Green Baby Showers for Earth Friendly Moms: Reusable Materials

Why go green?

Turn your organic, earth friendly ways into a cute theme for a baby shower. Whether or not the mom-to-be is a green mom herself, the Earth and your guests will appreciate the care and time you put in to make this baby shower a unique occasion.

A green themed shower works well for either gender, especially if it is a surprise! Green is a naturally pleasing color to the eye, and works well in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings. It is a nice change from the typical blue and pink baby showers that saturate the newborn world.

Invitations

First things first, the invitation. The greenest way to invite your guests is with an e-vite. It saves the environment and a few trees in the process. However, many people don't like electronic invitations, and want to have something to send out. Perhaps it is a last ditch effort to keep the post office in business.

Thankfully there are lots of ways to reuse materials. Use brown paper bags from previous shopping excursions, recycled paper, or even invitations that can be planted! Just make sure your guests don't plant it before they've RSVPed.

Decorations

The key to a green party isn't just to use the color green. It is to make sure that all your materials are reusable in some way. Trade in the standard streamers and hang green and white organic onesies along a clothesline.

Use green apples, peas, and other leafy greens as food options and a centerpiece. Candles or pots of herbs double as decorations and party favors. Try planning your shower outdoors, where nature is the focus.

All your table settings should be reusable and organic. Tablecloths, napkins, dishes and utensils should not be plastic or paper. Try turning jelly jars into cups that hold a lime spritzer. Though a bit more work in cleanup, the lack of paper goods will help to make the occasion feel more festive.

Food

Depending on the time of day, you may want to go for a tea and luncheon or an evening of dessert indulgences. Vegetables that work well with a green theme are cucumbers, zucchini, watermelon, honeydew, celery, snap peas, green beans, asparagus, broccoli, lettuce, kiwis, avocados, and pears. Perhaps you would rather go with a dessert station centered around mint chocolate chip or pistachio ice cream?

Cake images abound on the Internet and are sure to provide you with endless ideas for shape, style, flavor, and color.

Gifts

Guests can get in on the fun by providing them with instructions for gift buying. Encourage organic materials like cloth or receiving blankets to wrap presents. Provide links to organic baby websites for purchasing supplies that are made from earth conscious companies.

One of the most economical ways to give green is to bring a handmade gift. Perhaps you have something from your own baby raising days that can be re-gifted. Etsy is a great site to shop for gifts designed by artists.

Find a mom with a baby and use his little feet to make green footprints on an organic tee-shirt. The options are limitless!

The best gift you can give a new mom is the promise that you will do your part in helping to keep our Earth clean. Doing your part ensures that the next generation of little ones will have a planet that is able to be enjoyed.

Happy planning!

What great ideas! And such nice pictures too. I would add that encouraging people to give used or hand me down gifts is also a great way to go green.
