Defining a Role Model

Updated on May 25, 2012

While writing a poem for my father for father’s day, I started to wonder about the term “role model”. There has been much debate about what a role model really is, who can actually be one, and what it takes to be one. I know particularly in the entertainment industry you hear some artist’s say that they are not trying to be a role model. I ponder on the definition of a role model, I mean what exactly is that and are you one even if you do not want to be? One of my biggest role models does in fact happen to be my dad.

To me we all have roles that we play in life, for example, I play the role as a mother, a daughter, a life coach, a poet, a writer, even the founder of a nonprofit. So those are roles, some are primary and some are secondary. To me, a role model is a role that you naturally play in life or choose to play and the model part is just that, you model the role. My father was a model of a father; he showed me what a father was like. It’s like when you go to the store and you see models (although they do not move), they are modeling the clothes (to show you what they look like or what is a good way to wear them). Maybe you had a teacher, a writer, a poet, etc. that you looked up too, those were all role models to you.

My whole point of this story is that whether you want to be a role model or not, you are a role model. I know as a mother I have to try be the best model of a mother for my son. I know in a previous article, I made referenced to when Jesus said that our light must shine. We are the salt and the light of the world, and we are set apart as children of God to light our light shine, to inspire, and to lead others and that too is a great example of a role model. Sometimes we have to check our actions and keep them intact because you never know who is watching. Of course, we should not put on a persona in which we are going out of our way trying to impress others but we should be ourselves. Once we realize how wonderful we truly are and can be our lights will shine. Jesus said that we should be careful even when we entertain strangers because we could possibly be talking to an angel. We are all role models. So, whatever role that we play in our life, we should do our best to be the best model that we can for that particular role.

I don't think we can focus on one role model... There are many role models in everyone's life.. Some quality of a person make us to attract to him and other to others..

You share some great thoughts. It takes constant awareness and intregity to be a great role model for children. I try, but sometimes I mess up, especially when I get frustrated with poor drivers. Great lesson and reminder for all of us!

Interesting. I guess I never looked at it like that, but you are very correct. We are a role model in everything we do whether we want to be or not. YOu just never know who is watching us and planning on mimicing our moves!
