Top 5 Christian Hip/Hop Rap Artists

Updated on September 20, 2012

My Top 5 Christian Hip/hop and Rap Artists

Do you love Christian hip/hop and rap? You've come to the right place! Here are my top 5 favorite artists!

I got into hip/hip a few years ago when I first heard Lecrae on a friends iPod. Googled him, and instantly loved his music. Now I own almost every album that he has released. From Lecrae, I learned of my other favorite artists, and now have a large hip/hop/rap collection in my iTunes. :)

Christian Hip/hop?

In case you didn't know what Christian hip/hop is exactly, I'll tell you. To quote Wikipedia, "Christian hip hop (originally Gospel rap, also known as Christian rap, Gospel hip hop, or holy hip hop) is hip hop music characterized by a Christian worldview, with the general purposes of evangelization (Christian mission work), edifying members of the church, and entertaining with respect to both of those aims."

#1 Lecrae

1. Lecrae

My #1 favorite hip/hop artist has got to be Lecrae. He was the first Christian rapper I ever heard, and I love every album he's released. Not only does his music sounds great, his lyrics are incredible. They are chock full of Godly lessons and advice, and there's a song for so many situations in our lives. He's beats are awesome also, and he mixes up the sound of all his songs, form softer songs to more hardcore rapping. Lecrae is signed to Reach Records, the record label that he co-founded. So far Lecrae has released six solo studio albums.

Gravity

Lecrae's Latest Album

Lecrea's latest album is Gravity. Released on September 4, 2012, Gravity is a follow-on album from Church Clothes (mixtape). It's an amazing album, with some epic tracks. And of course, epic lyrics. Lecrae says "Obviously, there's more risk involved in terms of just making more mature music that's not as straight [and] explicit. it's dealing with bigger issues. People may have to think a little bit more. The production is a lot bigger and more advanced than it's been. Lyrically, as an artist, I think I've written some of the best lyrics I've ever written."

Don't Waste Your Life - One of my favorite Lecrae videos

This is one of my favorite Lecrae albums, from one of his earlier albums 'Rebel'. Take a look!

#2 Tedashii

2. Tedashii

#2 on my list has to be Tedashii. His music is amazing. He has quite a different sound to Lecrae, with more heavy beats and booms. Just like Lecrae, he's a very talented rapper and has great lyrics. I think the thing I like most about Tedashii is the motivational power of his songs. If you ever need a boost, listen to some Tedashii and your mood will improve :)

Blacklight

Tedashii's Latest Album

Tedashii's latest album is called 'Blacklight'. Released May 24, 2011, it's an amazing album. One of Tedashii's best by far! The theme of the album (quoted from Wikipedia) is: "According to the official online release, Tedashii did this album with the intent of speaking to "the hearts of believers with the hope of eternity spent with Christ, no longer living in guilt for what has been uncovered in our lives", as found in 2 Corinthians 4:16,17:

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.." An epic theme for an epic album in my opinion! Many of the tracks have great beats and depth.

Need It Daily (feat PRo) - One of my favorite Tedashii videos

#3 Trip Lee

3. Trip Lee

#3 on my list is Trip Lee. Trip reminds me of Lil Wayne a little in the way he raps (only he's waayyy better than Lil Wayne). His music has orchestral instruments mixed in with the beats (at least in his latest album), which sounds great. Again, like all these rappers, his lyrics are inspiring in so many ways.

The Good Life

The Good Life is Trip Lee's latest album, which was released early 2012. Some of favorite songs on the album include: 'I'mg Good', 'Fallin', and 'Love On Display'. According to Wikipedia "The Good Life debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of over 22,000 units, making it the third highest charting Christian Hip Hop Album of all-time (tied with Lecrae's Rehab)."

The Invasion (Hero) - Great Trip Lee Video

#4 PRo

4. PRo

PRo has some epic music, which is why he's #4 on my list. I've only got some of his songs, which is why he's lower on my list, as I can't really make too much of a judgment. Plus, he's only a fairly new player on the scene of hip/hop. But he sure has some sweet beats and lyrics, and I think he'll be one of the top Christian rappers in years to come.

Dying To Live

(And Redemption)

PRo has a new album just out called 'Dying To Live'. This is a great CD, that comes highly recommended. It's been a great addition to my hip/hop collection. PRo's previous and first album 'Redemption' is amazing for an artists debut. I highly recommend it, especially if you like more hardcore rap. Well worth the listen.

Get It - One of PRo's own music videos

#5 Cross Movement

5. Cross Movement

Cross Movement is the last on the top 5 list. Started in 1996, The Cross Movement has been around for many years now, and some rappers like Lecrae mention how they listened to them when they were younger. According to Wikipedia, "The CM's niche has been to translate biblical and Christian theology into rap music by using the same hyper-aggressive lyrics, sampled orchestral riffs, alliteration, and virtuoso delivery of many underground rappers without the self-aggrandizing and violent lyrics, or the materialistic imagery stereotypically associated with many rappers." This is why I love them. They have the same great sound that many secular rappers have, but they incorporate Christian theology into the songs. A truly inspiring group, and I hope to get more of their albums in the future. Unfortunately, they are no longer active, but they're still definitely worth checking out.

Higher Definition

Higher Definition I don't have this album yet, but it's worth the listen. :) According to Wikipedia, "Higher Definition is the 6th and final original album from the Christian hip hop group the Cross Movement, released on August 22, 2007. It recently received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Or Rap Gospel Album."

Notable Mention: 116 Clique

116 Clique

116 is amazing! (I really should should rank them higher ;) ). This group is a collaboration of most of the above artists into one group. The result? Pure awesomeness. They have some amazing music, solidly grounded in Biblical teaching. Their latest album, "Man Up" is all about Biblical manhood. It's got some epic beats, and the lyrics are even better! Highly recommended! The name 116 clique refer's to the Bible verse Romans 1:16.

I'm with Genycis most of the Christian Rap I heard has Southern style beats that I have a certain distaste for, but I've heard a few good ones with a nice beat I can actually vibe to.

I like some like manafest and occasionally breaking benjiman, though they are more hard than i'm used to. I listen to christian rap and hip hop but i mainly listen to christian rock like skillet, demon hunter, red, p86, mxpx, linkin park (a little) and a bunch of others but i usually listen to pandora a lot so i don't have a main favorite i listen to all the time.

Don't know if this is gonna show up or not, since my other ones didn't, but here's some of my favorites: The Rep, Bizzle, Bumps INF, Canon, GRITS, Sevin and HOG MOB (even though they're more like God believing gangsters), Eshon Burgundy, D-Maub, Thi'sl, Common Knowledge, KJ-52 (not really hard rap, kinda popish), Suzy Rock, Lavoisier, P-Dub, Jin... Along with so many more Ican't think of right now

I've never really listened too deep into Christian Rap at all... I love 90's boom bap hip hop personally, but all the tracks I've heard that were Christian Rap tracks were either made with softer sounding beats, or were trying to be so crunk I couldn't feel the track. That said though, some of what I heard above is good, especially Cross Movement (fits my flava of rap and rap beats to the 90's type flava I love about hip hop). Nice lens!! I may have to look into Cross Movement's album now. Thanks!

Nice lens! I always enjoy reading about new styles of music, and hip hop specifically. I don't really have a favorite Christian hip hop group, but when I was in college I used to live in the same complex as a group called GRITS. They were real down to earth and used to give me free copies of their CDs to listen to. It was really good stuff! Not sure if they are still making music nowadays though.
