How to Dress Like Vanellope von Schweetz
Vanellope von Schweetz is the cute, sassy Sugar Rush glitch from Disney's animated hit Wreck-It Ralph. Looking to create a Vanellope von Schweetz costume for a Halloween party, convention or other cosplay event? This Wreck-It Ralph costume guide has you covered from candy-colored hair accessories to mismatched tights.
Here you'll find instructions and supplies for putting together an inexpensive-yet-authentic Vanellope costume for both adults and children. Although Disney has not yet released a pre-made Vanellope von Schweetz costume, much of this adorable Sugar Rush racer's look can easily be found online or recreated with a little DIY.
Vanellope Von Schweetz Hoodie
Matching the bright minty shade of Vanellope von Schweetz's teal hoodie with a store-bought option may be a challenge. If you are able to find something suitable in a store or online, simply yank out the hood string and replace it with a hot pink shoelace. Finish your look by using the leftover shoelace to recreate the hot pink stitching across the top seam of Vanellope's hoodie pocket.
The plain white cotton of this inexpensive Fruit of the Loom pullover sweatshirt is ideal for dyeing because it will easily absorb the color.
For those who like to get their hands dirty, dyeing your hoodie can be a fun DIY way to create an authentic Vanellope von Schweetz costume. Be sure to choose a plain white pullover sweatshirt that contains at least 50% cotton. The more cotton a hoodie is made of, the easier it will be to dye.
Combine Rit's teal liquid dye (less than $1.50 per bottle!) with Rit's apple green dye to recreate Vanellope's colorful hoodie.
As far as fabric dyes go, I personally recommend Rit. Rit's liquid and powder dyes are inexpensive, easy to use and can be combined to create bold, unique colors like the bright minty green that Vanellope wears. Once dyed, sew some soft grey cotton onto the inside of your sweatshirt's hood.
For less than $3, these neon pink shoe laces are sturdy enough to thread easily through your Vanellope hoodie.
Tiered Brown Skirt
In Wreck-It Ralph, Vanellope von Schweetz dons a short two-tiered dark brown skirt with sharp pleats. Given the candy theme of Sugar Rush, her skirt resembles a stack of peanut butter cup wrappers. Dark brown skirts with this particular design are difficult to come by so if authenticity is the cheese to your macaroni, you may want to sew your own. If not, a tennis skirt or a brown tutu will work just as well for your Vanellope costume.
If you've already committed to a handmade Vanellope hoodie, why not take your costume to the next level with a DIY Sugar Rush skirt? First, choose a short white skirt with sharp pleats or ruffles. Dye the skirt using a dark brown fabric dye. For skirts made of cotton or other natural materials, I highly recommend Rit's liquid and powder dyes, which produce vibrant permanent colors and are easy to use.

Teal & White Striped Tights
Vanellope von Schweetz's mismatched tights are one of a kind. The right leg of her mint green tights is decorated with angled white stripes while the left leg is decorated with thick white stripes and very thin purple stripes. Until Disney releases a pair of official Vanellope tights, you'll need to break out your DIY skills to achieve this look without sacrificing the authenticity of your Wreck-It Ralph costume.
These comfortable microfiber tights come in a variety of colors. I recommend the brand's scout green, which is a near-perfect match for Vanellope's minty green tights.
First and foremost, you need tights. A variety of teal and mint green tights are available for purchase on Amazon, but if you've already decided to dye your Vanellope von Schweetz hoodie, why not toss a pair of opaque white tights into the pot, too? I personally recommend using Rit's teal and green apple dyes, which, when combined, create a bright, minty shade of green that closely resembles Vanellope's signature color.
Once you have your tights, sew or hot glue white and purple ribbon to the legs to recreate Vanellope's stripes. Or, if a needle and thread (or hot glue gun) isn't your DIY weapon of choice, opt to paint your mismatched stripes using opaque white and purple fabric paint. I'm a fan of Jacquard's super opaque white textile paint, which covers most colors with just one coat.
Vanellope Von Schweetz Hair & Makeup
Vanellope's candy-studded hair is, by far, the most recognizable part of her costume. Sugar Rush's resident glitch wears her shiny black hair in a high ponytail with long side bangs parted in the middle of her forehead.
This highly rated Vanellope wig does not come with bangs but can easily be cut and styled to replicate the cute Sugar Rush racer's look.
When it comes to wigs, you really do get what you pay for. If you can afford to shell out the extra bucks for a quality wig, I highly recommend doing so -- especially since you'll most likely be styling this one yourself.
Conceal your natural hair color with this opaque black wig cap. Wig caps make it easy to tuck away your locks and securely attach your wig.
Cheap wigs are meant to be worn as they come and trying to pull those stringy synthetic locks into a ponytail may leave you looking disheveled.
Clip-on bangs can transform you into Vanellope.
If you're able to hunt down a reasonably priced, pre-styled black ponytail wig with bangs, buy it! There's a good chance you won't come across another.
This thick, curly clip-on ponytail extension will give your natural hair Vanellope-worthy shine, length and bounce.
