Another Wizard of Oz Movie Remake?

The Wizard of Oz is so popular that it inspires many new movie ideas, possibly more than any other movie. However, few of the proposed new movies make it to the big screen.

This page includes two of the new movies that actually did get made: Disney's Oz: The Great and Powerful and The Witches of Oz. However, this page is really about finding out what other fans think about new Wizard of Oz movies.

I am not sure how I feel about the remake of a beloved classic movie like The Wizard of Oz and some argue rightfully that the two movies mentioned above are not REMAKES but further exploration of the world of Oz. Personally, I think that they should leave good enough alone unless they make a solid remake or a really good add-on story in the best possible fashion and by that I mean with a strong story line, excellent cast and full budget.

On this page, YOU will have the opportunity to have your say. Are you excited or devastated about the news of a Wizard of Oz movie remake?

Remaking the Classics - Should Hollywood STOP remaking our favorite old movies?

Remaking the Classics is a lively panel discussion of whether or not movies like Ben Hur, Casablanca, Citizen Kane and yes, the Wizard of Oz should be remade. Is it okay to remake old films? When is it okay?

Its all good I guess, may as well have something for everyone. LOL, I didn't realize the original only had a black and white intro for years.

A 3D remake would be great seeing that the effects are more advanced. But I don't think it will top or even equal the original Wizard of Oz movie.

Thank you for putting this all together, this is great! I do hope they make new stories, rather than remake the original. It's such a classic that it would be a shame. I always loved the Return to OZ and the newer Tin Man...there are many OZ stories to tell, so a spinoff would be fine with me.

new story that ties everything together without ruining classic plot points is cool.plus, witches of oz says that they're incorporating a lot more of the original frank l. baum books. i think it's neat to reintroduce the world to a new generation without bastardizing the classic movie.

I think Witches of Oz sounds interesting. I am a big fan of the book Wicked but not sure I want to see the musical. And as you know, I am not a fan of the Judy Garland film. So it is going depend on how they handle it. Lensrolling back to my Oz lenses.

@burgessvillian: You have a great point and you are right. Sometimes a movie remake introduces new generations to a movie that was previously unknown to them.

@anonymous: Bernard, you are right...it would be really sad to see such an important movie sequel be a flop. PLEASE, PLEASE let the new Wizard (Witches) of Oz movie(s) be successful!!!

@anonymous: You are right, Howard, it sounds like at least the 3D version is a new story line which will help some people but I am sure there are going to be people who do not want ANY version of the story done. What do you think?

Great lens. I wasn't aware they were doing a remake... I absolutely loved "Wicked" on Broadway so if they twist the story in the remake like they did with "Wicked", I'll be sure to see it.

I love Doc Brown!!!!!!! I will watch in a heart beat. I don't really think this movie is a remake..I think it is a story line, based on the books maybe with a twist??

Although I don't recalled anything from the movie - I know it's a classic!! But the fact that Hollywood is eager to do this prequel, I am not sure either to look forward or not! I share your concerns too - maybe, just maybe - it may flop!!

I think that remakes are a good thing because they involve stars of today that attract the younger generations. When they see the remake they are more inclined to want to see the original. Good lens.

Some stories should just be left alone the way they were originally created. :)
