Fun Things to Do With Your Kids On A Snow Day

Updated on March 19, 2013

The roads are icy and school is cancelled! What are you going to do today? Here is a list of 15 things to keep everyone busy during the day and create memories.

1. First and foremost, throw on your snowsuit & snow boots and GET OUTSIDE TO PLAY IN THE SNOW! I don’t know about you but I LOVE sledding, building a snowman and snowball fights!

2. Add food coloring to water in squirt bottles and use them to “color” in the snow.

3. Once you are nice and cold, come inside to enjoy a warm cup of hot cocoa!

4. Relax with kiddos and enjoy a movie.

5. Bake cookies or try making a kid-friendly recipe with them. Of course you will get to enjoy this later as a snack!

6. Build a fort with tunnels in your living room and through the hallway.

7. Have the kids pretend they are the news team and film them broadcasting the weather report to you.

8. Use masking tape to build a road throughout your house and make a town to drive their cars through.

9. Take a reading break! Everyone curls up with their favorite book or read from a chapter book together.

10. Play cards and board games.

11. Start a family band and write songs together.

12. Create an obstacle course.

13. Exercise together.

14. Host a magic show or talent show.

15. Make homemade ice cream

16. Make snowflakes indoors using a coffee filter and cutting out your own pattern then hang them on the window.

I hope you have found some new ways to have FUN with your kiddos on a snow day! Enjoy the snow and stay warm!

I remember those snow days when we lived up north and our child way little. We spent many hours building indoor forts and obstacle courses. Your ideas are excellent and will help many parents to keep their kids busy for days!

You can change one to play in the rain. I have two boys, I've even let them change into old clothes and play in the mud. Thanks for reading and commenting, Careermommy!

Stephanie, I love this hub. The only thing I will change is the title, "Fun Things to do With Your Kids on a Rainy Day." LOL, since I'm a California girl we don't get snowy days, at least not in my area. But, we can still do all of the things you suggested, except items, 1 and 2. Thank you for sharing this!

Thank you, kidscrafts! I am definitely suggesting a toilet if we make it outside today (the wind is fierce right now.) My husband would appreciate that since he is a plumber! :)

      I love all your suggestions!

When I was adolescent and living in Belgium, we had a rare snowfall but enough to build a snowman. I found the idea a little bit too boring so I decided to built a toilet. People were suprised but I had fun.... and at least people reacted to my "art" :-)

These are great suggestions. I live in the South, so we do not have snow days really, except every once in a while, but the snow only lasts a couple of hours normally. One year, it did last three days.

      Voted up ++ and sharing

      God bless, Faith Reaper

Haha, billybuc! I think I will always be a big kid stuck in an older body! I don't ever want to grow up! :) Thank you for reading and commenting! We are expecting an icy snowstorm here in Missouri tomorrow morning so we are planning for a snow day! Now that I have made my list I am hoping we can cross some of these activities off tomorrow.

I'm just a big kid stuck in a 64 year old body. I still go sledding and love to snowshoe and build snowmen. I hope I never grow out of that. :) Great suggestions.
