A Review of The Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump, pros and cons

Updated on October 6, 2012

Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump

For breast feeding moms, the Ameda Purely Yours is the best electric breast pump on the market for the price. The Ameda breast pump is also great if you are planning on exclusively pumping breast milk. This article will walk you through the pros and cons of the Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump and tell you where to find the best deals on breast pumps.

Pros to the Ameda Breast Pump:

HygieniKit Milk Collection System: For most breast pumps with tubing, moisture can build up in the tubing potentially contaminating expressed milk with bacteria, mold and viruses. Fortunately, Ameda breast pumps have a closed system. During pumping, the diaphragm keeps the air from your pump from coming in contact with your milk. The benefits are two-fold. First cleaning the pump parts is much easier because you don’t have to wash the narrow tubing. Second, because there is no milk in the tubing, you don't have to worry about bacteria, mold or viruses in hard-to-clean tubing. This is great benefit over other pumps on the market, such as the Medela Pump in Style, which does not utilize a closed system. There are a lot of other benefits in the Ameda Purely Yours vs the Medela Pump In Style.

Suction and Cycle functions: With separate suction and speed dials, the Purely Yours Ultra provides 32 different options to find the most comfortable and efficient pump setting for you. One option is to start with the dials on the highest speed to encourage letdown and on the highest comfortable suction. After let-down, then set the speed lower. Being able to adjust the suction and speed separately that makes for a more comfortable pumping experience

What could be improved:

Valves: The white valves, though inexpensive, can tear easily. When this happens, the pump has basically no suction. This means they must be handled carefully, especially when washing. When I started using this pump again for my second child, I purchased an extra set of valves to have on hand. I would not let this dissuade you from purchasing an Ameda breast pump.

Cast your vote for Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump

My personal experience:

I pumped with the Ameda Purely Yours breast pump for over 39 months (with two children). As a mom who also works full-time outside of the home, I've spent a lot of time pumping and know how important it is to have an efficient pump.

I was able to keep my supply up, pump enough milk to not supplement with formula for either child, and nurse for a combined 39 months. Based on my experience, I highly recommend this Ameda breast pump to breastfeeding mothers.

Final Results

Conclusion: If you are looking for a high-quality double electric you won't be disappointed with the Ameda Purely Yours. It's quick, hygienic and easy to clean.
