Why The Dark Knight Is The Best Of The Movie Trilogy

The Joker and The Caped Crusader Meet Again

Having watched all 3 of the Dark Knight trilogy movies several times, I have come to the conclusion that the 2nd movie of the three is my pick for best. What makes me say that?

It comes down to the villain.

As with Batman himself, the villains in all three movies are tortured souls in some way or another. While Harvey Dent could invoke a bit of sympathy at times due to circumstances beyond his control, and Bane proves to be a formidable opponent in hand to hand combat, my vote for best/worst villain has to go to The Joker.

Batman and The Joker Share a Long History

From Cesar Romero in the 1960s to Jack Nicholson in the 80's, the master criminal known as The Joker has been a nemesis of Batman's since his introduction in the 1940 comic book Batman #1. However, the portrayal of the role by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight has to go down as one of his best movie roles, and my favorite actor to cover the role.

As for the Bane character, well I am on the fence. I see where this can tie up some loose ends from the first movie and the League of Shadows storyline, but to be honest, I found the voice to be a bit on the annoying side. Give me The Penguin or The Riddler instead, please.

Making it a tough call on the best of the three movies was the revival if the anti-hero Catwoman, and the great job done by Anne Hathaway in covering the role.

Let me know which movie you liked best!

@Pierre Pine: Christopher Nolan did a great job with "Man of Steel" as well. He seems to have the whole super hero genre figured out.

@tbonestakes: Yeah, I agree. The fight scene towards the end seemed a little contrived. Back in the day Batman would have pulled something from his utility belt and put an end to the battle a lot quicker!

I agree. There wasn't much about that film I didn't like. I worked projection at a movie theater when it came out. I think I saw it 15 times in the first week.

You got it right. I rank them: (1) The Dark Knight; (2) Batman Begins; then (3) The Dark Knight Rises, but the entire Nolan trilogy is brilliant!

The last one was the least satisfying, they should have drawn on some of Bruce Timm's animated batman content. Batman would never have allowed Bain to get the best of him, even in the short term.

Still entertaining fare though congrats on the LOD!

The entire trilogy is epic, and I think of it as a full movie, each a chapter or continuation and try not to compare them. When I bought the box set, I think i watched them all about 15 times.

@shellys-space: Nicholson did a good job with the role as well. I also liked Danny Devito's portrayal of The Penguin in one of the earlier Batman movies. He added some creepiness to the character.

Batman is my favorite Super Hero and my favorite "villain" is The Joker. Jack Nicholson was good, but Heath Ledger nailed it!

@boneworld: It's my understanding that the plan was to bring The Joker back for the final episode, but...

Totally agree! I would have liked to have seen Joker and Harley Quinn in the third movie, instead of Bane and Cat Woman. They were decent, but Heath Ledger was amazing. Such a shame.

I love Batman. Bane's activity was not captivating as the antics of the Joker though!

@Tim Bader: Although I like the job Anne Hathaway did with Catwoman, I still enjoy watching Halle Berry's portrayal. Dark Knight Rises does delve into the relationship between Batman and Catwoman, though, and I liked watching that unfold.

I was one of the ones who really liked Bane's voice and I still can't get over how a thin guy like Tom Hardy could bulk up enough to become such an imposing character!

Each time I watch Dark Knight Rises, I'm more and more impressed by Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Catwoman.

I love Heath Ledger's performance as Joker, but still love Jack Nicholson ...and also Mark Hamill in the video games!

I agree that The Dark Knight is the best of the trilogy, but sometimes find it a little too "stressful" to watch and so enjoy the other two almost as much.

I love Ledger's Joker best, but I also really liked Bane overall, though the story took too long to unpack and in the end he wasn't as sympathetic a character as I wish he'd been. The whole trilogy is awesome, though. I can watch them again and again.

Well, I haven't stood up and cheered for many, but Nicholson is the one I remember most often, even after Ledger's Joker. Now I am anticipating Batman, himself with Ben Aflleck. He has the face and head that can fit into that Batman mask. The eyes will be bright with crime fighting, but measured on his everyday dealings.

Great review, there aren't enough Superhero reviews out there at the moment.

On my recent lens I posted a poll about the possibility of reviewing this entire trilogy. It is nice to see someone else with a love for these films, all of which are excellent in their own right. Good work!

I haven't seen any of them, sorry to say. But I did enjoy reading your review and hearing your choice. Great review.
