Zumba dvds to buy - which one? Advice From A Zumba Instructor!

Updated on November 30, 2014

A Review Of The Zumba dvd Sets

I teach Zumba classes and I LOVE it! I know that not everyone can make it to a class so I have written this review to help you choose a dvd to workout at home. Here are my thoughts.

Perhaps you are considering buying a Zumba dvd set? and you want to know what they are like? Which one is the best one? Will they really help you to shape up? Are they fun? And most importantly of all, are they worth the money?

This article will answer these questions and give you some inside info to help you get the best workout.

Zumba Fitness Total Body Transformation

This set contains 4 DVDs with 6 workouts, including a basic workout, a cardio based workout, a toning workout, an abs workout (targeting your tummy) and an express workout (in case you are short on time). The moves and dancesteps are broken down for you so it's easy to learn, making it ideal for someone who is new to Zumba, and either can't get to classes, or would like to learn some steps before heading to a class. It can also help you improve your dancing and really 'get' the steps if you already attend a class but you would like to 'up' your game. This set offers different levels so you can start in 'easy' and the move up to 'medium' and 'hard' when you are ready.

The toning sticks are included to help you shape up your arms, although they are very light so you may want to consider using heavier handweights as you get fitter!

This set is an investment and it's really worth the money if you want to get into Zumba. The music is really motivating and it's lots of fun!

This is a good option for beginners as an introduction to Zumba.

Exhilarate dvd Set

This set has 4 DVDs and 1 bonus DVD and also includes to toning sticks for shaping your arms. It includes all the main Zumba dance rhythms - merengue, salsa, reggaeton, calypso, cumbia, hip-hop, and belly dance. You can choose to have verbal cueing (ie: a voice telling you what to do while you dance) or just the music and picture alone.

As with the Zumba Total Body Transformation set the steps are broken down and the routines are easy to follow.

Some people report preferring the toning disc in the Body Transformation set to the one in this set, however all the workouts in this set are also fun and effective and is offered in a logical progression of workouts to help you learn and improve. This set also includes an 'express' workout for when you are pressed for time.

The Exhilarate set has an express option for if you are in a hurry.

Zumba Gold dvd Set - Zumba for the older adult

This set is perfect for older adults and people who are less able bodied. It's a lower intensity workout but still uses the trademark Zumba Latin music and is still just as fun! As with the other major sets it provides a step by step progression to learn the steps and build up your fitness gradually. Older adults report really this DVD set.

This set is for older adults or those who need a slightly slower pace.

Remember you will need a room with floorspace to move around as you are dancing. It's also important to wear the correct footwear, and ladies, very important for us to wear a supportive exercise bra to prevent sagging in the future!

DVDs At Home or Zumba Class - That Is The Question

Do you prefer to attend fitness classes, or workout in the privacy of your own home?

See results

I have written this paragraph to help you decide whether it is better for you to do a dvd workout at home or to attend a Zumba class. So which is better?

Well it depends on you and what you need. A class is always extra fun because you will get the atmosphere created when a bunch of people get together and dance. However the DVDs can be GREAT to get you started, or if for some reason you cannot get to a Zumba class. They are ideal newbies who feel a bit less confident, and are not quite ready to attend a class yet, Learning the steps and perhaps even shedding a few pounds can do wonder for your confidence until you feel ready to take the plunge.

Zumba DVDs are also perfect for those who already attend classes and just want to hone their steps, improve their dancing and do some extra Zumba!

Other Zumba dvds to Buy

If you are looking for a cheaper option you can buy a single disc. However beware because the feedback for these DVDs isn't as good. The Zumba Beginners disc is very short (about 30 mins) and only goes through the basic steps, it doesn't give you routines.

The Zumba Advanced Workout disc is slightly better and can provide a good workout, ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT FOR NEWBIES WHO HAVE NEVER DONE ZUMBA BEFORE. If this is you get something else as you will probably feel lost with this DVD.

The Zumba Weight Loss programme is actually a book, with an accompanying DVD. It's useful and gives diet tips, although the disc itself just covers the basic steps and gives about 60 mins worth of workout music. It's probably a better option than buying the Zumba Beginners DVD.

Zumba Buns Thighs and Abs IS NOT ACTUALLY ZUMBA DANCING AT ALL! It is just a collection of exercises to target those problem areas.

Helpful Extras

If you are dancing at home you may well have carpet on the floor, in which case it is a good idea to get the Zumba Carpet Dancer sneakers. These can help prevent injuries to the knees which could be caused by twisting movements on carpet, wearing ordinary trainers (where the grip catches and sticks to the carpet).

You will also find CDs of the most popular Zumba music, toning sticks to use in your hands when you are working out for extra toned arms, a bellydance belt for jangling when you practice your shimmy, and a Bellydance DVD. Bellydance is the perfect accompaniment to Zumba and will help teach you to move your hips and use your belly muscles in the right way to get the best benefits from you Zumba workout.

My wife does Zumba using my son's Wii. It's more convenient for her than heading out for a class I think.
