Top 10 Sports Movies

Updated on April 15, 2013

Best Sports Movies... From Someone Who's Not a Sports Fan

Let me say right off the bat, I'm not a fan of sports. If I'm somewhere with sports on TV, I leave the room. But I do love movies and decided to challenge myself and write about my top 10 sports movies.

Why not? We all need to stretch once in awhile.

A few of these movies may not even be considered sports movies, but if a bat or ball or hoop or a race of some kind shows up more than once, to me it's a sports movie.

After reading my choices for best sports movies, the ball will be in your court. You can vote for your favorite, or let me know how crazy I am for leaving out your favorite. Just don't throw in the towel till you see which ones I chose.

(Okay, enough of the sports analogies. We're all on the same team after all. Yuck yuck yuck!)

Best Sports Movies

Top Sports Movies -- #1: Moneyball - It's not about sports; it's about market inefficiencies.

Release Date: 2011

Stars: Brad Pitt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jonah Hill, Robin Wright

The Sport: Baseball

Thoughts on This Movie: In a conversation between my son, who studied economics, and me, who didn't study economics:

Me: I watched Moneyball yesterday. It was SO good! Have you read the book or seen it?

My son: Oh really? Wow. I've more or less read the book.

Me: I was surprised.

My son: (smile) It's just about market inefficiencies.

Me: Okay. I thought it was about choosing baseball players. doh.

My son: That's a specific case!

(end of conversation, this is me again) Whatever this movie is about, I loved it. I watched it twice in just a few days' time.

Best Movies About Sports -- #2: Hoosiers - Small but Mighty

Release Date: 1986

Stars: Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper

The Sport: Basketball

My Favorite Part: When the coach (Gene Hackman) takes his team from their small town in Indiana to the gym where they'll play in the state championship and has the guys measure the height of the basketball hoop and the court. Turns out it's the same as in their little gym back home.

Best Sports Films -- #3: Rudy - A Sports Movie with Heart

Release Date: 1993

Stars: Sean Astin, Ned Beatty, Jon Favreau

The Sport: Football

My Favorite Part: The end of course. Well, actually, the whole thing. Rudy had a dream and nothing was going to stop him from fulfilling it.

Top Movies with Sports -- #4: The Blind Side - It's not about sports either; it's about opportunity.

Release Date: 2009

Stars: Quinton Aaron, Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw

The Sport: Football

Thoughts on This Movie: In our continued conversation, my son, who is much smarter than me, and I discussed sports movies some more:

Me: It (Moneyball) was LOTS better than The Blind Side. I thought. But I hate football. (pause) I know. It wasn't about football either, right?

My son: "The Blind Side" was about opportunity. "If these college football people almost missed this obvious 6'6" 300 pound kid, who else is society missing out on?"

Top Sports Movies -- #5: Seabiscuit - A Horse Who's an Underdog

Release Date: 2003

Stars: Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, Elizabeth Banks

The Sport: Horse Racing

My Favorite Part: The feel-goodness of it all. Gotta love an underdog. And Seabiscuit is a true story!

Best Movies Sports -- #6: Eight Men Out - A Major League Sports Scandal

Release Date: 1988

Stars: John Cusack, Clifton James, Michael Lerner

The Sport: Baseball

My Favorite Part: The shame of it all. And it's a true story. I love true stories. Even about sports.

Top Sports Films -- #7: Whip It! - From Pageants to Rinks

Release Date: 2009

Stars: Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore

The Sport: Roller Derby

My Favorite Part: When Bliss (Ellen Page) starts practicing roller blading in her street. She's so bad.

Top Sports Movies -- #8: A League of Their Own - Girls Rule!

Release Date: 1992

Stars: Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty, Tom Hanks, Jon Lovitz

The Sport: Baseball

My Favorite Part: Dottie (Geena Davis) and Jimmy (Tom Hanks) sitting on the bench chewing and spitting. Oh, and girl power. I liked the girl power in this movie.

Best Sports Films -- #9: Bull Durham - Sports with a Great Love Story to Boot

Release Date: 1988

Stars: Susan Saradon, Tim Robbins, Kevin Costner

The Sport: Baseball

My Favorite Part: The fact that Annie (Susan Sarandon) plays catch with the minor league players in her backyard. And when she teaches Nuke (Tim Robbins) how not to think when he pitches.

Top Sports Movies -- #10: Brian's Song - Sports, Friendship, and Heartbreak

Release Date: 1971

Stars: James Caan, Billy Dee Williams, Jack Warden

The Sport: Football

My Favorite Part: The friendship between these players and the fact that it was a true story.

Brian's song has got to be one of the best sport's movies (and tear jerkers) around. I think I'm the only person in the world who was bored with The Blind Side. Good list of sports movies. You've got me thinking now....

@Frischy: Yes, it was all right. I am not a Kevin Costner fan though. I had to make myself add Bull Durham.

Field of Dreams was pretty good. I also liked The Natural.
