Upbeat Feel Good Songs
Upbeat Feel Good Songs to Put a SMILE on Your Face!
About 1/2 an hour ago, I was driving home in the rain from grocery shopping, and burst into my usual repertoire of what I consider to be upbeat feel good songs. If you have ever read any of my other articles, you know that I'm WAY into feeling good, empowerment - and, of course, MUSIC!
I've been singing all my life, and I just cannot be in a car without singing almost the entire time (when I'm alone, that is!). Typically, when I visit my dad in New Jersey, I sing for almost the entire 8 hour ride.
I honestly don't think I can help it - it's a habit that began early in life when my dad and I would sing to the radio. :)
So, I began thinking about it, and as the rain came down I realized that sometimes people get depressed if it rains or if it's a Monday (remember "Rainy Days and Mondays" by The Carpenters? Yikes! Talk about a DOWNER of a song!).
I have found that if I sing a happy song or positive affirmation, my mood instantly lifts. So, I decided to compile a few songs here for you to turn to if you ever need a boost! :) This is for you!
Groups That Sang Upbeat Songs One Day... And DOWNER Songs Another...
I remember feeling a little puzzled about The Carpenters back when they were becoming famous. I recall thinking "Close To You" was a pretty nice song, and then when they sang stuff like "Rainy Days and Mondays" I was like, "Huh?" Karen Carpenter struggled with anorexia nervosa, and eventually the effects of that disorder killed her.
I cannot help but wonder how she felt when she was singing. Did she give any thought to the negative emotions in some of those songs? When she sang songs like "Top of the World," did she feel more positive or upbeat?
John tells me that one of the reasons he doesn't like a lot of the folk songs I sing is that they're just too depressing.
So, Here is MY attempt at writing an upbeat song! - "My World is a Glorious Place"
I just made this video today, and YES, I know that the sound quality is terrible - I hastily recorded it in a bathroom, into the computer, with no other equipment. BUT, I also recognize that if I keep putting it off, I'll never get into a recording studio with it. So, at the urging of some kind people on Facebook (Check out the "Positive Music Imperative" page there), I just went ahead and DID IT!!!! So, for whatever it's worth people, here is me, my song, and video - set to photos from my life. :)
"Top of the World" - By The Carpenters
When this first came out in the 1970s, most people I know probably thought it was hokey, shallow "puppy rock." But, I sing it every time I'm in the car. It never fails to cheer me up (unlike that depressing other Carpenters song I mentioned earlier). She had a rich, lovely voice. Too bad she had to leave us so soon...
Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
I absolutely love this song, and have from the very first moment I heard it. I distinctly remember feeling my mood lift 100 feet when I heard it. As a teenager, I was keenly aware of my emotions, and that I tended to be a little depressed over a number of things. For some reason this song had such a positive effect on me! To this very day, I exercise to this upbeat, high energy song! I'd love to meet Katrina and thank her...
Here are a few selections to get started...
What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
I challenge ANYONE to try to remain sad while watching and listening to the inimitable and beloved Louis Armstrong. Sometimes my eyes well up with tears when I listen to it, but it's because it fills me with a joy I can hardly contain.
Certain Show Tunes Can Be Quite Upbeat!
Remember South Pacific?
Growing up, I loved hearing "Happy Talk" - a song from South Pacific. I never got much into history, and didn't really know that the musical was based on James Michener's World War II era "Tales of the South Pacific" book. I just like the music!
Happy Talk (South Pacific) & Oh What A Beautiful Mornin' (Oklahoma) - You Got to Have a Dream...
...If you don't have a dream, how are you going to have a dream come true??
And... I've got a beautiful feelin' everything's going my way!
Songs about Happiness in General - Who Can Resist These?
Bobby McFerrin, "Don't Worry, Be Happy..." Who can resist this? Not me...
The YOUNG Rascals, "Groovin'" - not to be their last upbeat song... they then became known as...
The Rascals, "A Beautiful Morning" I've been singing along with this for over 40 years...
Sometimes Country Songs Can Be UPBEAT
They aren't ALL about losing your girl...dog...mama...
They aren't always about lookin' out of prison bars, or other stuff... Sometimes they are downright fun!
Yesterday, John & I went to the Fryeburg Fair in Fryeburg, Maine (a good ol' timey country fair), and noticed on the schedule that not only was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band playing that evening (darn! Wish we lived a tad closer - we would have definitely gone to that concert) but also Jo Dee Messina was playing tonight.
When we got home, I went over to YouTube and sang along with Jo Dee. Here's what I came up with for tonight!
Jo Dee Messina sings "I'm Alright"
"It's a beautiful day, not a cloud in sight, so I guess I'm doin' alright!"
