2 Things to Know about Our American Family Origins_Culture and Genes

Updated on January 28, 2013

My American Family Origins--Culture & Genes

I want to live long & prosper, for myself, my family, for America & humanity.

Realize that the kids, including my own kids are waiting in the wing impatiently to inherit America.

What do I want to pass on to my kids & my fellow Americans? Well, a good place to start is my cultural heritage passed on to me by my parents & the generations before them that is hidden in every drop of my blood, my genes. Scientific knowledge about genes is evolving rapidly. Promise of "Genes to Future Medicine' is within reach! Recently a university based medical researcher discussed a topic that relates to this topic in a prestigious magazine, "Scientific American".

The question that is important for me that this professor asked is this: "What is the best strategy for new medical research to keep people healthy as they reach the golden years?" His conclusion: Focus scientific research on how to reduce the natural process of cell damage as you get older. Interesting observation, for my twin goals!

Why is 'culture' important you ask? Well, this is what is passed on to me by my parents & their generations before. My mom is gone now; victim of a heart attack, my dad is still around. They have passed on to me an incredible inheritance of culture that includes spirituality linked to both arts & science, i.e., music, dance, food, language & wisdom. I feel it is my moral duty to pass some of these on to my kids & kids of other family members in my clan for myself, and for America's future.

Right now here at Old Virginia, we are celebrating the Celtic Heritage as the people from this culture came and settled here first and memory and wisdom of that culture Is worth celebrating, for that goal for every American, no matter what is your cultural heritage.

A easy to read fascinating book on how Watson and Crick, two upstart post docs at Cambridge Lab, UK, beat out the masters to discover the secret of the Double Helix that governs human inheritance.

Poetry is a special use of language that opens onto the real. The business of the poet is truth telling, which is why in the Celtic tradition no one could be a teacher unless he or she was a poet.

A Memorable Quote ffrom "How The Irish Saved Civilization"

by Thomas Cahill (a classic book. Anchor Book, 1995)

"Nothing that can be worth doing, can be achieved in our lifetime, therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history ; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone ; therefore we must be saved by love.

Reinhold Niebuhr (as quoted by scholar Thomas Cahill)

Love of Nature, inspired by the Sea

Celtic Definition

And it's very strange, but I think there is something very common - not only in Celtic music - but there is a factor or element in Celtic music that is similar in music that we find in Japan, the United States, Europe, and even China and other Asian countries.
