How Do I Make Sure My Kids Are Safe Online?

Updated on July 19, 2012

Every parent wants their children to be safe. But in the 21st century, with computers, smartphone, and other internet-enabled devices, it is much tougher to protect and shield our children from the dangers of the world. You may be having trouble making sure your children are safe. Since this problem concerns many parents world wide, I feel I should try to do as much as I can to help them. Here's a couple tips on how you can make sure your child is safe.

1. Educate your child

Though not the easiest step, it should still help your child get an understanding. Tell them that there are many harmful predators online, and that they shouldn't talk to strangers online. Tell them not to give any personal information online without your permission.

2. Install the K9 Web Filter

If you want to take safety a step further, I strongly recommend you to download K9 Web Protection. This free utility blocks access to dangerous websites of all sorts. You can also block access to individual sites. The filter blocks just about every bad site on the internet. The program can also track browsing history, even if your child is using private browsing. The only way to access the settings of this program is with a parental password. They also have an iPhone/ iPod/ iPad application. If you are interested, you can download and learn more about this product right here. And best of all, it's all free.

3. Regularly check up on your child

This does not mean to stalk your child's every move. No. What I mean is regularly ask your child what he/she's doing on the computer. Don't make them feel uncomfortable, just ask them in a normal tone. This should help you feel more comfortable. If they are doing something you don't want them doing, calmly explain to them why you don't like the site.

Remember, the internet is a dangerous place, but when you take the right steps, the internet can become a friendly place for everyone!
