Nursery Ideas for Boys & Girls 2014 Review
Review and Guide to Baby Nursery Equipment 2013
If you've just had a baby, let me first say congratulations! You have come here to get ideas for decorating and furnishing your little ones room. Babies need special types of furniture to not only keep them safe, but to make your life easier for caring for them.
Let's go over some essentials for baby's room.
First of all, you might want to decide what themes, or colors that you want to design your baby's room in. Because furniture comes in many different finishes or colors, you will want to have an idea of what your palette is beforehand. We have some very cute wall decal themes here that you can start with.
Cribs are a no brainer. Find one that has slats no bigger than a can of soda, has a mattress tightly fitted into it so there are no spaces on the sides, and opt for one that does not feature a drop down side since they have been found to be too unsafe. Mattresses for cribs are best when made with a waterproof surface and have not been made with any unsafe chemicals. The most important thing to remember when shopping for a crib mattress is that it be firm! Probably even more firm than you would choose for yourself.
Needed Items for the Nursery
Dressers are essential for housing all the itty bitty clothing and other other items that so inevitably come with babies. I personally like a changing table with drawers and/or cabinet, to store our things. However, full size dressers can be grown into much more easily. Armoires are nice to store different types of items, as well as clothing. It all just depends on your preference.
As I mentioned, a changing table is a must for me when caring for babies. The older one gets, the harder it is to get up and down from the floor 8 times a day! They keep baby from wanting to roll away and reach for things on the floor, protects your back more, and can often store baby gear quit conveniently.
Gliders are nice to have when soothing babies to sleep. When your baby has outgrown the use of a glider, they can be easily transitioned into another room in the house. Look for ones that have ottomans so you can rest your feet while rocking.
Top Rated Baby Nursery Baby Decor
DaVinci Mini Emily Crib
I like the DaVinci Mini Emily Crib because of its affordability and space saving size. This makes a great piece of furniture to have if you live in a very small place, or if your baby is sharing a room with a sibling. Not only that, but it converts to a twin bed when your child has outgrown the crib.
There are 4 levels of mattress support to accommodate your growing tyke. Made from New Zealand pine wood, the crib is lead and phthalate free with non-toxic finishes. There are six different finishes and colors to choose from as well.
For such a little thing, this crib is quite sturdy and has lasted us into the toddler years quite fine. Assembly took a bit of time, but overall it wasn't too hard. The mattress that comes with this crib is a bit on the thin side. If you decide to replace it, make sure to find a tight fitting mattress.]
Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Foam Crib Mattress
A very popular and highly rated mattress is the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Foam Crib Mattress. I love that it has an extra firm side for infants, and high density foam for toddlers. There is no worry with newborns on this mattress since it is so firm, you can barely see them sink into it when they are laying on it! It is made to be polyethylene, PVC, phthalate, and lead free with a non-toxic waterproof covering.
This is a great option for babies that may suffer from common allergies. The other thing I like most about this mattress is how light it is to move around. This makes changing the sheets that much easier.
South Shore Savannah Collection Door Chest
Check out the South Shore Savannah Collection Door Chest that comes in white. This lovely piece of furniture features 2 adjustable shelves so you can easily fit what you need on them. To put things out of sight, there are 2 drawers directly located under the shelves, and to the left is a door that houses 4 adjustable shelves.
This kind of chest can be used to store baby's clothes, but they would be mostly on shelves. Some people like drawers for clothing and yet others prefer something like this. I use units like these to store toys, books and shoes.
Animals Alphabet Baby Nursery Peel & Stick Wall Decals
I like the Animals Alphabet Baby Nursery Peel & Stick Wall Decals because they are gender neutral, cute, but also educational. My 2 year old has already begun to remember letters by their names, and I am having fun teaching her from the walls. She is recognizing what letters look like as well as learning about animals.
These are cut on 4 sheets and ready for you to just peel off and stick on the wall. Put it somewhere you don't like? No worries, just pull it right back off and reapply! They are made so gentle that you won't pull any paint off. I love decals because when your child outgrows a certain design, there are hundreds of others to choose from.
Best Nursery Ideas for 2013
Delta Eclipse Changing Table
For a basic table that gives you the height you need for changing, and some storage underneath, consider the Delta Eclipse Changing Table. Other tables feature cabinets and drawers but you pay almost double what you get with this table. It features the changing area that has a safety belt attached and rails along the sides.
There are 2 shelves on the bottom for storing diapers and other changing essentials. I tend to use shelves like these with colored baskets that match the decor in our room. This way, it keeps essentials together for easier grabbing, and out of sight instead of strewn across the shelves.
As mentioned, this is a very simple design for those on a budget, or those that don't require a lot of flair. In 6 different colors to choose from, you can easily match your nursery decor. I highly recommend a changing table to make your life easier!
Rockabye Glider Sunny Recliner
You might be familiar with the typical gliders on the market, but this Rockabye Glider Sunny Recliner is a bit unique in the fact that it actually reclines. Since it has a footrest, there is no ottoman to go with the chair. It reclines up to 61" and glides very smoothly. It also swivels for easier movement as well.
My husband often finds me and the baby asleep in it in the morning! Speaking of a man, the chair is quite big enough to comfortably sit one. The fabric covering the chair is a velvet kind that is very soft to touch. To clean it, just simply take a wet cloth and rub out spots. If you must, you can also use some gentle soap as well.
Farmhouse Table and 4 Chair Set
I tend to lean toward wood furniture instead of plastics, so I love this Farmhouse Table and 4 Chair Set. It comes in three color finishes to match your household decor. The size is made perfectly for young children.
I know people who use these in their dining areas for multiple young ones to eat at. Having it in a playroom or bedroom will ensure that your toddler has a place to color, or play with toys.
You can tell it is a quality made product since it is lightweight enough to easily move around, but heavy enough to be very durable. You should be advised that the wood is soft enough that over time, it will accumulate some dents in it. Assembly for the table was quite easy, though the chairs took some time to put together. Overall, it's been a great addition to our playroom.
