Best Tamil Songs by A R Rahman from the 90s (1992-1995)

Updated on September 4, 2013

A R Rahman, the Mozart of Madras

A R Rahman is an exceptional music composer from India. He is well known for producing many a musical master pieces, such as Roja (1992), Bombay (1995), Indian (1996) and Taal (1999). His compositions have featured in some Hollywood movies such as Couples Retreat and The Accidental Husband.

The whole world stood up and took notice, when he won two Oscar award for his composition in the movie titled "Slumdog Millionair". The well acclaimed song "Jai Ho" fetched him the Oscar in the "Best Original Song" category.

He has composed hundreds of soul stirring songs that remain in the heart forever. I have listed ten of his Compositions that I like the most. This is my tribute to the musical genius and his fans.

Chinna Chinna Aasai (Roja)

Introduced freshness and novelty into Indian film music.

This was Rahman's first ever composition for a Movie. Sung by a new singer named Minmini, the song was an instant hit. I rate the song very highly, because it had the freshness of youth and an evergreen feel attached to it. The composition was very catchy and simple and the entire soundtrack was composed by Rahman himself without any assistance. He introduced a lot of innovations in Indian film music composition and this was the first step he made in the direction of doing greater things in the world of music. The composition in the film earned him a National award, which is a remarkable and unparalleled achievement.

Watch out for the beautiful flute right at the beginning of the song and the bass guitar that adds to the likability of the song.

Netru Illadha Matram (Pudhiya Mugam)

For the seamless use of traditional Indian instruments along with Western instruments.

This maybe the first Indian movie song composed by ARR which made extensive use both traditional and western instruments in unison. This was one of the earlier works of ARR, where he utilizes the flute and piano with so much fineness and aplomb. He also uses the veena to add a carnatic touch to the song. The beats are all so simple and soothing to the ears. Rahman announced himself as an prodigiously talented and innovative composer to the tamil audience with this song. The song also proved that the success of Roja was no fluke.

Look out for the violin, Veena and flute. They are nicely interwoven to give a unique touch to the song.

Senthamizh Naatu Thamizhachiye (Vandicholai Chinraasu)

Its according to me the funniest song composed by ARR

It is an out and out fun song in which the hero teases the heroine for being reluctant to follow tamil traditions. The composition suits the feel of the situation to the hilt. The songs uses a variety of instruments in really funky and odd ways, which actually makes the song unique and incomparable. The singer has rendered the song in a comical and hilarious slang. The lyrics of the song goes overboard at times but the song on a whole is very enjoyable.

Look out for the flute and violin at the middle and the fag end of the song. The beats are funny as well.

The dance is quite comical and overall it's a total fun song.

Anjali Anjali (Duet)

It is one of the best of the best melodies of ARR.

The song is dominated by the Sax which accompanies the singer all the way through till the end of the song. The song starts with an elaborate Sax prelude, which sets the mood for the entire song. The song is lite and crisp and has a profound western touch to it. Almost a minute into the song, the singer (S. P. Balasubramaniam) takes over and does a great work with the song. The song brims with happiness and love. Superb composition by the maestro!!! One of my all time favorite.

Look out for the piano, Sax and Flute that follows the singer all through the song. Divine!

Video clarity is not the best but the song is out of the world.

ARR the humble man

A R Rahman is well known for being a humble person. After he receives an award, He says "ella Pugalum Erivanuke", which means "All the praise goes to God".

He never passes a bad comment about a fellow musician. He is characterized by his calm and humble demeanor, no matter how much he achieves.

Humma Humma (Bombay)

After western, its time for Arabic fusion

The song is one of the peppiest and energetic songs composed by ARR in the 1990-2000 period. The song has a strong arabic feel and all the instruments are straight from Arabian land. The maestro himself has sung the song, making the song even more special. The husky voice is very apt to the feel and mood of the song. ARR reached a new level when this album released. The album experienced unprecidented sales throughout India.

Watch out for Arabic percussion instruments and scale change at the fag end.

Maanooththu Manthaiyile (Kizhakku Cheemayile)

This was ARR's first essay at indian folk genre.

ARR had experiment with different genre such as melody, Western, Pop, etc. in his previous works. But this was the song which proved that he can handle south indian folk. I love this song because of the typical tamil folk feel the song has. What's interesting to note is the kind of instruments that he used in the song to bring about the feel. He used sound schemes that were not commonly associate with folk songs at the time the song was composed. Another interesting thing is the kind of feel each singer exhibits. The female voice shows a bit of sadness which is not overtly apparent and the male voice exhibits exuberance and happiness all the way through.

Watch out for the beats, violin, nadhaswaram and odd sounds that work together to give the song a south indian touch.

The picturisation is not the greatest but the song is worth a listen.
