Pick your favorite Sleuth, Crime Fighter and Amateur Detective

Do you like to flex your little grey cells?

Do you think the answer is Elementary, my Dear Watson?

Who do you think is the best fictional Detective of all time?

You can pick any fictional character from TV, Film or Novel in our fun Poll.

Cast Your Vote - and Help Solve the Mystery!

Watching the Detectives
Watching the Detectives

This poll has been created to help us decide which iOS app we should make next. We have made several Interactive Episode Guides to help people keep track of their favorite shows, books and films.

With this information you could influence the next app we make and if you leave a comment, 5 lucky Squidooers will get the chance to try out the new app first.

If you select Other from the list, please leave a comment giving the name of your preferred fictional Detective and why? Even if you have made a selection from the list, please join the debate and let us know why.

We look forward to seeing the results.

Thanks for your help and Have fun!

Who is your favorite fictional Detective?

See results

Here's a selection of my personal favorite detectives.

Magnum PI: The Complete Series, Seasons 1-8
Magnum PI: The Complete Series, Seasons 1-8

Magnum was funny and he had that great mustache too. He always seemed to land on his feet and smooth talk himself of any situation.

Who will come out on top?

Don't forget to come back and check who is winning.

I'm looking forward to the results

Thanks for voting

And the Winner is...

Top Sleuth voted by you

So the clear winner is everyone's favorite Detective super sleuth SHERLOCK HOLMES. I'm not surprised, are you? The original detective that set the bar for all other detectives to reach and he's also been around a very long time.

As you read the Conan-Doyle stories, watch the TV show or watch the movies you can't help but feel in awe at this great man and his computer like logical brain.

However, lets just remind ourselves that Mr Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective but inspires us to use our brain and tap into its power. We may not have super-brain to out-wit those fiendishly clever misfits and tyrants that Sherlock encounters but it should inspire us to at least use our brain for good and unlock the power of our mind if we allow it.

Thank you so much for voting and if you disagree with the outcome, then please continue to vote on who you think should be the greatest detective of all time. Maybe I will review this again and see if Sherlock has in fact been knocked off the top slot.

It will be interesting to review this in a few months or years.

@goldenrulecomics: Thanks. Yes Philip Marlowe is a good one. It was tricky compiling the list and I had to leave out a few.

Good idea for a lens. I might have added Philip Marlowe to the list if I were compiling it, but maybe that's too old...

@anonymous: Monk is definitely one of a kind. He has such a quirky but clever way of deducing the facts. Thanks for voting.

@Ikey4088: Looks like Sherlock Holmes is winning the polls for sure, so thanks for helping keep him at the top. Yes, the films are very good and are closer to the books I believe.

I voted for Sherlock Holmes, but I like the modern day version portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.

I confess to never having read any of AC Doyle's Holmes books. But I've been a big fan of the Holmes movies. When I think Holmes, I think Basil Rathbone...and Nigel Bruce as Watson. In your poll, I was torn between Holmes and Peter Falk's Columbo...and finally opted for the latter. Your inclusion of Clouseau made the choice even harder!

Love your lens but I guess I'm more TV detectives and would vote for Magnum or Jessica Fletcher on Murder She Wrote.

Sherlock Holmes was my childhood hero. The BBC Series was on air when I was a teenager. Hercule Poirot is cuter and Perry Mason is kind of cool too. I dont know many of the names on the list. Have to investigate them.

@Nightcat: Thanks for sharing, I've never heard of Skulduggery, I'll be sure to check it out. The Dresden Files was interesting but they only did one season and it wasn't renewed which was a shame. Thanks for voting.

Really difficult choice, but liking Skulduggery right now. He is sort of like Batman, where he takes on a young charge, but he is darker than most detectives, and magical. Can't beat magical skeleton detectives, you really can't. I love all the others as well of course, but I'm not spending extra to import their books right now either.
