The Mother Daughter Bond

There are many different kinds of parental relationships.

Some children are the spitting image of their parents and their parents before them but, sometimes children’s personalities and interests are the complete opposite of their parents.

Although each relationship is individual, there is one universal truth. Mothers and daughters have a physical and emotional connection that can’t be denied.

Mothers know firsthand what it’s like to be a little girl, the struggles of being a teenage girl, and the excitement and challenges of venturing out on their own.

Here are 50 things every mother should teach her daughter in an effort to help ease some of the confusing and scary parts of the child to adult transition and beyond.

Advice On Self:

  1. Envy is a natural but wasted emotion unless it makes you inspired or motivated
  2. Don’t judge others, it only reflects on you
  3. Give to those truly in need. It helps them and makes you a better person
  4. Take pride in your appearance
  5. Smile often, it will elevate your mood as well as others
  6. Recognize and own your mood swings, they are not other people’s burden to bear
  7. Organize your thoughts and feelings before speaking. Lashing out only makes you feel better in the moment
  8. Don’t get caught up in the drama
  9. Be the kind of person you admire
  10. Don’t let others image of you be your guide
  11. Respect your body, it’s the only one you will ever get
  12. Allow yourself to have your own dreams and chase them
  13. Make it a priority to spend time alone
  14. Set your own boundaries and stick to them
  15. Be compassionate without being gullible
  16. Never get too busy to be silly once in a while
  17. Food is fuel, not love or comfort
  18. Saying hurtful, nasty things to people doesn’t make you honest, it makes you mean
  19. Expand your vocabulary so you can express yourself effectively. Curse words don’t make people take you seriously, they just make you sound less intelligent
  20. Let your inner strength guide you forward every day. Fear should not guide your decisions
  21. Keep a personal journal
  22. Don’t put anything on the internet that you wouldn’t want your future employer or children to see
  23. Don’t be afraid of responsibility but only accept what you can effectively handle
  24. Happiness is a choice
  25. Don’t give away what you cannot afford to lose, emotionally, physically or financially
  26. Be a good listener
  27. Find your passion and let it fuel you
  28. Write down three things you like about yourself
  29. Being feminine doesn’t make you weak
  30. Always say please and thank you
  31. Use the terms Ma’am and Sir to respected elders and strangers alike
  32. Have faith in something or someone, keep your heart open

Advice on Finances:

33. Make your own money

34. Live within your means

35. Credit is for emergencies only and shopping is never an emergency

36. If you love it, need it, or really want it, SAVE for it

37. Never co-sign for another person’s debt or obligation

Advice On Employment:

38. If you’re not 10 minutes early, you are late

39. Always give an employer 2 weeks’ notice when you decide to quit

40. Always do the job you agreed to do when you were hired

Goofing off at work is the same as stealing

41. When at work, leave personal problems and bad moods at the door. You can pick them up after you’re done for the day

Advice On Relationships:

42. Chose a spouse based on how they make you feel about yourself, not what they do for you

43. Stand up for yourself, learn to effectively communicate your needs and desires

44. Always remember, you are in control of how others treat you

45. Having children should be a conscious choice

46. Ask yourself three questions before you decide to get pregnant:

Can I raise my child? Can I support my child? Am I willing to have my whole life change?

47. Respect and accept the fact that others are different

48. Don’t expect others to change who they are and then condemn them when you are disappointed

49. Allow people to support and encourage you, not carry you

50. Wait for your soul mate, your patience will be rewarded!

This is a wonderful hub! It is never too late for any of us to read your list and see some things we can can still improve on. I have tried to instill many of these things in our daughter, and I think I have done a fairly good job. She is grown and has a family of her own, but I am still sending this link to her, as I said there are things on your list that we an all improve on. Voting this up and awesome! You did a great job! :)

(Notice the spelling in your title...) :)

Very thoughtful and loving advices... mothers really know best. Many (not all) of these tips would work on sons as well.

(I also notice the spelling in the title too... but the URL otherwise says it correctly *wink* :) )

Idigwebsites, these lessons definitely apply to sons as well and I will do my best to pass them along to mine. :)

Thank you for mentioning the title error! It's like having something stuck in your teeth, you would figure it out eventually but it's so much better when someone is nice enough to tell you! :)

OMG. If only I had learned these things from my mom. Our relationship has been dysfunctional. We love each other but have completely different personalities. She was not very nurturing and did not give advice like this. I see other adult daughters and how they are best friends with their mothers because their mothers taught them these values. I am making the conscious choice not to have children and am still trying to make my self the best I can be. That is very hard work. Thank you for the advice.

Roxanne Lewis 4 years ago from Washington

kikibruce, I understand! My mother sounds a lot like yours. They say people spend a good portion of their adult life getting over their childhood. True? Maybe. I choose to believe that one of the benefits of getting older is that we get to choose how we live and how we treat ourselves, despite the messages we received as children. What kind of people are we? We are whatever we decide to be! I have no doubt you are a wonderful and insightful person. I'm glad to know you! :)

Pinkchic18, thanks for the kind words. This list was inspired by the fear I had for my own girls and my desire to see them achieve all their hopes and dreams instead of a lifetime of sabotaging themselves and never really understanding why life wasn't turning out like they wanted. To be honest, I wish I had this list 20+ years ago. ;)
