How to be a Good Dad and Father

Updated on May 5, 2015

Fond memories for father and son.

My son and I at the New Orleans Saints preseason game in 2008. His team got to run some plays at half time before the entire Super Dome crowd. It was so much fun for both of us.

It's all about the kids

Being a good dad is something that I take very seriously. My own father died when I was nine years old. I have been blessed to have a great wife and and a wonderful son and daughter. It takes some work and effort to be a good father to my children but it is worth the effort. If you don't have children but would like to one day, I hope that you realize that having children is a tremendous responsibility. Make sure that you are ready to put aside your own needs for the best for your kids. This may sound like a bold statement to some people. What? Put the childrens' needs above my own? Yes. It's certainly alright for fathers to take time for themselves with fishing or golf with buddies and that sort of thing. What I'm saying is don't let your golf game or work even take away the chances and opportunities you have to be with your kids. I went to see a movie called "Old Dogs" recently. It was a silly movie and maybe not the best but I did like when old man Robin Williams realized he'd made a big mistake when he chose a career move to Japan instead of the chance to make it work with his former wife and long lost kids. Yes, some things in life are more important than making the extra dollar. I thought that was a good message to send to dads. Sure, we have to work to provide for our families but making time for the family is a must for a happy life for you and your kids.

"Any man can be a father,
but it takes a special person to be a dad."

Quote for Dads

Every father should remember that one day his son will follow his example instead of his advice.

Do Things Together to Make Memories

One of the best parts about being a dad is getting to do things with my kids that I hope they will enjoy and find memorable. My hope and prayer is that my two kids feel like their parents loved them completely and we trained them well to be prepared for life. I'm and older than most father for kids 15 and 11 so maybe I'm a little more sentimental than most. In fact, I'm sure that I am. With my son now finishing up his 9th grade year and my daughter about to enter 6th grade next school year at the time of this writing edit, I realize that it will not be much longer before my son is a grown man and will be going off to college. It will be a hard thing to accept but your kids will not be kids forever. Sure, they'll still be your children but they will only be kids at least by society's standards until they are 18. Dad's, you have 18 years to teach your kids the right way in life and to enjoy them as they grow. Don't miss this chance to be a positive influence in your children's life. Do not ever underestimate the positive influence that you can have on your kids. Go to ball games, dance classes, fishing or whatever you can to spend meaningful time with your kids. Dad's, when we are gone I believe that a piece of us will live on with our kids. Don't you want that to be something positive and good in this world. Being a dad means not just donating your biological contribution to make a baby but actually being there for your child.

Four Wheeler Riding with my Kids

Four Wheeler Riding to Create Memories

I recently bought four wheeler for our family. The hope was to create some fond memories together as a family. The video above is of our first ever family ride together along with a couple of good friends. The video was shot with a Go Pro camera that was placed on the hood of my friend's side by side ATV. The ride took place in Fluker, Louisiana which is not far from the Kentwood home of the famous pop star Britney Spears.

Being a good father requires the same thing that being a good disciple does, the ability to die to self. For another inspiring Dad movie, you should see Courageous. The sacrifices you are making for your family are just that, courageous!

Geat advice, hoov. I especially like that quote near the end about how our sons will follow our example, not our advice. Food for thought...

Voted up and useful. And in a second, I'll also be a follower. Looking forward to more Hubs for Dads.
