Yawang / Queen of Ambition - Korean Drama 2013

Updated on September 24, 2014

Yawang (also known as Queen of Ambition) is one of the most popular Korean Drama of 2013. Adapted from the third installment of famous manhwa "Daemul" penned by Park In Kwon and a sequel of Daemul, Yawang portrays a story of love, revenge, betrayal and ambition as Joo Da Hae (Soo Ae) takes all available routes as she fought for the extreme poverty and her unfortunate life environment to achieve her ambition to be the First Lady.

Da Hae love journey (with Ha Ryu (Kwon Sang Woo)) face many obstacles, mainly due to Da Hae's greed and complicated love triangle (or even rectangle) with Dae Hee's step-brother Joo Yang Hu (Lee Jae Yoon) and a chaebol Baek Do Hoon (Yun Ho). Moreover, Baek Do Kyung, Do Hoon's sister will also make Da Hee & Ha Ryu lives more difficult on top of their already challenging lives.

Sounds more dramatic than melodrama? Yes, it does, isn't it? And the teaser didn't give us much, except that Da Hee pointed a gun to her lover, Ha Ryu and I won't be surprise if he takes the bullet for her. His love is bigger than his life and he won't do anything else except making sure the woman he really loves achieve her ambition (even though his life is at stake here).

Yawang is written by Lee Hee Myung who recently gave us a hilarious time-traveling drama Rooftop Prince and is directed by Jo Young Kwang (49Days) and Park Shin Woo.

Yawang aired on SBS on 14 January 2013 and reached an average rating of 16.3%, making it one of the most successful drama of the year.

Viewers, me included, were frustrated with the hero's naiveness and the heroine's evil plans; but Soo Ae and Kwon Sang Woo's fantastic convincing performance sucked us deeper to this drama. The ending... left us speechless...

Joo Da Hae (Soo Ae) life goal is simple: to leave her poverty & unfortunate life behind her, after she's been rejected repeatedly by rich people who believe that her unlucky life will infect other people. Her mother's last words "don't ever starve" always keep echoing in her mind.

But that simple goal turns into an obsessive ambition which changes her life forever. She used to be a cheerful and lovable woman, but her greed destroys not only her life but also the lives of the people who love her, especially her husband & her lovely daughter.

Now she becomes a cold but confident woman, she will take any course, approach anyone, including Do Hoon, a son of a large company who Da Hae was painfully rejected when she worked as an intern there because his sister, Do Kyung, didn't like her brother falls in love with Da Hae.

She doesn't hesitate to go to America to study in order to get in touch with Do Hoon. She practically forgets about her family and accepts Do Hoon's marriage proposal.

Ha Ryu (Kwon Sang Woo) grew up with Da Hae as a loving big brother. He does everything for her and everything she asks him to do. He even sacrifices himself to work like a gigolo in order to pay for Da Hae's expenses in America.

He never tells Da Hae about his work, he only tells her that he works in a bar. So things get worse when Da Hae finally finds out about his real job and she's very disappointed in him.

Ha Ryu and Da Hae have a beautiful daughter together, but they never married nor registered their marriage. Every time Ha Ryu tries to register his marriage, Da Hae refused; and threatened that she will never sign the paper until Ha Ryu moves to a better job. Only few people know about their relationship.

To twist it even further, there is Ha Ryu's look-a-like, who is now a prosecutor, is given a daunting task to investigate her. And further down the track, he realized that she might be the criminal that he's trying to catch.

So what kind of ending waiting for them? Lovers who turned into enemies because of greed and ambitions.

Baek Do Hoon (Jung Yoon Ho ) comes from a wealthy family, he grows up with his much older sister & father. He always lives in luxury.

He loves playing hockey and joined in a hockey group with his university friend; although his father always asks him to stop playing and work with him instead. Because he always objects his father's proposal, his father broke the hockey team. On that same day, Do Hoon got an accident and the doctor advised him to stop playing sport otherwise he may never be able to walk in the future.

So he decides to take his father's offer and goes to America to study. He's a very serious student and his family especially his father are proud of his grades.

His life turns upside down after his fateful meeting with Da Hae in a subway when Da Hae accidentally lost her shoe there. Soon afterwards, Da Hae moved to the unit in the same apartment complex and they also met everyday at work as she worked as an intern in his father's company. Unfortunately, his sister found out about their relationship and fired her.

Before he moved to America, he invited Da Hae to come along, in which she finally did. They rekindle their relationship but he doesn't know that he will be entangled in her greed and Da Hae & Ha Ryu relationship.
