7 Tips on Choosing the Right School for Your Child

Updated on April 13, 2015

Is your child ready to go to school? Choosing a school is a very important part of your child’s life because that is where she will be spending much of her formative years. So it is vital that you spend much effort and time in selecting the best school for your little one.

To help you with this task, I’ve listed some of the factors that you should include in making your selection.

1. Do they have a good teacher to kids ratio?

Preferably the fewer the children assigned to one teacher the better she can focus on the kids. That’s because it is very hard for one teacher to keep track of the learning of the children if she has dozens of them under her wing. While there is no magic number here, still the fewer the better policy applies.

2. Does the school have security systems in place?

With all the crimes that we see in the news taking place in schools, it is imperative that school administrators do all that they can to make sure their students are always safe while they’re within the school premises. Some of the things the administrators can do are: install CCTV cameras, metal detectors, and electronic access systems.

3. Is the curriculum appropriate to your child’s interests?

You should check if the curriculum has a very strong emphasis on the areas of interest of your child. This may be music, sports, or mathematics. This is important to help nurture the talents of your child.

4. Does the school offer language courses?

With the world getting smaller, you will give your child an advantage in the future if she knows another language. There are schools that offer secondary language education on French, Mandarin, Spanish, or any of the other popular languages today.

5. Are there sufficient facilities?

Education is not just within the four walls of the classroom. Check if the school has a gym, laboratory, play area, and of course its own library. With the help of these facilities, your child will be able to hone her talents and expand her interests.

6. Is the school clean?

Of course you wouldn’t want your kid to attend a dirty school but if you’re going to check the cleanliness of the facilities, don’t just focus on the front yard and the classrooms. You should also check the rest of the premises particularly the toilets. You should also ask how many janitorial staff are working to keep the school clean.

7. Are other parents satisfied with the school?

You should go and find parents who have children attending that school and interview them. Ask them their experience with the kind of education being taught in that school. Are their children happy? Do they think the kids are learning well? By doing this you will get a clearer picture if that school is the right one for your child.

Don’t rush it.

Take your time in choosing the school for your kid. It is a great investment on the future of your child and that is why it is something that shouldn’t be done without much thought and research.
