Advice For New Grandmothers

Updated on July 12, 2017

Becoming a Grandmother!

"YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL GRAND DAUGHTER!" These are the words I heard on the other end of the line from my very excited son-in-law! I ran through our house squealing "It's a girl, it's a girl!!" This little girl is now nine!! Do I love being a Grandmother? YES! I was only 47 when I first became a Grandmother! Below are some helpful hints for new Grandmothers.

I Am now a Grandmother!

When that wee baby comes into the world you automatically become a Grandmother! You can't change it! It's almost like becoming a mother again. You see this tiny baby and people say now we will have a photo with Granny!! OH! Suddenly I have become a Granny!! I chose to be called Nanny as I thought it a younger version of Granny or Grandmother! Sometimes people wait till the child starts talking to see what it will call you. It helps if there are grandparents on both sides of the family to have different names so everyone knows who you are referring to in conversation.

MY FIRST GRANDCHILD

I'm sure others will agree that there is something really special about your first Grandchild. The joy that comes from seeing this little person come into the family, to love them and to watch them grow and develop and learn. It seems such a short time from our own little girl was a baby and now this is her baby!

HELPING WITH YOUR GRANDCHILD

A new baby can be unbelievably demanding! If your grandchild is breastfeeding, it is not unusual for them to want the breast every two-and-a-half hours. As well as being fed, they need changed. washed and held. On top of this there are the normal jobs in the house. This is where we as Grandparents can really help. Just by doing the washing and ironing, making some meals, fetching some groceries from the store. This is being a really helpful grandmother!

Don't try to take control!

The hard part about being a Grandmother is not being the one in control. You might think that the baby is not getting enough milk, is not being winded properly, but don't give opinions unless asked. Some new parents will ask you for your opinion, but others are happier to ask more recent parents, like their friends or brothers and sisters. Don't be offended; just help where you can and they will think you're wonderful!

Useful things you can do as a Grandparent

1. Help with Washing

2. Ironing

3. Cleaning the house

4. Helping with the other children

5.Taking children to school or clubs

6. Cooking some meals

7. Leaving some pre-prepared meals.

Down below in comments section leave some useful tips that you as a Grandparent found helpful. Also things not to do! Maintaining family relationships is so important at a time when everyone can be very emotional.

Thank you Skye. They are so precious and at the stage your grandsons are at they can be so entertaining! My little grandson was with me when I had some classical music playing in the house when he looked up at me and said "Nanny that music makes me want to hug you" bless him. We just want them to grow up to be men and woman of God. When I see my other little grandson down on his knees praying with his Daddy that verse comes to mind about bringing them up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. How quickly they start to copy what we do and what a responsibility both for parents and grandparents to be a good example. love Jane

Jane Darn lost first comment. Oh that annoys me. Anyway a terrific hub filled with useful tips for the new nanny. That is the name I chose as well. Love it, I knew we had much in common, tee he. I loved this great wisdom, 'Don't be offended; just help where you can and they will think you're wonderful!'

I am Blessed beyond measure to be so close to my grandsons. 2.5 and 1.5. They are a joy in my life. I am touched I can be a part of training them up in the way they should go. I get to pray for them and hold them, love them and hand them back. I think grand-parenting is a reward for getting though parenting. Without God I would mess it up but with God it is sooo....good. I tell my little ones about Jesus allot. They pray to Him already.. Now that is a huge Blessings.

Keep em coming girl. Glory to God. He has you here for a reason. You touch many hearts. Love, Skye.
