When Harry Met Sally
Ok so I know I go on a lot about Steve Martin and how I feel he is absolute comic genius and the epitome of all things funny, but I do have to tip my ball cap to Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner and their brilliant cast of characters in When Harry Met Sally, because this movie also takes a slice of that pie.
For me the late Ephron's films were a huge part of my 80's and 90's viewing; they introduced me to Meg Ryan in all her blond curly charm, as well as the late great Bruno Kirby. More than just a film for my age cohort, the character's growing pains reflected our own, and I can assure you there were few of us in my group that could not recite nearly every line of the film. And like my favourite books, this was one film that I have given away so often, I rarely have/had a copy for myself.
In the theatre we all shouted with surprise to see Carrie Fisher outside of her Star Wars role and cried we were laughing so hard at the now famous 'orgasm scene'.
When Harry Met Sally harkens back to a time not that long ago, when we still believed in romance and happy endings. I still watch this film and am amazed that every scene is a work of art. I never get tired of it, and it is my go-to comfort film when I am sick, or sad, or tired or just want to hang out with some familiar friends. If you haven't seen it - please do.
I think Nora Ephron was one of the most brilliant romantic comedy writers of our modern times. She will be missed.
The big scene.
