Hans Christian Andersen's Thumbelina

Updated on September 25, 2014

A Beloved Fairy Tale

Sometimes I wonder off into my mind and dream childlike things. I'm sent back in time by a thought, a picture, a memory, and sometimes a song. Now that I have two children of my own, I often glimpse into their child fantasies. It reminds me of times when I too would drift off into fairy tales. When I was growing up, I often listened to music. I loved to dance around my room and sing. There were certain songs that transfixed me. There was one in particular that captured my imagination--Thumbelina performed by Larry Groce. It was on my well worn out Disney record. Incidentally, my favorite of the 1980's Faerie Tale Theater's was also Thumbelina. I guess I have a fondness for her. Maybe it is the thoughts of fairies flying around, or maybe it was her plight in escaping Toad or Mr. Mole. Whatever the reason, I am taken back in time when I am reminded of Thumbelina. I hope I draw out your childlike fancy in this lens.

Larry Groce's Thumbelina

There is something magical in this man's voice. It transports me to a magical place. It lulls me, soothes me. I cannot describe it really. It touched my little 7 year old heart, and I feel 7 once again when I hear it. This song was featured on Disney Children's Favorites 2 which was released in 1979.

Thumbelina has touched the hearts of both the young and old throughout the years. Many versions have been produced, and these are but a few.

Carrie Fisher as Thumbelina

Back in the height of her Star Wars days, Carrie Fisher played a delightful young lady named Thumbelina. She is innocent, sweet, and a joy to watch. I think my favorite scenes are with the sparrow. Thumbelina rescues a frozen sparrow and eagerly awaits for his return when her fate seems sealed by the fact that Mr. Mole wants to marry her.

Do Not Let Your Children Miss Out!

Faerie Tale Theater was an instant classic with top notch actors! Billy Crystal and Jeff Goldblum in The Three Little Pigs are wonderful and very funny!

Danny Kaye, Raffi, and yes Jim Groce all sang about her. Download these songs to enjoy!

Still remember Danny Kaye singing Thumbelina. My girls loved the 1994 cartoon version. Great tribute lens. I might try using the "Going Camping" or "Cloud" theme, if you have the options.

What a super collection of "all things Thumbelina"! She was always one of my favourite story characters when I was a little girl. I knew the Danny Kaye song about her from the film about Hans Christian Anderson but not the JIm Groce song - it's lovely :) A really sweet and personal lens about a childhood favourite - blessed by this Squid Angel as part of the "Back To School Bus Trip"!

@CCGAL: I've never heard of it. I went looking for it online. I couldn't find any info, but it is on sale on amazon. There are many Aesop fables I had never heard of either, but I have a copy of all of them. I think I will start reading them to my daughter soon.

My favorite fairy tale of all time is called Wings of Flame, and is the main story in a book of fables by the same name, edited/compiled by one Joseph B. Egan in the early part of last century. I adore the book, and all of the fables, but Wings of Flame remains my favorite of all time.

I used to watch a cartoon Thumbelina movie in the early 80's that I LOVED on beta. I have been earnestly searching for it on the internet- but no luck :( Would you have any ideas how to track it down? The 1994 version is good, but nothing like the one I fell in love with.

@anonymous: I found a 1977 version that looks like an old anime..

Do you remember anything about it. Details would help

I'm trying to remember if I had any favorite fairy tales as a kid. Princesses never really appealed to me LOL. I like the song you posted though because it reminds me of what I'm trying to do for LGBTQ teens...find love and acceptance and all that.

Oh yes, there's a Jewish version of Tom Thumb called Ktonton IIRC. I'll have to look it up again because I barely remember it.

I remember reading Thumbelina as a child. I'm not sure if it's my favorite, but I do like Hans Christian Andersen tales more than the older, sometimes gruesome tales of the Brothers Grimn.
