Innocence Lost

This is a story about a young man named Lee.

Lee’s mother was one of eight kids that grew up in a two bedroom shack in rural Kansas. His mother, Rose got pregnant with Lee from a man who was 20 years older than her. Needless to say, Lee’s father never wanted anything to do with him. Lee’s real father left him completely at the age oftwo. Lee was not aware of this because of how young he was. Lee grew up with another man who he believed was his father. His mother married a man named Richard when Lee was two years old. As far as Lee knew, Richard was his father. Lee grew up in his tender years thinking that the way his “Dad” treated him was…..the way it was suppose to be.

Lee’s Dad was very physical with Lee. He used to pick him up and throw him against walls. This was actually better than the way the Lee’s Dad would talk to him, for the words hurt him the most. Lee had two little brothers and a little sister. He never saw his father showing his brothers and sister the type of love that he received. The way Richard dealt with his brothers and sisters was very “strange.” Lee heard his father telling them that he loved them, and was always spending time with them? Lee could not understand this? Inside he felt left out, or like he was missing something.

Lee’s Dad was also very giving to Lee’s mother. For example some nights after his Dad had been drinking the “daddy drinks” He would see his Dad giving his mother the “type” of love that his Dad gave him. Lee would think to himself…. “Daddy loves Mommy the same way he does me?” However, Lee’s Dad also was very nice around New Years! At the age of 4 his Daddy let him have a “daddy drink.” This made Lee feel very good, like His Daddy really cared for him.

Christmas Miracle?

When Lee was older and went to school, He started to notice the way other Daddy’s played and talked to their kids? It was strange…Something inside of Lee longed for that type of “Daddy.” As Lee got older and Christmas approached he made his list of toys. The ONLY thing he put was one a Dirt Duster bike. He wanted that Dirt Duster SOOOO BAD He COULD TASTE IT! When he showed his father his Christmas list; He said “You know boy…..Santa only gives presents to Good little boys and girls!” This made Lee very sad, for his father made sure he knew he was bad.

On Christmas morning of Lee’s 8th birthday He grudgingly went downstairs with his brothers and sisters. When he came to the tree he looked ….and he couldn’t believe it SANTA had got him a Dirt Duster …..A Big Brand New Red BIKE! He had never had anything BRAND NEW before. He was so excited that he begged his Daddy to let him go and ride it. His Daddy said they would have to wait until everyone had opened their presents. Just then Lee’s Dad did the strangest thing. He sat on the couch and invited Lee over to him. He picked him up and set Lee beside him and put his arm around him. Lee had never felt this before. The smell of his dad and the comfort of his big harry arms, made Lee forget all about the brand new bike. He wanted that to last forever……..it didn’t.

After Christmas morning was over. Lee’s Dad took the Bike outside and said “Okay boy here you go!” Lee excitedly jumped on the bike and started pedaling out of the yard. The rush and thrill of the wind and the feelings of the morning drowned out a shout from his father. Lee speed off. The wind and the thrill of being free had overtaken his entire body. He road down to the old lumber yard and turned around waving to his friends and pedaled as fast as he could to his driveway, He closed his eyes and let the wind and the heat of the sun overtake him and …at that moment he was happy.

When he pulled in to the drive he looked up and saw his dad…. Immediately Lee’s happiness left him. All that was left was pure terror. He pulled up to the garage and his father said “GET OFF THE BIKE!” Petrified with fear, Lee couldn’t move. His father screamed “GET OFF THE BIKE! I TOLD YOU TO ONLY GO A BLOCK!” Lee felt tears streaming down his face soaking his little shaking body. In one quick move Lee’s Dad grabbed him off the Bike and threw him violently into the Garage, Lee’s Dad was screaming all sorts of things but Lee was so used to escaping through his fear he could not make out anything. The door of the garage slammed shut and all that was left in the garage was Lee, tears, dirt, and darkness........

No child should have to grow up at the mercy of a monster dad. Children are so innocent and filled with potential. Sad comes short of expressing the emotions this first chapter story holds.

      Writing is good and captivating!
