Must Have Books for Your Baby's Nursery

Updated on October 3, 2019

As a first time Mama, I love sharing my experiences in motherhood with others.

I've been reading to my daughter since the day she was born. Of course, when she was a newborn, I could read her anything. I think she was the youngest person to complete the Harry Potter series! More accurately, I could read her any book from her collection and she just took in the images, cooed along and stayed perfectly still. Then, at about six months, she became a hazard to have around books. As soon as I would take a book out to read, it would either be crinkled, ripped or chewed on. To this day, our 'paper books' remain tucked away. All of the books I'm going to discuss here are board books!

Over the past year, my daughter and I have come to favor some books more than others. Today, those are the books I'd like to focus on. These are my must-haves or my favorite books in my daughter's nursery.

Whenever possible, I do like to rotate her book collection - this not only ensures that she has a variety, but it helps make sure I get some variety when I'm reading to her. Considering I have all of the books that made this list memorized, I don't think any of these have been rotated out.

So, without further adieu, I give you, my must-have books for babies and toddlers.

The Very Cranky Bear

Besides starting Harry Potter, this was the first book I ever read to my daughter. We were still in the hospital when someone sent it as a gift, so when the nurses woke her up and she was screaming bloody murder, we were both introduced to Bear and his friends in the Jingle Jangle Jungle.

While it holds a special place in my heart as being the first story we read, today it is better known in our house as the book that taught her how to say "roar". This was also the first book that she learned by name and the first item she retrieved by name upon request.

Now, there are other books based on Bear and his friends in the Jingle Jangle Jungle. We've tried introducing those to our daughter and she has shown zero interest but personally, I think the whole collection is worth reading to your little ones.

Pig the Pug

My daughter got this book for Christmas and it quickly became a favorite.

I feel like I'm going to say this about several books on this list, but I really like the illustrations in this book and the overall flow.

As much as I love the story and love reading this book to her, now that she is learning words, or, more specifically, learning the names of animals, I have one complaint. Why does the pug's name have to be pig? My daughter knows that pigs say 'oink' and that dogs say 'woof', but she is really confused as to why I keep calling this funny looking creature 'Pig' but telling her 'the dog says woof'.

The Pout-Pout Fish

Our family was introduced to The Pout-Pout Fish completely by chance while roaming the bookstore. This book caught my daughter's eye and she was just drawn to it. She sat for a good fifteen minutes or more looking at the pictures and babbling away. Not surprisingly, it came home with us.

There's a lot of text per page compared to some other board books for babies and toddlers. Initially, I found my daughter would get restless while I read this to her and she would just try to turn the page and skip ahead. Now that we know the book, she does much better.

The Going to Bed Book

If you're looking for books for your baby or toddler, you can't go wrong with Sandra Boynton's books.

The Going to Bed Book is short and sweet and in my opinion, it is the perfect addition to any bedtime routine.

When we're not reading this before bed, we use the illustrations to teach our daughter the names of animals or actions. We point out the moon, we talk about how it gets dark at bedtime, etc.

That's Not My Unicorn

Usborne has several touchy-feely books. Our favourite is That's Not My Unicorn.

My daughter loves to feel all the textures and now that she's getting a little older, we have fun trying to find the Usborne mouse on each page.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

This book is a classic that I remember well from my childhood.

I absolutely love the illustrations.

This book is great to read or sing as is, but it's also a fun way to learn colors as well as animal names and sounds.

I Love You to the Moon and Back

This is such a sweet book that my daughter loves at bedtime.

My only complaint about this book is that they never actually say "I love you to the moon and back", instead they say "I love you to the moon and stars my precious little one."

Peek-a Who

My grandmother purchased this book for my daughter when she was a few months old. There's not much to it, but it's cute and it's fun. I know it held my daughter's attention as a small baby and to this day, she still loves it.

Touch and Feel Farm

Another touch and feel book that we love is Touch and Feel Farm. It's a great way to learn the names of some popular farm animals and the sounds they make.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is another timeless classic that brings me back to my childhood. Seriously, who doesn't love Eric Carle?

Once again, this is a book with illustrations I just love. As much as I love reading the story, I also love using the clear and beautiful illustrations as a teaching tool. We count different foods, learn the names of food, point out different colors, etc.
