5 Fun Things To Do With Grandpa
Having Fun with Grandpa
Grandchildren are the best! When they come to visit or when you want to spend time with them you want the time spent to be memorable. Making memories with your grandchildren should be a top priority. Whether you have one grandchild or 20 grandchildren (we have 12), here are some ideas that will make visits with your grandchildren a time to remember.
Grandpa, having fun with your grandchildren doesn't have to be expensive. Sometimes it is the little things that are the most fun. It is the time spent that is the most important. Having fun with your grandchildren isn't about spending money it is about doing fun things. Don't be the grandpa that has a grandchild in the house while you sit and watch TV or do household chores. Get out there and do something with them, even if it means kicking a soccer ball around.
These ideas for having fun with grandpa are things to do in the summer. Summers are short so don't hesitate. Pick up the phone and start making memories with your grandchildren. Oh, and don't forget your camera.
Let's go fishing
Boat is optional
When is the last time you went fishing? When is the last time you took a grandchild fishing? This is one of the best ways to spend a sunny summer afternoon. At a lake with a fishing pole and a grandchild or two or three...
Part of the fun is digging up worms. You don't need a lot of expensive fishing rods and reels or even lures. Get out in your backyard. Get a coffee can, fill it with dirt and leaves and start turning over rocks, logs and leaves. You'll find all kinds of bait. If that doesn't work stop at a bait shop and pick up a 100 worms. If you don't use them all you can put them in your flower garden when you get back home.
Get out those old fishing poles and get to the nearest lake, If you have a boat, that's wonderful. If you don't that's ok. You don't need a boat to go fishing. Wade in the shoreline or fish off a dock. It really doesn't matter because when your grandchild reels in the first fish, well, that's when all the excitement starts. I hope you have your camera ready because the smile on your grandchild's face will be from ear to ear.
Tell me about your fishing trip and the fish you caught.
It really doesn't matter what you do when you spend time with your grandchildren. It is the time spent that is important. Sit and read them a book or take them for a long walk...Remember it's the time spent.
Go Fly a Kite
The more grandchildren the better!
Go fly a kite! When is the last time someone told you to fly a kite? Well, that is exactly what I am telling you to do. Go fly a kite!
What fun. Get to the dollar store and buy several paper kites. If you want to you can find some fancier kites but that will cost you a little more money. But, your local Wal-mart, K-Mart or Meijer store will have something just for you. So many styles and bright colors, you will have a hard time picking one out. I guess a lot will depend on how many you need.
A good place to fly a kite is the local high school football field. No trees or power lines and lots of open space. Maybe you even have that in your own back yard. When kite flying you do need a large open space. Lots of room to run and lots of space for your kite to soar.
Your grandchildren are going to have so much fun running, laughing and watching their kite soar in the breezes. A kite against a beautiful blue sky, what could be better?
Here is a kite idea
For the very young too!
When is the last time you were on a bike? Bike riding is great for you and it is a great family activitty. Get yourself a bike and get out there. Your grandchildren will love you for it.
Bike riding is something grandchildren of most every age can do. Even the very young can take their 3 wheelers on a bike trail.
Grandpa doesn't have a bike. Well, grandpa get out there and get one. You will love it. It doesn't have to be an expensive bike. I found mine at a garage sale for $10. It's not the most hansome bike on the trail but it works great and for riding with your grandchildren you don't need all those fancy bells and whistles.
Most cities have great bike trails that run through some very pretty countrysides with large trees and lots of wild flowers. We have a bike trail in our area that is miles and miles long and runs through several small villages or cities.
Make your bike rides fun with lots of stops and plenty of conversation. Bring along a backpack with drinks and snacks. Stop along the way to investigate those wild flowers and point out the different trees.
Make your trip safe and make sure you wear your helmets. Take along some band-aids in case you have a scrapped knee or elbow. Sun screen is a must in the summer, you don't want to bring home some sunburned grandchildren. Oh, and don't forget your camera.
Swimming, swimming and more swimming
What grandchild doesn't like the water. Whether it is a swimming pool or a lake, children of all ages love to be by the water. That makes a day swimming very special.
Here is an activity that grandchildren love and they won't want to leave, so be prepared for that. You might have to bribe them with ice cream when you get home.
I live in a state that has lots of water. Many, many lakes. We live in Michigan and we are surrounded by the Great Lakes. We are very, very blessed to have all these great bodies of water and many inland lakes. So finding a place to swim here in Michigan is very easy.
So many of our lakes have public access and wonderful beaches. Make a day of it with your grandchildren. Pack a cooler with lots of water and lemonade, some great sandwiches and lots of snacks. Swimming makes you hungry. If you are going to a swimming pool the same rules apply. Lots of water and lots of snacks. Swimming really does make you hungry.
Again, safety is a must when in or near the water. Life jackets are a must for the children that are not strong swimmers, especially if you are at a lake. If you are only taking one or two grandchildren it is easy to keep an eye on them but if you have more children make sure you have a buddy system set up so that all the children are accounted for.
Swimming means grandpa swims too. Don't worry grandpa, you'll have lots of fun once you get in. Make sure you bring some beach balls and water games so the fun never stops.
Visit the local zoo
Children love the animals
Visiting the local zoo. A perfect summer day trip.
What is it about animals that children of all ages just love. They love touching them and just watching them. The zoo is a great children's place to be because it not only involves all the animals but the children are on their feet moving around. Grandchildren do not like to sit still and remain quiet. At the zoo you will hear lots of screaming, loud talking and laughing.
Grandpa, your grandchildren will adore you for taking them to one of their favorite places. It is another perfect time for lots of conversation about all the wonderful creatures we have here on Earth. Some of the zoo's have sections where the children can get into a penned area and pet some of the farm animals as well as feed some of the animals by hand. Wonderful, wonderful experiences.
I think some of the grandpa's as well as the grandma's will enjoy this trip too. Again....don't forget your camera. Where comfortable clothes and shoes because you will be walking and then some more walking.
