How To Make The Most, of The Holidays and Vacations

The Holidays and the School vacations bring the much needed relief to the children and the parents alike, to regain the strength and beat the stress for some days. But it becomes a problem to engage the kids, during those days of the vacation.

Children are full of energy and they don't know, 'What to do,’ after a few days of relaxation. The problem is even greater, if both the parents are working and it is a nuclear family, that means the grandparents don't live together.

Here are some tips and ideas to keep your children engaged in a constructive way.

Take Up a Hobby

  • Music---both Instrumental and Vocal

You can enroll your kids in music classes or if they prefer, they can learn playing violin, guitar, drums, tabla or sitar, whichever is enjoyable to them. It is always good to learn this, as music is a great stress buster and will be an important personality trait for them, forever. They can entertain themselves, as well as others, by their creative talent.

  • Painting--Pottery--Handicrafts

Some children are greatly skilled in crafts, but do not get enough time to spare, due to their academic courses. Summer vacation is an opportune time to pick up these hobbies, and satisfy their artistic mind.

Art forms, such as Batik painting, Tie and Dye, Beads Painting, Collage Painting, Sculpture, Wood carving etc. can be easily learned, in two months crash courses, especially during summer breaks. There are plenty of individual or group classes available for the same, everywhere.

There are online courses as well, but it is always advisable to send the children to real places. It’s important for them to socialise with the real people, to make real friends, and interact with them.

  • Cooking

Whether it is a boy or a girl, they like to cook, and they can be be given small tasks, related to cooking. In this way, they can even learn the units of measurements, and that's the trick. Cooking is a creative activity, and requires patience and precision, quite necessary in building up, the overall personality of the children.

  • Reading

Reading is an important habit, in which the present generation of children and youngsters are losing interest; thanks to the internet revolution. Even if they read, they do so on the internet. Parents should try to inculcate the habit of reading in the children, whether it is an inspirational story book or historical or mythological book, with pictures.

  • Dance Classes

Children love fun, celebrations, music and dance. How wonderful it would be, if they learn the moves and skills, at a young age. And holidays are the perfect time, to give them this opportunity to learn dance.

Let them decide, what they want to learn, classical or contemporary. Let them take interest in the stage performances as well. All these activities are essential, for their overall personality growth and development.

Engage the children, in Some Group Activities in Residential Apartments

Some students and parents find it easy, to simply do 'nothing', while others get hooked to the Internet or Television. Both of which, is not correct at all.

How about organising some quiz contest, some racing event, some drama or stage show for the kids. Of course, the parents will have a busy time, but the children will learn something for sure.

  • Sports

Whether the schools are open or not, physical activity is a must for everyone, and that includes the children too. Instead of spending all time indoors, they should take up some sport, if not learn to play sport like football, basketball, lawn tennis, badminton etc. It is very important, for their physical and emotional health for the growing up years.

  • Spending Time With Family And Friends

Vacations provide a good opportunity, to spend quality time with the family. If the children are not living with their grandparents, they should go to visit and meet them. It makes the grandparents so happy, and the kids learn a lot in their affectionate company.

This also leads to healthy communication within the family. Picnics and parties at a suitable location, with lot of open space, can be organised and the children would really enjoy and remember it for their lifetime.

  • Traveling and learning

Children love to explore and Travel. Traveling to a new place, within your own country or abroad, gives them a chance to get familiar with the new cultures, learn different languages and explore new locations. Prior planning is required, if you want to travel comfortably.

This is a great way to spend your vacation, and very educative for the children.

In fact, traveling is a great teacher---Let the children look through the geographical maps, and directions themselves. And, if they learn a new language in the process, how wonderful is that!

Recap And Replan

It is very important to keep the children intellectually active, during the vacations and holidays too.

This is the time, when they can work, to make up in their weak areas. For example, if they have some problem in Mathematics or Grammar, those areas can be paid special attention to.

A recap, of what was learnt, and a planning of what has to be learnt really helps. If the children have some idea of the upcoming syllabus or some understanding beforehand, comprehension in the new class becomes easier.

Therefore, parents should see to it, that at least an hour or two, is devoted to the studies as well, during the holidays and vacations.

Practice makes a man perfect, and performance is adversely affected if there is no regular practice.

I believe, the above quote explains it all. Make your children strengthen their weak areas, such as mathematics, numericals, formulas or grammar during holidays.

  • Summer Camps

There is a mushrooming of Summer Camps these days. Choose wisely, if you are sending your child, to one of them.

What I feel, is that the holidays are a great opportunity for both the parents and children, to spend quality time together. Lot of healthy communication and bonding can take place, if you do so.

Do you send your kids to Summer camps?

Make The Most of the Holidays or the School Vacation: Learn With Fun

You can think of various other ways, of how to engage your children constructively, during the holidays or vacation.

Technology is everywhere, in today's World and is almost a part of life.

While there are many benefits of technology, for learning purposes, but parents should see to it, that the children do not get addicted to it.

For sound physical and mental growth, outdoor activities are very important.

The purpose is, to Learn With Fun.

Rather than feeling discontented about previous year's performances, concentrate on the new beginnings, simply by Relaxing, Rejuvenating and Recharging your body and mind.

While Holidays and vacations are a necessary break, from the routine life, it is important to keep the children from losing, what they have learnt. So, plan your holiday, and make the most of your vacation.

Thanks Dianna, for your valuable comments!

I remember joining hobby classes, such as painting, Batik art, social service groups during my childhood days during two months long Summer Vacation.

Even my kids have learnt a lot during vacations. The choices of course have changed with changing times. They love electronics and adventure sports.

      Appreciate your insightful comments! Thanks!

Summer fun while learning important lessons is a great adventure! As a child, I enrolled in the summer reading program every year at the library. It seems to have ignited by love of writing. You have posted some really great suggestions for parents. Well done!

I found these great sandcasting kits at Beach and Nature Company ( that were a wonderful activity to do with my 4 grandkids. The kit comes with everything to make an 8" x 6" casting. the activity (including finding all of the treasures to put into it) took up a full afternoon and afterwards we had great keepsakes of the day.
