Top Ten Costumes in Downton Abbey
Downton Abbey is an immensely popular show from the UK that has just started airing its 5th season in the UK. All the costumes in the show are lovely but which ones stand-out? Which ones are the most memorable? And which represent the character the best? Very tough questions to answer since like every costume in this show is immensely beautiful, but I will do my best.
This page focuses on the Top Ten Costumes for the Ladies from the show. There are some spoilers so read with caution.

Cora's Grey Debut Gown, Season 4
Cora wears this Grey Gown when she presents Lady Rose at Buckingham Palace. It a sheath dress with a dropped waist which was the style in the 1920’s. At the neckline and sleeves it has white beading with tassels off the arms. It’s very beautiful and refined
Mary's Striped Summer Dress, Season 1
Wore during the flower show episode and the season1 finale, Mary's striped dress is both casual and quite pretty. The square neckline is framed by lace add as refined touch while differing directions of the stripes adds interest.

Edith's Pink Gown, Season 1
One Edith's prettiest gowns is her pink gown. It's covered in floral embroidery and beads. The bodice is curved over the bust and the sleeves are short and gathered at the shoulder. The neckline is scooped. Edith wears this gown as she overhears Mary and Cora talking negatively about her which puts the wheel in motion for her to reveal Mary's scandal.
Rose’s Debutante Gown, Season 4
Rose wears this lovely gown when she is presented at court during the fourth season Christmas special. It is white with almost most a pinkish hue to it, which is very fitting for a debutante. The fabric also has a silver metallic embroidery running through it. It has the signature dropped waist along with a scalloped over skirt. It also has a floral trim along the neck, on the overlay skirt and her veil. It’s the perfect gown for a 1920’s lively debutante like Rose.
Mary's Blue Gown, Season 2
Towards the end of Season 2 Mary wears a dark blue sleeveless gown. It has double straps and black lace of the front and back of the bodice. The skirt has sheer black overlay with some rosette detail on it. Mary wore with gown in the final episode of season 2 where she danced with Matthew and they shared a kiss.
Mary's Red Gown, Season 1
Mary wears this red gown many times in the course of season 1. She wears it when she kisses Pamuk for the first time and during the salty pudding fiasco. It has flower embroidery that stands out against the deep red of the dress. The bodice is covered by dark red pleated chiffon overlay. The overlay extends into little flutter sleeves that have an cut-out detail. This dress reflects Mary's bold personality.
Edith's Wedding Gown, Season 3
Edith's wedding gown is very elegant and often prefer to Mary's. It's has a modest scoop neckline. It has long sheer sleeves. The gown are a hip detail that gathers that add a slight gather to the bodice. The back of the gown has crisscross details that is framed by a long train that starts at the shoulders. The dress is covered in gold leave embroidery. The show claims the designer is "Lucille."
Edith’s Criterion Gown, Season 4 a.k.a Beadith
Edith wears this stunning gown when she meets Michael Gregson at the Criterion. It’s a teal color and the details are similar to a peacock which to Edith transformation into a Lady with Career in the literary world. It has the classic 20’s dropped waist and it has a high slit. This gown is chic and it was nice to see Edith happy.
Mary's Proposal Gown, Season 2
At the end of the Season 2 Christmas special Mary wears a Red-Violet sleeveless gown. The v-neckline has a beaded trim and at the middle there is a pendent detail. The skirt is tiered. The tiered layer all have scallop edge and altering tiers have a bead trim. Mary wears this gown when Matthew proposed to her.
Sybil's Pants, Season 1
One of the most remembered costume on Downton Abbey was Sybil's Pants. It shows clearly shows her forward-thinking and progressive spirit all with a feminine sensibility. The pants are harem and one leg is a light blue and the other is a dark blue. The light blue side has a sheer overlay. The bodice has heavy paisley embroidery and sheer gold fabric makes up the scoop neckline. The elbow length sleeve use the gold fabric as and overlay and cover a light blue fabric. It a statement costume and the shows stand-out costume.
Mary’s Black House Party Gown, Season 4
I debated whether or not to include this gown of Mary’s on the list, in the end I didn’t but the neckline is so lovely that I just had to mention it for the moment.
Alas there are so many lovely costumes in this show and season 5 is shaping up to have many more.
