Advice For New Grandmothers
Becoming a Grandmother!
"YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL GRAND DAUGHTER!" These are the words I heard on the other end of the line from my very excited son-in-law! I ran through our house squealing "It's a girl, it's a girl!!" This little girl is now nine!! Do I love being a Grandmother? YES! I was only 47 when I first became a Grandmother! Below are some helpful hints for new Grandmothers.
I Am now a Grandmother!
When that wee baby comes into the world you automatically become a Grandmother! You can't change it! It's almost like becoming a mother again. You see this tiny baby and people say now we will have a photo with Granny!! OH! Suddenly I have become a Granny!! I chose to be called Nanny as I thought it a younger version of Granny or Grandmother! Sometimes people wait till the child starts talking to see what it will call you. It helps if there are grandparents on both sides of the family to have different names so everyone knows who you are referring to in conversation.
MY FIRST GRANDCHILD
I'm sure others will agree that there is something really special about your first Grandchild. The joy that comes from seeing this little person come into the family, to love them and to watch them grow and develop and learn. It seems such a short time from our own little girl was a baby and now this is her baby!
HELPING WITH YOUR GRANDCHILD
A new baby can be unbelievably demanding! If your grandchild is breastfeeding, it is not unusual for them to want the breast every two-and-a-half hours. As well as being fed, they need changed. washed and held. On top of this there are the normal jobs in the house. This is where we as Grandparents can really help. Just by doing the washing and ironing, making some meals, fetching some groceries from the store. This is being a really helpful grandmother!
Don't try to take control!
The hard part about being a Grandmother is not being the one in control. You might think that the baby is not getting enough milk, is not being winded properly, but don't give opinions unless asked. Some new parents will ask you for your opinion, but others are happier to ask more recent parents, like their friends or brothers and sisters. Don't be offended; just help where you can and they will think you're wonderful!
