Top Grossing Movies 2013

Updated on October 3, 2013

Highest Grossing Movies 2013

I'm willing to go out on a limb and list what are likely to be the top 10 grossing movies of 2013. I first wrote this page at the beginning of 2013. Although that was a little early in the year to tell you the highest grossing movies of 2013, they were the movies I thought would perform best at the box office.

They are also likely to be the most popular movies of 2013. The movies that will appeal to the largest audiences and people will most want to see. Many of these 2013 movies come with big budgets and special effects.

Last year, the top 10 grossing movies performed spectacularly at the cinema. More tickets were sold than ever before and 2013 looks to be even better! Keep reading to discover the most likely films to be the highest grossing movies of 2013 and why I have chosen those movies. If nothing else, it will be interesting to come back nearer the end of the year to see how right or wrong I was.

So far, I'm not doing badly at all. So far I anticipated seven out of the current highest grossing movies of the year. However, the year isn't over and there are still movies due to be released which will knock out some of the current ones.

Listed in order of cinema dates

I don't think we're in Kansas Toto...

— Dorothy

Oz The Great and Powerful

Oz The Great and Powerful is now available on DVD, as shown in the picture to the right.

Older audiences can return to the land of Oz from March 8th 2013, when Oz The Great and Powerful lands in cinema's. Younger audiences can experience the magic for the first time.

Don't expect to see Dorothy though as this is a kind of prequel to the Wizard of Oz. This is the story of the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz and how he came to be in Oz. Audiences will understand how it is that he knew how to return Dorothy home to Kansas, or even where Kansas was.

All the same elements are there that made the original movie such a hit. There's good witches and evil witches. There's flying monkeys and the munchkins. Audiences can see the Emerald City again and meet new magical characters and creatures.

The backdrops and images are stunning and are sure to inspire another generation to love the land of Oz.

You can click her and be taken to the latest Oz The Great and Powerful Merchandise.

The Croods

The Croods now available on DVD and with a bonus Belt toy, as shown on the right.

From March 22nd 2013, be prepared to go back in time. Way back in time!

Audiences will love this pre-historic family. There's a character for everyone including an overprotective father, a silly brother, a cute little baby and a granny that says some of the funniest things ever.

This movie is all about what happens when the oldest daughter decides to go against her father and explore the world outside the cave. It's kinda like Jurassic Park mixed with Ice Age.

With voices provided by Ryan Reynolds, Nicholas Cage and others, it's sure to be a hit.

The Croods is an animated movie that the whole family will love!

If you are looking for the latest movie toys including Belt the Sloth and the characters from the movie then check out The Croods Merchandise, including the soft toys that everyone is raving about.

The Host

Wondering what could be the next Twilight movie to capture the hearts and minds of teens and romantics everywhere? Well I'm putting my money on The Host, expected in cinema's from March 29th 2013.

Not only is it based on a book, but it's also written by the same author of Twilight - Stephenie Meyer.

Early reports of the movie have indicated that it will follow the book fairly closely. This means fans of Twilight will find similarities in The Host. There's a love triangle. Every good movie needs one of those these days!

Some of the characters are special, but instead of supernatural beings they are aliens that have taken control of people's bodies, and in most cases their minds too.

Everyone is looking for The Host contact lenses.

Iron Man 3

On May 3rd 2013, fans will be lining up to see what happens to Tony Stark and Iron Man.

Superhero movies tend to do fairly well and there are always a few of them on the top 10 grossing movies list of the year. Last year, The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man movie all made the list.

I expect Iron Man 3 has a fairly good chance of making the list, especially after the success of last years movie where Iron Man teamed up with other comic book heroes to save the day.

I think the new Iron Man 3 merchandise looks really cool. I think the kids will love the Lego versions of key scenes of the movie and also the latest figures including the War Machine.

Star Trek Into Darkness

From May 17th 2013 Star Trek fans will be lining up to see the next installment in the Star Trek series - Star Trek Into Darkness.

Man of Steel

From June 14th 2013 Superman fans will have the opportunity to see another Superman reboot in the form of Man of Steel.

You can click here for the latest Superman Man of Steel merchandise.

You might think another Superman film won't be popular, but the same thing happened with Spiderman last year and it was a huge box office hit. I anticipate the same will happen with Man of Steel.

