The Loviest Hats to Grace Film

People like to indicate that a hats for women is a representation of her character and spirit. If this is true then this made doubly true for hats wore by women in films since costumes are always an extension of characterization.

This page looks at the Top Ten Womens hats in film. The hats were ranked by aesthetics, memorability, and naturally, how it reflects the character of the film.

In the interest of diversity only hat per film. And I did count bonnets for hats.

I must confess my own subjective taste might have creep into this list a bit.

Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White
Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White

Number #10

Mrs. White, Clue

Mrs.White played by Madeline Kahn, is a cool femme fatal.

Her black attire is in contrast to her alias. Through the first half of the movie she wears this stylish yet sombre cocktail hat. It’s pure black with a lace veil. There is no doubt that this fits her perfectly.

Samantha Mathis as Amy March

Amy March, Little Women

Adult Amy March, played by Samantha Mathis, wears this green straw hat while she is meeting with her former childhood friend, Theodore Laurence.

It has a prim veil and a large ribbon that forms a bow in front and a larger almost bustle in back. This hat reflects Amy’s grown-up elegant persona.

Marie Antoinette is one of those movies that is known for its stunning costumes.

Of all the hats wore by Marie Antoinette, played by Kirsten Dunst, this blue tricorne is a very memorable one.

Typically tricorne hats are military but this one is super feminine. It matches her dress which is a light almost purple color. It has a lots of decoration. It fits Marie’s girly young personality.

The Great Gatsby is an ostentatious movie where all the costumes are over-the-top.

This cloche style hat wore by Jordan, played by Elizabeth Debicki, is a cream color with an asymmetrical detail and rhinestone stick pin detail.

It communicates her modern 1920’s attitude. This hat was used on the film's promotion.

Keira Knightley as Georgiana

Georgiana, played Keira Knightley, wears a multitude of hats in The Duchess.

All of them are memorable and beautiful but I have to give it to this straw hat with its lovely shape, black trim and sculpted feathers. It’s very tasteful, refined and a bit playful and rebellious which fits the duchess‘ character perfectly.

Emily Blunt as Victora

Another movie that has tons of lovely costumes and bonnet, The Young Victoria is a great costume drama. Of the many bonnets Victoria, played by Emily Blunt, wears in this movie, this charming blue bonnet is loveliest.
