Where Can I Find Royalty Free Music and Sound Effects?

Updated on October 26, 2014

Where Can I Get Some Royalty Free Music & Sound Effects?

Do you need some royalty free music or sound effects for a project you're working on? And you don't know where to get some? With all the mess of unhelpful pages you've spent hours searching through, only to find junk! Here's a page full of helpful links to the sites that offer free or paid music &/or sound effects.

Look no further! Here's a list of websites that offer what you're looking for. Most of the sites I've listed here, are ones that I use, especially the free ones. Some of the websites I've listed here are paid, and some are free! So whether you're looking to buy some music or to just use some music with empty pockets & a smile, check these helpful suggestions out........

Free Vs. Paid

Knowing The Limitations of Licensing!

There are two different types of royalty free music & sound effects available out there.

Out there, being that giant spider web that covers the face of this planet....In the figurative, technological, sense of course. Websites, that you have to pay to use their music & sound effects, & sites that you don't. But some of the sites that are free have limitations. Limitations like not using them without crediting the author/website. Some websites won't allow you to use their music for anything commercial, only for personal use.

So be sure and check every website you end up using. Seeing as how they can change their Policy/T.O.S.(Terms Of Service) in regards to licensing, at anytime they see fit. I doubt they could throw the book at you, if you downloaded & used their music or sound effects during the time they were free of charge. Since they were obtained & used during the time in which they were free & without the new limitations set forth. They should be able to be kept on that piece of work, you created, that has been sitting online for quite some time. That's like a restaurant saying a meal is free and then after you eat it they changed their minds & want it back(reverse peristalsis) plus the price of what it costs to make it.

Here's some more information about royalty free music: Royalty Free Music Info

Next up are some lists of websites that offer, paid & free, royalty music & sound effects.......

The Best Royalty Free Music & Sound Effects

The Best 4 Free! Royalty Free Music & Sound Effects Websites!

I use these 4 websites, listed below, for all projects I've had and will have. They've got some great free music & sound effects. Each site has their own terms of service info, about how to use & credit the music maker/website. You cannot directly link to any of their songs, only the website itself, in case you ever point someone there. Also, you cannot resell any of their works or pass them off as your own. Also, I've included, under 3 of the websites, the links for their T.O.S Licensing Information(only 3 of them because the other 1 has the info on their first home page). It would also be wise to peruse the websites for anything F.A.Q. or information related, so that you don't step on any toes in regards to licensing and free use.

#1. SoundJay has a great listing of royalty free music & sound effects. They have their files broken into different categories for ease of use. You can save the files as wav's or mp3's. I find, that with my Arcsoft Showbiz DVD 2 video editor program, wav's work best for less distortion or messing up when putting together movies with audio files added.

SoundJay's Terms Of Use:

SoundJay's Terms of Use: SoundJay's terms of use simply say that you can use any of their audio files & that you don't have to credit or link back to their website. But they do however say it would be nice if you did, but you're not obligated to. Make sure you read this page for all the info about your usage and etc.

#2. PacDV has royalty free music & sound effects available. PacDV makes no mention of crediting them when you use their files. I however, do credit them. Also, they, like all 3 of these websites...state that you cannot direct link to their exact song files, only to their website url in general. PacDV's terms of usage are right on that first page. They also have their audio files broken into categories, very helpful.

#3. Incompetech is another great resource for royalty free music. However, they don't have sound effects in their arsenal. The website is run by a musical genius named Kevin MacLeod. There are many genres of music split into their respective categories. It's a great resource for royalty free music. He adds & updates new music often. So, be rest assured he will most likely have something you're looking for.

Incompetech's Terms Of Use: You'll want to read this page for knowing how to credit Mr. MacLeod and you should probably donate some money to him so he can eat. Musicians need to eat too. It would be nice if you gave him some money as a way of saying thanks, for getting to use his music freely. One last thing to mention is that he does freelance music making for people who need specific types of music and scoring. Check around his webpage to find the part where you can hire him, to make you a piece of music.

#4. has a nice selection of royalty free music & sound effects. They have their files broken into different categories for ease of use. The files are generally available in mp3 form. Now check out their copyright info.....'s Terms Of Use:'s Copyright Information states that you can only use their music/soundfx if you credit them every time. You can use them for commercial and non-commercial. Now you have to be careful! because the site allows people to upload their own music/soundfx that they've made and not all music & sound fx are free the way some others are. Every song or sound effect you come across, you have to check underneath or near it for copyright info. So just be careful about that.

*With Halloween quickly approaching, these sites should be able to help you with any sound effects, clips, bites or background music you might need for anything Halloween related - whether it's for a haunted house you're putting together or a video/music project you're working on.

Terms & Conditions Follow-Up

Plus Another Great Website For Finding Sound Effects......

So just make sure you read all the info for any website you use. You don't want to get caught with your pants down when using an audio file you probably shouldn't be using or if you use it incorrectly! Especially if you plan on using any music or sound effects for a commercialized product such as a monetized youtube video. Play it safe, if you can't find the owner of the audio file, or a page directing you to info saying that it's copyrighted and it's not free to use or vice versa, then don't use it!

Here's another great website for finding sounds. The only problem with this one is that the sounds might not be free! So you'll have to check and see. Go to the website that each audio file shows and check. Play it safe, if you can't find the owner of the audio file, or a page directing you to info saying that it's copyrighted and not free to use, then don't use it!

You should be able to find some really good sound files on that site as well as the other sites I listed earlier. Halloween is almost here and you probably want some creepy sounds for a haunted house or Halloween project you're working on.

@PaulWinter: Great comment! That looks like a very promising website for music. I can remember back around 2002 when used to be free and showcased new music & artists, but like a lot of websites that are free they end up changing their tune and become a paid site only. Thanks for giving a good idea! I'll eventually give it a full check and probably post it here with the specifics.

It's pretty new to me, working with the picts in this way. Thanks for the resource! B : )

@anonymous: That's a pretty nice site! Some of the songs are highly priced but they're really good quality. Definitely a high end music production website. Obviously there are low priced ones too so it works both ways! I wish you guys the best & all the success you can handle! @kerbev: Same thing with me, I use music for my videos as well. Thought I'd help some people out by giving them some ideas on websites that offer royalty free music & sound effects. Eventually I'll update the page with some more websites. There were a few more that are free free but they're websites are down for maintenance eventually......

Great topic. I would recommend keeping everything on the lens related to the topic, the SEO books aren't needed here. Maybe you could make another lens for those.
