The School vacations brings the much needed relief to the kids and the parents alike, to regain the strength and beat the stress for some days. But it becomes a problem to engage the kids within few days of the vacation.

Children have so much of energy and they don't know, 'What to do' after a few days of relaxation. The problem is even greater, if both the parents are working and it is a nuclear family, that means grandparents don't live together.

Here are some tips and ideas to keep your kids engaged in a constructive way------

Take Up a Hobby

  • Music---both Instrumental and Vocal

You can enroll your kids in music classes or if they prefer, they can learn playing violin, guitar, drums, tabla or sitar, whichever is enjoyable to them. It is always good to learn this, as music is a great stress buster and will be an important personality trait for them forever. They can entertain themselves as well as others by this very quality.

  • Painting--Pottery--Handicrafts--

Some children are greatly skilled in crafts, but do not get enough time to spare due to their academic courses. Summer vacation is an opportune time to pick up these hobbies and satisfy their artistic mind.

Art forms such as Batik painting, Tie and Dye, Beads Painting, Collage Painting, Sculpture, Wood carving etc. can be easily learned in two months crash courses, especially during summer breaks and there are plenty of individual or group classes available for the same everywhere.

  • Cooking

Whether it is a boy or a girl, they like to cook and they can be be given small tasks, related to cooking.

In this way, they can even learn units of measurements and that's the trick.

Cooking is creative and requires patience and precision, quite necessary in building up the personality of your kids.

  • Reading

Reading is a very important habit, in which today' s generation of kids are losing interest, thanks to the internet revolution. Even if they read, they do so on internet.

Parents should try to inculcate the habit of reading in kids, whether it is inspirational story books or historical or mythological books, with pictures.

Engage kids in Group Activities In Residential Apartments---

Some students and parents find it easy, to simply do 'nothing', while others get hooked to Internet or Television, which is not correct at all.

How about organising some quiz contest, some racing event, some drama or stage show for the kids. Of course, the parents will have a busy time but the children will learn something for sure.

  • Sports

Whether the schools are open or not, physical activity is a must for everyone, and that includes the kids too. Instead of spending all time indoors, they should take up some sport, if not learn to play sport like football, basketball, lawn tennis, badminton etc. It is very important for their physical health and growing up years.

  • Spending Time With Family And Friends

Vacations provide a good opportunity to spend time with your family. If the kids are not living with their grandparents, they should go to visit and meet them. It makes them so happy and the kids learn a lot in their affectionate company.

It also leads to healthy communication within the family. Picnics and parties at a suitable location, with lot of open space, can be organised and the kids would really enjoy and remember it for a lifetime.

  • Travelling and learning

Children love to explore and Travel. Travelling to a new place, within your own country or abroad, gives them a chance to get familiar with new cultures, different languages and new locations. Prior planning is required, if you are going to travel. In this regard, I have published a hub before.

This is a great way to spend your vacation and very educative for your kids.

In fact travelling is a great teacher---Let the kids look through the maps and direction themselves.

And if they learn a new language in the process, how good is that!

Recap And Replan

It is very important to keep the kids intellectually active during vacations too.

This is a time when they can work to make up in their weak areas. For example if they have some problem in Mathematics or Grammar, those areas can be paid special attention.

A recap of what was learnt and a planning of what has to be learnt really helps. If the children have some idea of the upcoming syllabus or some understanding beforehand, comprehension in the new class becomes easier.

So parents should see to it that at least an hour or two is devoted to studies as well, during vacations.

Practice makes a man perfect and performance is adversely affected if there is no regular practice.

I think that explains it all.Make your kids strengthen their weak areas, such as mathematics, numericals, formulas or grammar.

  • Summer Camps

There is a mushrooming of Summer Camps these days. Choose wisely, if you are sending your child to one of them.

But I feel, this is a great opportunity for both parents and children, to spend quality time together. Lot of healthy communication and bonding can take place, if you do so.

Make The Most Of The Long School Vacation: Learn With Fun!

  • You can think of various other ways of how to engage your kids to have a constructive summer vacation for your kids.
  • Technology is everywhere in today's World and is almost a part of life.
  • While there are many benefits of technology for learning purposes but parents should see to it that the children do not get addicted to it.
  • For sound physical and mental growth, outdoor activities is very important.

The purpose is to 'Learn With Fun.'

Rather than feeling discontented about previous year's performances, concentrate on new beginnings simply by Relaxing, Rejuvenating and Recharging your body and mind.

While summer vacations are a necessary break from the routine life, it is important to keep the children from losing, what they have learnt. So, have a planning to make the most of the vacation.

I found these great sandcasting kits at Beach and Nature Company (beachandnatureco.com) that were a wonderful activity to do with my 4 grandkids. The kit comes with everything to make an 8" x 6" casting. the activity (including finding all of the treasures to put into it) took up a full afternoon and afterwards we had great keepsakes of the day.

Summer fun while learning important lessons is a great adventure! As a child, I enrolled in the summer reading program every year at the library. It seems to have ignited by love of writing. You have posted some really great suggestions for parents. Well done!

I remember joining hobby classes, such as painting, Batik art, social service groups during my childhood days during two months long Summer Vacation.

Even my kids have learnt a lot during vacations. The choices of course have changed with changing times. They love electronics and adventure sports.

      Appreciate your insightful comments! Thanks!
