelike bass response that is provided by the Infinity Primus P362 speakers. Similarly rated speakers have good bass response, but Infinity’s dual woofers produce tones that are overall more pleasing. They’re terrific as the main speakers in a surround sound home theater system, but are remarkably good audio speakers as well for enjoying great stereo music.

#4 JBL ES80

The JBL ES80 is a very musical speaker with great detail in the high ranges and surprisingly tight bass. We were particularly pleased with the powerful and tight bass performance. These speakers need to be fed high quality power, so don’t pair very well with lower-end receivers. With the right power source though, they’re great for home theater use or as standalone speakers in a good stereo system.

#5 Boston Acoustics CS 226

The Boston Acoustics CS 226 floor standing audio speaker is very well suited to just about any home theater installation. Indeed it’s good enough that it represents a good choice for some pretty serious stereo music listening as well. Low bass reproduction is the speaker’s weakest point and the addition of a subwoofer is a good move. The overall sound is likely a little bit calm for listeners who seek extremes in any particular sonic characteristic.

#6 Cerwin-Vega XLS-28

Despite some reservations about the overall bass response of the Yamaha NS-555 speaker, we still regard it as a good choice for use as the main left-right speaker in a home theater surround sound system where bass will be augmented by a subwoofer. At its rather modest price, it also represents a good value for use as the standalone speakers for a stereo music system.

#7Sony SS-F7000

The Sony SS-F7000 floor standing speakers produce a remarkably wide frequency response. All but the most particular of audiophiles are likely to find their musical performance more than adequate and they are a terrific upgrade as main speakers within a home theater system. Their relatively low price makes them a superior bargain.

#8 Yamaha NS-555

Despite some reservations about the overall bass response of the Yamaha NS-555 speaker, we still regard it as a good choice for use as the main left-right speaker in a home theater surround sound system where bass will be augmented by a subwoofer. At its rather modest price, it also represents a good value for use as the standalone speakers for a stereo music system.

#9 Aperion Intimus 4T

The Aperion Intimus 4T offers a narrower frequency response and less sensitivity that the other speaker on this review site. Bass performance is rather disappointing but a good subwoofer can solve the problem. That being the case, we find it to be better suited as part of a home theater surround sound system than as a standalone stereo music speaker.

#10 KEF C5

We found the overall sound quality of the KEF C5 floor standing speaker to be somewhat disappointing compared to its respectable specs. It lacks the dramatic presentation that we found with other speakers in this survey. Frankly, the C5 doesn’t live up to the standard we’ve seen with other KEF speakers. For the price, we’d suggest auditioning other more highly rated speakers featured on this review site.
