Ever Heard of Will Sheff and Okkervil River?

Updated on April 25, 2014

Music that got my attention:

I was introduced to Will Sheff, leader and founder of the band Okkervil River, on CBS Morning News' 2nd Cup Cafe . Mr. Sheff, alone, with only a guitar, sang two songs from the band's Sept. 2013 released album, The Silver Gymnasium. Those songs were Down Down The Deep River and Black Nemo.

It is not often that I find music that grabs my attention. The last time I heard a "new" group that actually made me purchase a song was when I heard Mumford and Sons on Sirius Radio in 2008. That was well before they got coverage on pop radio. --I think lyrics were an initial reason one of their songs was not played :) --

I came of age listening to music in the late 1960's when lyrics seemed to matter more than if a song was "danceable". My friends and I used to spend hours listening to Bob Dylan trying to understand the poetry he was singing. I even remember trying to analyze the songs that the Rolling Stones were writing at that time. Even the Beatles had thought-provoking lyrics on Sergeant Pepper.

Will Sheff got my attention with the superb delivery of his music and his words. The melody was quite good--remember, he was singing alone (acoustic?) so the music and the words had to matter. Not being a real critic and not knowing how to write a proper critique, I can only share how that music I was hearing made me feel. First of all, when I heard the song, I was drawn into another room to see who was singing on the television. Secondly, I used the "rewind button" on my Uverse remote to find out WHO was singing on the screen. THAT is how much Down Down The Deep River impressed me. I am over 60 and it takes a lot of effort to move around lately. No, I am not disabled! I am just NOT a MORNING person and I am slow to get moving before 10AM.

What grabbed my attention even more about The Silver Gymnasium when I checked it out on Amazon? It is available on vinyl! How nice.

Listen to Okkervil River

Down Down The Deep River and Black Nemo performed in the studio by the entire band. Hope they grab you as much as they grabbed this Babyboomer. I just love YouTube to explore music. If you are interested in seeing Will Sheff perform on CBS Morning 2nd Cup Cafe, click Down Down The Deep River.

Have you heard of Okkervil River? If yes, what is your favorite album?

Thanks for visiting this page. If you made a purchase, I thank you again. If you clicked the "heart" or shared this page, I am appreciative.

Today I am going to go to Facebook and share this page with my 32 year old daughter and my 36 year old son-in-law (he is a musician). They are both fans of Mumford and Sons and if they have not heard of the band I discovered today, they will be glad I shared my find with them.

I hope you like the music of Will Sheff and Okkervil River that I shared with you.
