How to Engage Children Constructively, During School Vacations and Holidays
How To Make The Most, of the Holidays and Vacations
The Holidays and School vacations bring the much needed relief to the children and the parents alike, to regain the strength and beat the stress for some days. But it becomes a problem to engage the kids during those days of the vacation.
Children have so much of energy and they don't know, 'What to do,’ after a few days of relaxation. The problem is even greater, if both the parents are working and it is a nuclear family, that means grandparents don't live together.
Here are some tips and ideas to keep your children engaged in a constructive way.
Take Up a Hobby
Music---both Instrumental and Vocal
You can enroll your kids in music classes or if they prefer, they can learn playing violin, guitar, drums, tabla or sitar, whichever is enjoyable to them. It is always good to learn this, as music is a great stress buster and will be an important personality trait for them forever. They can entertain themselves as well as others by this very quality.
Some children are greatly skilled in crafts, but do not get enough time to spare due to their academic courses. Summer vacation is an opportune time to pick up these hobbies, and satisfy their artistic mind.
Art forms, such as Batik painting, Tie and Dye, Beads Painting, Collage Painting, Sculpture, Wood carving etc. can be easily learned, in two months crash courses, especially during summer breaks. There are plenty of individual or group classes available for the same everywhere.
There are online courses as well, but it is always advisable to send the children to real places. It’s important for them to socialise with real people, to make real friends, interact with them.
Whether it is a boy or a girl, they like to cook, and they can be be given small tasks, related to cooking. In this way, they can even learn units, of measurements and that's the trick. Cooking is creative and requires patience and precision, quite necessary in building up the overall personality of your children.
Reading is a very important habit, in which the present generation of children and youngsters are losing interest, thanks to the internet revolution. Even if they read, they do so on the internet. Parents should try to inculcate the habit of reading in children, whether it is an inspirational story book or historical or mythological book, with pictures.
Children love fun, celebrations and dance. How wonderful it would be, if they learn the moves and skills, at a young age. And holidays are perfect to give them this opportunity to learn dance.
Let them decide, what they want to learn, classical or contemporary. Let them take interest in stage performances as well. All these activities are essential, for their overall personality growth and development.

Engage the children, in Some Group Activities in Residential Apartments
Some students and parents find it easy, to simply do 'nothing', while others get hooked to Internet or Television. Both of which is not correct at all.
How about organising some quiz contest, some racing event, some drama or stage show for the kids. Of course, the parents will have a busy time, but the children will learn something for sure.
Whether the schools are open or not, physical activity is a must for everyone, and that includes the children too. Instead of spending all time indoors, they should take up some sport, if not learn to play sport like football, basketball, lawn tennis, badminton etc. It is very important, for their physical and emotional health for the growing up years.
Spending Time With Family And Friends
Vacations provide a good opportunity, to spend time with your family. If the children are not living with their grandparents, they should go to visit and meet them. It makes them so happy and the kids learn a lot in the affectionate company of their grandparents.
This also leads to healthy communication within the family. Picnics and parties at a suitable location, with lot of open space, can be organised and the chiLoren would really enjoy and remember it for their lifetime.
Traveling and learning
Children love to explore and Travel. Traveling to a new place, within your own country or abroad, gives them a chance to get familiar with new cultures, different languages and new locations. Prior planning is required, if you want to travel comfortably.
This is a great way to spend your vacation and very educative for the children.
In fact, traveling is a great teacher---Let the children look through the maps and directions themselves. And if they learn a new language in the process, how wonderful is that!

Recap And Replan
It is very important to keep the children intellectually active, during vacations and holidays too.
This is the time, when they can work to make up in their weak areas. For example, if they have some problem in Mathematics or Grammar, those areas can be paid special attention.
A recap, of what was learnt, and a planning of what has to be learnt really helps. If the children have some idea of the upcoming syllabus or some understanding beforehand, comprehension in the new class becomes easier.
Therefor, parents should see to it that at least an hour or two, is devoted to studies as well, during holidays and vacations.
Practice makes a man perfect and performance is adversely affected if there is no regular practice.
I believe, the above quote explains it all. Make your children strengthen their weak areas, such as mathematics, numericals, formulas or grammar during holidays.
There is a mushrooming of Summer Camps these days. Choose wisely, if you are sending your child to one of them.
What I feel, is that the holidays are a great opportunity for both parents and children, to spend quality time together. Lot of healthy communication and bonding can take place, if you do so.