After watching the trailer, even I am eager to watch Henry Cavill tackle the role of Clark Kent by day and Superman when danger occurs.

With Kevin Costner playing the role of Clark's human father and Russel Crow playing his biological father, it looks to be a great cast. And this time round, the story of Superman is set to be more emotional and to dig deeper into the thoughts and feelings of the characters.

The trailer makes me think of it as a modern day Gladiator movie. Since that was such a hit and one of my all time favorite movies of all time, I hope Man of Steel doesn't fall short.

Monsters University

Mike and Sully will return to the big screen from June 21st 2013 in Monsters University. And we'll be going back in time with them. Back to when they went to university to learn to be Scarers.

Kids movies tend to do really well at the box office and I expect good things from Monsters University. Fans of Monsters Inc have been waiting patiently for another Monsters movie. They captured our hearts, along with Boo back in 2001.

Although Boo isn't featured in this movie, we will get to see what life is like for monsters that go on to college and train to have a career. It's going to be hilarious and adults will love this movie as much as their kids.

All our favorite voices will be returning including including John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Steve Buscemi. Look out for new voices such as Kelsey Grammar.

If Monsters University meets expectations then every kid on the block is going to want the latest Monsters University merchandise including the latest toys, clothing and posters.

Despicable Me 2

From July 3rd 2013 the minions are back in Despicable Me 2.

With the voices of Steve Carell, Al Pacino, Steve Coogan and Russell Brand this movie is bound to be a hit with the kids, along with their parents.

What will the minions get up to this time? You'll have to see the movie to figure that out. Whatever it is, it's bound to be funny.

Kids loved the first movie and I think they will be begging their parents to take them to this one!

Johnny Depp makes his appearance at cinemas from July 3rd 2013 as Tonto in The Lone Ranger.

The Smurfs 2 DVD
The Smurfs 2 DVD

Smurfs 2

Are you ready to see how Smurfette really feels from July 31st 2013 onwards?

In the Smurfs 2 she'll be tempted to misbehave and join Gargamel in his conquest to make new versions of the Smurfs. He's decided to try his hand at making his own little people, but seems to be missing one vital ingredient.

Smurfette and the Naughties (Gargamels creations) go on an adventure in Paris, while the Smurfs try to get Smurfette back before any real damage happens. Plus she's their girl!

This movie will probably be very popular as those who grew up in the 70's and 80's can take their kids to watch a cartoon they loved so much when they themselves were kids. Plus Smurfette is so cute, as are the other Smurfs.

The Mortal Instruments
The Mortal Instruments

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones could have Twilight fans lining up at cinema's from August 23rd 2013.

Based on the books written by Cassandra Clare, it could give The Hunger Games a run for it's money!

Since it already has a built in audience from the books, it could be a big hit at the cinema. If it is then there are likely to be subsequent movies, since there are at least five books which could be adapted for the big screen.

Like Twilight, this movie has bags of teen drama and a supernatural element. Instead of just vampires and werewolves there are Shadowhunters. These Shadowhunters are believed to be descendants of Angels and fight to protect the human realm from dangers they couldn't comprehend.

Of course a love triangle comes as standard on these types of movies.

The Hunger Games Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

On the 22nd of November The Hunger Games Catching Fire will be in cinema's. Fans are waiting eagerly for the second installment of this movie franchise.

The second movie based on the series of books of the same name were green lit before the first film even aired. However, that was clearly the right decision as the Hunger Games was 9th on the top grossing movies of 2012 list.

I anticipate fans of the book and the first film will want to see what happens to Katniss and Peta in the next installment.

Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug

From December 13th 2013 the Hobbit returns for the second installment. I am hoping this finds a place on the list of top grossing movies of 2013.

It is a fantasy epic that already has a huge fan base. Not only people who loved the book but also fans of The Lord of the Rings books and movies.

The world already knows that Peter Jackson does amazing work and brings the story to life before the audiences eyes. The only problem is that a single book has been split into three separate movies. It doesn't seem to have affected the first installment of the movie too badly.

I am still excited to go and see this movie in the cinema. It's rare to have such a fantasy epic to see on a large screen. It never feels the same watching it at home.
