Eco Friendly Lunch Boxes and Products for School

Updated on August 7, 2011

Back to School is right around the corner and with it comes the infamous school supply checklist for your little ones. However, maybe this year is the year to start going green and getting your kids involved with one of the most important supplies...the lunchbox!

Every year landfills are piled high with plastic bags, brown lunch bags, aluminum foil and many other lunch products that are used on a daily basis. According to the EPA, each child that brings a brown lunch bag to school everyday generates about 67 pounds of waste by the end of the school year.

Reusable lunch bags and products are the smart way to help cutback on disposable lunch items like paper and plastic bags, and help you save money and natural resources (oil, water, energy).

What to Look for in a Reusable Product

Because the demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly products has increased in the past few years, the selections for shopping has increased, too. When shopping for a reusable lunch product make sure to keep an eye out and read all the facts and reviews before purchasing. There is a variety of manufacturers and options to choose from but all the products out there are not good choices.

Make sure that the items you are interested in are lead, Bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalate-free. Items that have polyurethane inner layers are not a problem as long as the item has been tested and found not to shift into food and leave a "plastic" odor behind. Also, make sure the lunch products are sturdy enough for your children and will last for years to come.

Even though you have a long list of choices to look through when purchasing make sure you take into consideration the most important factor...does your child or teen like it! Parents can get obsessed about finding Eco-friendly items for their children but kids can be picky. They want something that looks "cool" and aren't embarrassed to carry.

Unique Eco-Friendly Lunchbags

Kids Konserve Lunch Kit

Kids Konserve line of reusable waste-free lunch products are made from the safest, non-leaching, non-toxic, BPA, PVC, phthalate, and lead-free materials!

The kit includes a reusable, waste-free recycled cotton sack, cloth napkin, 304 food-grade stainless steel beverage bottle, food kozy and two 304 food-grade stainless steel food containers. For the whole set, as displayed in the picture, runs from $37.00 to $45.00. I know that sounds high but for what is included and if you take into account the items you won't have to buy anymore it's a great deal!

Graze Organic

Graze Organic was created by two mothers that were committed to making the world a better place for their children. They created their organic lunch bags by using only 100% certified organic cotton with no plastic linings. All the artwork is done with water based inks, each silk screened by hand. And the best part is that all the products are washable.

As a customer you can buy everything separate from the lunch bag to the snack bags or you have the option of building a kit and getting everything at once (which is the better deal). The prices range from $24.00 to $47.00 and there are three designs you can choose from.

Dabbawalla Lunch Bags

Susan Givens and Carol Mack, sisters, teamed up to create Dabbawalla Bags. The bags are inspired by the simplicity of European design and the product line is sized specifically for pre-school and early elementary school children.

Dabbawalla Lunch Bags and Lunch Sacks are made from eco-sponge and their Lunch Bags and Lunch Sacks are certified free of lead, PVC, phthalates. The bags are a machine washable fabric, stain resistant and insulated to help retain food temperatures. The bags are around $30.00 and generally sold online.

Rebel Green Lunch Totes

Rebel Green Totes were created by Ali Ruvin and Melina Marcus because they love fashion and beauty, but also wanted to make the world a prettier place by being eco-conscious. Rebel Green is dedicated to creating goods that are chic and edgy and eco-friendly.

Rebel Green Shopping Totes are made of 100% organic cotton, manufactured in the USA and printed with low impact inks. These designer bags have an easy Velcro closure, a convenient outer pocket, and it comes with a coordinating cloth napkin. They're perfect for middle school children and teens who are more concerned about the appearance of their supplies. These bags are around $24.00 and include the bag and a matching cloth napkin.

OOTS! Lunch Box

OOTS! is a Dutch design and the materials used give these lunch boxes a surprising look and make them playful and tactile objects for little fingers to manipulate. It is designed to be cool, contemporary and prevent food from being tossed around.

OOTS! Lunch boxes are BPA-free, phthalate-free and lead free. The lunch box and containers are dishwasher safe and the containers can be used in a microwave. The box has a slight dip in the lid with an elastic strap so you can attach your water bottle or canteen bottle onto the top. The Lunchbox comes in three different color combinations: Blue, Green and Orange. They are sold either without containers, or as a Deluxe version with one large and four small containers inside. The price for this lunch box ranges from $27.00 to $40.00.

Finding an Eco-friendly lunch bag is easier but what about the snack/sandwich bags? To think outside the plastic bag, Lunchskins is a high-quality product and are perfect for sandwiches and snacks. Lunchskins was made by three moms with ten kids among them that decided to start this company to help people lead a green lifestyle by making small changes every day – like wasting less and saving more.

LunchSkins are made from a thick cotton fabric that is coated with a food-safe polyurethane liner. They have been certified as lead, Bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalate-free. Also, LunchSkins are grease-proof and moisture proof making them ideal for messy sandwiches and snacks. But, just in case they get too dirty, the Lunchskins are dishwasher safe. They store your food with a velcro closure, keep in moisture and save thousands of plastic baggies at the same time.

The Lunchskins bags come in three sizes (snack, sandwich and sub) and an array of colors and designs. These little snack bags range from $7.00 to $11.00.

These are just a few of my favorite reusable, Eco-friendly lunch products, and from what I found have some of the highest ratings. Whatever you choose when searching for a sustainable product, just remember you're helping to change the environment!

Thank you very much for your comment. It is very startling to read about all these facts online about waste and how it's affecting the environment. But it's great to know that something as simple as using reusable products to pack your lunch you're getting rid of that waste everyday.

What an awesome and thorough hub! I appreciate how you explained why these eco-friendly options are a good idea as well as reviewing a variety of products. That statistic about the amount of waste bagged lunches create was pretty startling! This could be very useful to adults who take their lunches to work, as well. Great job! Voted up/awesome :)
